Orb's live shows tend to be a little more "beat-oriented" and silly at times. The mix of Little Fluffy Clouds on the Live '93 album, for example, has a 2.5 minute sample of a healer "healing" someone with a morphine drip. Also, Live '93 isn't really continuously mixed. Thank you Johan. Second, a little while back someone posted of the feud between J. Cauty and LX surrounding the recording of 'Space'. This supposedly resulted in Cauty removing all of LX's samples from the album. I guess my point is after listening to the album I found it to be more 'orbient' than not. I am noting several orb-like samples and the almost verbatim intro of 'Happiest Girl' from Auntie Aubrey, the beginning of 'uranus' I think? I am aware of the similiarities (and relationship) between the two bands/artists, but still found the likeness uncanny. Can anyone verify or refute this story? Here is the info as taken direct from the KLF FAQ. Cauty was also a founder member of 'The Orb' which he left, taking some tracks with him which were released under the name 'Space'. Space album, which was recorded originally as an Orb album by Jimmy and Alex, then they split up and Jimmy kept the master tapes (since they were recording in his house at Trancentral), reworked it, removed Alex's contributions and added some others of his own, finally releasing it on KLF Communications. I think that LX's version probably would have been more like Ultraworld with tons of vocal samples and heavy drum beats. According to an interview that I read/heard somewhere LX still possesses the original version. Don "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." D. This should be a great night, for as well as getting a chance to see my band Hex Projekta (I'm sure all Orbheads would like our sound), Alex will be DJing. We also have persuaded Zion Train to leave their retreat in Wales and dish us up some large helpings of digidub. We've also got a couple of Dodgy people (Matthew and Nigel) taking over the room upstairs and doing their thing on the decks. It starts a 9 and goes on through to 4 in the morning and tickets are 8 pounds. All money raised goes to help send Tom, a six year old Autistic boy, to the Options clinic the US. His parents have to raise 17,000 ukpounds to cover the course, accommodation, flights etc etc. I've known Tom all his life, and he's a great kid, full of energy and life. He and his family deserve this chance. So, if you're in the area, come on down and enjoy some good music and help Tom get to the Options clinic. I know what it is, but in order to tell others about it, it's very hard for me to describe, which leads my friends to believe the adage "if it can't be defined, it does not exist." Every definition I've found have always vaguely mentioned the echoey reverb effects and thick basslines. What can I tell my friends that will allow them to distinguish reggae dub from plain old reggae. BTW, for those of you who know little about dub (likethe guy who remarked about hearing about it "way back" in the 80's - no offense :) ) Dub is, like was mentioned, a style of messing with reggae records, where tape loops and other such effects were used to get particular sounds. Often times the dub versions were more popular than the originals in Jamaica, or wherever it is that reggae originated. Oh, and this came about in the '60's/70's, I do believe. 2) It is well known that the Orb, or at least LX has a bit of an infatuation with classic Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd are supposed to have made "synchronous" recordings, like the well-publicised Dark Side of Oz, and several others. (there's a good site at: http://www.xnet.com/~arkiver/synchro.shtml which has some examples) I'm sure you all know where I'm going with this by now... Does anyone know of any synchronicity within any of the orb's albums? I personally listen to the orb while watching the video footage of orbit on the NASA channel, but I don't think that counts. Maybe Smiley would know if there are any supposed or actual synchronicity with anything by the orb. Perhaps if you line up a sample with the movie it comes from, somewhere? I dunno, but this synchronicity thing seems like something that LX would get a kick from doing. Here's a definition from the liner notes of the Scientist album, "King of Dub", which is as good as any I've seen. "To those unfamiliar with this particular version of Jamaican music - namely Dub - it plays an important role in the progression of Reggae music, if not most forms of black music, to the wide status it enjoys today. If one looks at the flip-side of most Jamaican 45's there is either a "Version" or "Dub". This is simply an instrumental remix of the A-side arranged by the sound engineer and created wholly