Tuesday mornings 6-10am - I was tired, cranky and in no mood to select yet another 6 or 7 obscure tracks from the back waters of our station's collection. A 40 minute track is just the thing to play in these situations. Gives you time to sit down, close your eyes and take a nap. About the best memory I had from that time was playing a wonderfully mixed tribute (of sorts) to Last Train To Trancentral - KLF. 8 versions, 40 minutes. My last show was in late December of '94 - the 19 year old (or so) station director came in to my show and asked "Would you please play less of that 'techno' crap and more Pearl Jam?" D. Today, it turned up. It's from I.D. Magazine (as in the International Design Magazine, not the pretentious Brit music/fashion zine), a short blurb in their "Expo" section: "At the end of a century of clashing ideologies, where better for the art of the Russian Revolution to end up than on MTV? An upcoming video by the ambient electronica band The Orb called "DJ Asylum" is an animated tribute to Constructivist posters, directed by Benjamin Stokes of H-Gun Labs in Chicago. The video bounces along through an industrial cityscape past smokestacks, cheering proletariat and uplifting sequences of the band members being fired from black cannons. On the brick walls are dynamic posters of spinning geometric shapes in the mode of Rodchenko, El Lissitzky and friends. 'There was so much interesting artwork coming out of Russia at that time,' says Stokes, who recruited artists and SGI/Alias experts to work on the piece, "and to my knowledge, there haven't been many attempts to animate it." Could the final legacy of the glorious revolution be the Bolshevik pop video?" It's accompanied by a still of the groovy Constructivist animation of the DJ & turntables (one of my personal favorite images from the video). I *still* say it's miles and miles better than the Toxygene video. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kevin Searle Subject: Re: (orb) YMO mixes. To mark their comeback, the pair are to play a 23-minute gig at London Barbican on September 2, during which, they claim, "The next 840 days of our lives will be discussed". 2K will cease to exist at the end of the concert. A recording of the show will be released as a single on September 22. The show will be filmed and released on video at a later date. Tickets are on sale now, priced =A310. The 2K concept is linked to the end of the millennium - 2K means 2000 and, at the time of the gig, there will be 840 days left until the turn of the century - give or take a week or two. The latest publicity shots of Cauty and Drummond picture them as Old Father Time figures. A band spokesman said the idea came about after the duo produced a version of 'What Time Is Love?' for 'Acid Brass', a recent compilation of rave hits played by a brass band. The spokesman continued: "I don't know whether it was in their heads when they went in to do it, but it's come out as completely their own track. It's really different and will definitely make an impact." He added that the show would be a performance of the track as opposed to an 'art happening'. He said the pair would "not just be standing around talking about the next 840 days of their lives". As to the message behind 2K, he said simply: "You'll just have to speculate on that. It doesn't signal the return of The KLF or anything like that. But it is pop music." Cauty and Drummond have worked together since January 1987. They scored a Number One hit as The Timelords with 'Doctorin' The Tardis' and as The KLF achieved massive hits with 'Justified And Ancient', '3amEternal' and 'Last Train To Transcentral'. They last performed live at the1992 Brit Awards with Extreme Noise Terror. At the end of the performance Drummond appeared onstage with a machine gun before announcing, "The KLF have now left the music business". The pair went on to form The K Foundation, which famously created the =A340,000 K Foundation Award for the worst piece of art in 1993. It was given toRachel Whiteread who had just won the =A320,000 Turner Prize. The following year they burnt =A31million of their own money on the Scottish isle of Jura. They never gave any reason as to why. In the summer of 1995 they recorded the track 'The Magnificent' for the 'Help' charity album. +++++++ L8r -Charlie Still listening to... _________________________________________________ The Cure The Orb Dinosaur Jr. Mark Eitzel NIN _________________________________________________ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Karsten Hammer Hansen Subject: Re: (orb) blue room full version on radio? Date: 04 Sep 1997 22:23:10 -0500 Got