in the recording studio. It is often described as an x-ray - an insight into the innards of the musical arrangement. Each instrument on the original backing tape is re-shuffled and mixed up, replacing the focus of the piece with the Drums and Bass rather than the Vocals. "Invented" by Osbourne Ruddock, alias King Tubby the chief pioneer of Dub music today, the version became as important to the fans as the A-side, often making the reggae rhythm better than the song it was originally written for. Many studio engineers started to produce dubs and it was as King Tubbys young protege that SCIENTIST (Overton Brown) came to prominence, justly earning himself the King of Dub title." As I recall Selector Tamlin explaining on his show Positive Vibrations (KCMU radio in Seattle), engineers would also record special versions of dubs, in very limited pressings, called dub plates. Selectors (Jamaican for DJ) would get their sound systems together in a friendly competition, or clash, for the massive (or audience). Having the best dub plates played a large part in which Selector had the best sound system. Since then it has mutated and evolved as the tools for creating music have changed. Remember, at that time sequencers and samplers did not exist. This was all done with analog gear, 4 track recorders, and minimal electronics. Additionally, "remixes" of songs didn't exist either. In fact, I'd say that dub was the original remix. So what's the point of dub? Try listening to some Jamaican dub, than you might understand. Mad Professor, Scientist, King Tubby, and Lee Perry come to mind. If you want to hear great dub and non-dub versions of reggae music, check out Horace Andy's albums "In The Light" and "In The Light Dub" both available on one CD. Who was it that said when asked what Jazz was (paraphrasing here), "If you gotta ask, you just don't know". Date: 12 May 1998 09:30:15 GMT mornin' all! dropped into the studios last night, so here's the news i got (and am allowed to tell...) first, the bad news: - the album has been put back until march next year... - it looks like island are insisting on some sort of 'greatest hits' package to come out before then... - which also means that it looks like auntie aubrey II has been knocked on the head... - the first sunday each month at the 333 club in london has stopped, because the venue ripped the band off after the second night... - the 'mystery' guest whose identity i managed to guess, who MIGHT have been on the new album, has now decided to work with Massive Attack as they are 'higher profile' - tosser... - there's a very badly written article on the band in this friday's Independent newspaper in the UK. the text for the article was faxed through to the studios while i was there, and it sucks. really badly written, and riddled with mistakes. they should've let me write it... ;-) but, the good news: - i dropped off the copies of 'spherical' for andy & lx. i have a feeling that someone else in the studio nabbed one for a listen when we went off for a bit to eat, but i made sure that at least one of them was left on their mixing desk, so it couldn't be missed... - they've done three or four tracks with John 'Witchman' Roome for the new album... - they may be working with DJ Lewis's cousin on some new tracks. the band listened to some of his tapes on the last us tour, and were impressed... - a new track with vocals by a young lady called 'nina' has been recorded (i think - i haven't actually HEARD anything yet...) - don't forget that 'le petit orb' are taking over the Band on The Wall in Manchester this friday, with dj sets and a live appearance by 'lpo'... - i think i might have turned up the return of THRASH. this is coming out soon... The Black Dog with Ofra Haza: "Babylon" released by Warner division called WARNER.ESP with remixes by Peter Lazonby, Ant Hill Mob, Future Loop Foundation, Scanner and The Pastie Corporation, amongst others. now, as Thrash used to be known as 'The Pastie', i THINK this might be him - i don't know for sure, but...? anyways, that's it for now. l8rs. -- Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Smiley@cracl.demon.co.uk (Smiley) Subject: (orb) Re: Depeche Mode Orb mix Date: 12 May 1998 10:47:08 GMT jon writes: > I don't know if there are any DM collectors out there, but can anyone tell > me if they have the UK promo 12" for World in My Eyes (P12Bong20), someone > says that the Pulsating Orbital vocal mix on there is actually instrumental > and different to the UK Pulsating Orbital vocal mix (also appearing on the > Auntie Aubrey cd set) the uk 12" and us cd have the 'pulsating orbital mix'. the uk cd has the 'pulsating orbital VOCAL mix'. as i remember, the mix on auntie aubrey is NOT the one listed. it's the VOCAL