back from the D.C. Big Top fest around 6 a.m. this morning and crashed. There had been so many variations on the night's lineup that I wasn't surprised to find that a few artists I really wanted to see weren't there (Joey Beltram didn't make his DJ appearance, ditto for Juan Atkins, and Eat Static didn't perform, though Merv Pepler did DJ a set of drum'n'bass). System 7 came on early (9:30 p.m.), after a very nice DJ set from Michael Dog (I should've asked him what he played -- if all Planet Dog material is as good as the stuff he was playing, then I've got to pick up lots more of it). I'd talked a bit to Hillage earlier that evening and he seemed in a very good mood, and this carried into the beginning of their set. Swarming synth washes built up around Steve's gliss guitar as System 7 brought the stage to life under the strobe beams. Their opening build-up was marred by some technical problems with what I think were a pair of DJ'ing CD decks playing drum'n'bass loops. Several rather obnoxious skips in the beats threw Hillage and Giraudy off for a minute or so as they worked to get the gear under control. After fading out the beats and playing around with some delayed synth sequences, they moved once again into jungle territory, this time without a hitch. Flamming snares and hihats echoed left and right in some wickedly panned beats for what I presume was a track from their new full-length, _Golden Section_ (I haven't gotten hold of this one yet). Cool stuff, with minimal guitar work probing here and there amongst the rhythms. A second track, presumably also from the new LP, started out a bit like the "Osmosis Suite" from _Power of Seven_, with some odd polyrhythms and gliss guitar (Steve was playing a Steinberger, btw), and grew into a slightly slow-ish trance number. Hillage and Giraudy worked this piece up and down a few times before gradually building speed for the transition to a very long version of "Alpha Wave" (a take on the Richie Hawtin acid house mix) that went down a storm on the dancefloor. Steve was doing some "Arsenio Hall fist-in-the-air" motions as if to help things along, but the crowd hardly needed it. Great set, and I was glad it went over as well as it did with the D.C. crowd, most of whom I suspect were unfamiliar with System 7. Other highlights of the evening were Derrick May's nearly two-hour set of minimal Detroit tracks (this guy is truly a great DJ), BT live (though his music is pretty "by-the-numbers" and sounded all the same), and, believe it or not, Moby. I never have liked Moby's music, but the guy knows how to move the dancefloor with energy to spare. I was impressed. Unfortunately, 808 State were a bit of a disappointment at 3 a.m., the last set of the night. Their sound was muddy, and the updated break-beat versions of "Pacific State" and "Cubik" couldn't touch the original electro versions from 1989 and 1990. Oh for the good olde days.... All-in-all a very good night, though nine hours of straight techno mayhem were a bit much even for me. ;-) At least my hearing's still intact...I'll need it for Aphex Twin at the 9:30 club tomorrow night.... Date: 11 Sep 1997 08:59:29 -0700 First of all, Earth (Gaia) is (IMHO) a wonderful track. I THINK the samples at the beginning come from the movie "Flash Gordon" (correct me if I'm wrong--I saw the movie something like 15 times as a kid (I'm not kidding!), but it's been an equal number of years since I've seen it!). Anyway, the Orb songs I truly despise (in no particular order): 1. A Huge Ever... (sorry, I had to jump on the bandwagon) ;) 2. Slug Dub 3. The first track on Pomme Fritz (can't think of the title off hand) 4. Towers of Dub (I'm gonna get massacred for THAT one!) 5. Sticky End (I mean, what's the point?) My favorites (to redeem myself, hopefully): 1. U.F.Orb (can't listen to THAT one too many times!) 2. Little Fluffy Clouds (again, to my wife's chagrin) 3. Perpetual Dawn (hey, I actually like ALL the remixes...EXCEPT the version on the ABTU which I have--with the slowed-down "Heh-heh-heh- heh" irritatingly interrupting the groove every few seconds! Then=20 again, I don't do drugs, which may very well explain why I don't care for it. Go figure.... --Vincent I don't consider the Orb as a dance band. Those tracks, as much as they = are great examples of electronic dance music's possibilities, are the = exceptions. (Remember the guys said that Toxygene was an experiment, a = fluke?) To me, the Orb is mostly the ambient soundscapes, what we here = like to call Orbience (although, of course the Orb really is both). = Orb's music never seems concerned with making you dance. However, I = couldn't