mix, not the instrumental. l8rs. -- Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steve Wright Subject: Re: (orb) latest orb news... I do have the *Lily Was Here* import single with the original mix, the *Space Centre Medical Unit Hum* mix (Orb, course) and a cut called "Lily Robs the Bank". I have inferred from previous postings there are two Orb mixes of this song on the same single. Is this true? As to it's being a rarity, I know I would not have received it had I not been working in radio at the time. No mention of it being a promo, however, the catalog number is ZD43046. I found the best thing to do with *Pomme* and, to a lesser extent *Orbvs* is to forget everthing you know about Orb and lose yourself in the modulations. My experience was on serveral valium and serveral bong hits. I *think* I made dinner for the posse that night. I do remember a fun time was had by all. Pomme Fritz was featured prominently that couple of days. The *elctroshock therapy* bit struck home in a major way. But truth be told I liked both *Pomme* and *Orbvs* right away. That smashing rhythm bit in Montagne D' Or made me think of Led Zepplin's *Bonzo's Montreaux* on *E*. Alex and co. showing their roots on that gem. Now get back in laugh and introduce yourself to track two... "Plateav". Yes, a layer of bliss on top of an atmosphere of agreement... Next is the thriller "Oxbow Lakes" is it Mozart? Oh oh I believe this is music to discover stars with. Gotta give it a look. If you haven't enjoyed it try the chemicals and find your lost dog or something?!? Take your summer trip on "Montagne D'or (Der Gvt Berg)" it is only the proper thing to do this time of year. Duh? or taste some of El Nino's fungus O.K. If I haven't convinced you that this album is the most technical gift the Orb has given to our ears then try playing "White River Jvnction" with headphones on while on acid riding through The Pirates of The Caribbean!!! What a ride that one was! He He He. Track # 6 is really an extension of the orbs little album I think. The enjoyment of "Occidental" is no accident. Weird. Though I've seen the version w/o the 40 minute mix one more than one occasion. Perhaps there was a mistake on the back of it. Maybe I'll buy it anyway when I go back to the shop. I'm sure it was on Logic Records, as was the German "Assassin" CD. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Steve Wright" Subject: (orb) A trade, anyone? Skip if you don't care. I'm Andrew Janke, a college student (CS/Math major) at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, USA. I've been listening to Orb for several years, along with many other ambient and techno/dance/electronic groups. I have been a DJ for a gothic/industrial club, although I no longer have time for it. This list first came to my notice a couple weeks ago while I was doing a search for a CD I needed. I'm desperately trying to pick up a copy of CD#1 of the 2cd European Toxygene single (and willing to pay well for it if someone on this list has one they want to get rid of). At any rate, since I'm a great fan of the Orb, I decided to join on to the list. Orb-related: I have seen bootlegged copies of the Orb Patterns and Textures video floating around here. Does anyone know where the little snippet from the beginning came from? The one that starts "oh, what a beauty......". It sounds as if it's from an old commercial or something. Just curious. (this is the type of stuff you would hear djs play between orb sets). gritty, grainy, yet still somewhat dancefloor friendly (this depends on the artist and sublabel). the labels to look for include basic channel, chain reaction, main street, din, rhythm and sound, and maurizio. you will not be dissapointed. cl # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Keith Reinert Subject: (orb) orb reference Date: 28 May 1998 08:52:44 -0400 Hotwired's recent article/course on photoshop had this to say about filte= rs: "So the moral of the story is that you don't need to use all the filters all the time, unless your boss is dj Albatross or Moby or some Orb or other. If not, I don't think the Orb would stand a chance. As much as I love the Orb, I can think of at least 100 other groups/artists whose "track record" is far better than the Orb's...plus, they've withstood the "test of time," so-to-speak.... On the other hand, if it IS an ambient/trance/techno poll, then it is my humble opinion that UFOrb should be number 2...right behind (this should piss everyone off) Lifeforms by Future Sound of London. Actually, I'm half-tempted to put Aubrey Mixes up there with UFOrb. I would also put Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygene and Equinoxe up there, as well as Tangerine Dream's Rubycon, Tangram, and Force Majeure....