stop dancing at the Orb's show, even to grooves that most = people couldn't seem to get their 1-2-1-2-beat heads around. There's something that's keeping Orblivion from me considering it one of = the best Orb albums and that it's too densely mixed. It's quite murky = sounding to me. Not enough seperation in the sounds. I think I = prefer the Live Vegas mix of Tox over the album's for this reason, it's = simpler. I too don't like other people's remixes of the Orb, especially those who = reduce an eclectic Orb track to a simplified, groovy Trance track. I = love Bandulu and I love Trance, but the Orb's much more elaborate than = what Bandulu or Blood Sugar's done to them. Do you think the Orb were = consciously commissioning versions to get them played on dancefloors? And again on an unrelated topic, where's the new EP (with Terminal-?)? = Where are the singles for Delta MKII or Molton Love (they had more = potential than Asylum, IMO)? A chef with too many ingredients in each theme, forced to squeeze so much into the possibility of each theme. Still I wouldn't ask them to simplify in fears that they would take out some of the funny or more complicated statements of sound or technique. Maybe this was the intent. Some time back, I played this track for an arabic friend of mine. Who, within seconds of hearing it, asked me to turn it off. He was offended by it, saying it was a prayer of some sort, and that it was disrespectful. So who knows right?! Any arabic speaking Orbules with a take on it? On the other hand, I remember when all kinds of house tracks were popping up with samples of Dr. King, does his perception of freedom and liberation also apply and aid the cause of house-heads dancing to weeee hours... Since it's fairly new, why hasn't anyone made a big deal about it? Just like all Orb songs and remixes, it seems to be too cool of a song to forget about. ;) Since I am new to the list, I'll go ahead and introduce my humble self. I'm 20, and I have been an Orb fan for a couple years -- ever since a friend let me listen to what he called "that creepy slug song" on Terrarvm. (For a few days, he was telling me about his slug-nightmares..) Since then, I have bought every Orb-related thing I could get my hands on! (I still can't find the 40 minute Blue Room single..) Other than Orb, I listen to a variety of stuff from Underworld and Crystal Method, to Vangelis and Enya, to even Nine Inch Nails and Tool. side-note: I don't think Vangelis would let him, but I think Alex could do something amazing with the Blade Runner theme song... +------------------------------------------------------------+ + Jason Wallace wallajl@okstate.edu + + http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/9703/ + # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: derrien@mail.club-internet.fr (Jean Christophe Derrien) Subject: (orb) re: remixes and things... Killing Joke, formed in 1979, signed to EG Music, home of Brian Eno where Dr Alex worked in A & R managment. He was also such a fan of Killing Joke's he worked as their roady. Getting fed up with his A&R role, advising bands how they should do things, he decided to form the Orb and show them and us just how it can be done. As one of the Orb's big influences any Killing Joke recording is worth listening to, and one with a remix by Le Petite Orb is definitely worth picking up. They also record as Black Sun on the Dragonfly label. As to what they sound like, F**KING GREAT! Hope this encourages you to rush out and buy it. My roommate bought the soundtrack for Blade Runner and I found it to be excellent, with a dash of orbience thrown in here and there. But (pardon my blaspheme) I'm not sure LX could improve on it any. Are any of you familiar with the duo B12? They are one of my favorites, but I can't seem to find out anything about them - tried E-mailing their web site but have gotten no response whatsoever...I'd like to find out if they are touring or recording, anything. Maybe some of our UK list members may know something as that's where they're from...if you do know anything about them, please E-mail me privately. I know theres a few out there from Ultraworld/Patterns and Textures (dont know if they're the same), Pomme Fritz, etc. Anyway, it would be great if everyone on the list could own a copy of these, if someone was willing to make a compilation video. Just a Thought. Also, I've been making a few posts to the list recently but I never introduced myself. Hi. I've been into the Orb for quite some time but never picked up any of there material til just recently. I also caught both NYC shows on the tour this year and one a ferw years back.
