There are very short Simpsons clips at the end of both Morphology and Anthology 2 (I think). Both are from the episode where Bart is being bullied by Nelson and enlists the help of the guy at the war memorabilia shop to attack him with water balloons. In one, Bart asks if it is OK if the balloons say 'Happy Birthday" and the war store guy says he'd prefer they say "Death from Above," but they'll have to do. The other is from the end of the show, where Bart addresses the audience to say that the show does not mean to glorify war, and that all wars are wrong, with the exception of the American Revolution, WWII and the Star Wars trilogy. 3. >To what other groups/people do you listen, outside the Orb? Just so I don't start a new thread of questions due to my mistake: Aubrey Mix CDs that say "Mayking" (not "Mayfair") in the matrix were from a 1994 repressing. Typically, mp3 files are really small (mpeg audio compression ratio is really good), and I'd bet that you could put at least 9-10 hours of audio on a single CD-ROM. All you'd need is some kind of .mp3 "jukebox" program to play the files through your sound card. Considering that I have the Aubrey Mixes and some other cool stuff like that, I thought it would be pretty dang cool to have a Orb CD like this to pop in while using the 'puter. This isn't really uncommon (at least i don't think it is) I have a few cds that are straight mp3 (alot of vinyl compressed) one possibility would be to do it with html... if the user had winamp or something like that, they could click on a link, launch a playlist or simply a track... if one was *really* ambitious, a jukebox interface could be made coded using mBed or something along those lines... of course, theres always the oaa... but then, can we upload to it yet? i've mp3ed *quite* a bit since last time i posted =) (of course, now we can all get fined $100000 a file... but anyways) brap@sonic.net /// looking for reason http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ blackdog, vvm, whitezone-l, slipdisc C.Gosselin, PO Box 8264, Santa Rosa, CA 95407 # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jan 1998 23:41:43 -0500 From: "Neil Kelly" Subject: RE: (orb) Re: Other Music Well, taking myself out of lurker mode for a moment... This is an innovative English label formed in the early 80s (I think they've just had their 15th anniversary?) by producer Adrian Sherwood. Although rooted heavily in dub/reggae (eg Dub Syndicate, New Age Steppers, Singers and Players, Lee Perry), their most famous act is probably industrial funk group Tackhead, who also record as Strange Parcels, Fats Comet, Little Axe (dub/blues fusion), Barmy Army (sets soccer fan chants to music), Keith LeBlanc (drummer) and as backup for Gary Clail, Andy Fairley and Mark Stewart. Unfortunately On-U have been marking time a bit lately and it's been a while since the last truly groundbreaking release. For an amazing aural assault, it's hard to go past Mark Stewart and Maffia's "Wrong Name, Wrong Number" on the CD of "Learning to Cope with Cowardice", put together in Burroughs' cut-up style from dozens of other On-U recordings with Burroughs samples and maniac rantings from Stewart. - - Bill Laswell's label Axiom - pretty well everything on this diverse label has musical depth and structure, and ranges from funk to dub, electronic, world, ambient and blues. There are several Orb collaborations/tracks on Axiom compilations eg 'Cocksville USA' on a neat little double CD called "Axiom Dub - Mysteries of Creation". The Orb has remixed Material's "Praying Mantra" off the most excellent CD "Hallucination Engine". DJs out there might like "Assassins Knowledge of the Remanipulated", an album of scratching credited to Altered Beats. - - Cabaret Voltaire, particularly their more moody works from the late 70s and up to about 1982 when they became more of an industrial funk group (and an excellent one too - although IMHO they have now lost the plot completely). - - A bit obvious, but Fripp & Eno's amazing seminal work from the early 70s '(no pussyfooting)', especially "The Heavenly Music Corporation" on side 1 (was this the first musical use of tape loops? It's about the same time as Steve Reich's "Come Out", but that and the subsequent "It's Gonna Rain" were non-instrumental pieces.) - - Barry Adamson's "Moss Side Story" (subtitled 'Soundtrack for a Film that Never Was') - - A hard to find little CD called 'Undark' by Russell Mills, which features contributions by Eno, the Edge and David Sylvian amongst others. Humm, that's enough to start with! Chemical Brothers (get that stuff away from me.. it sounds like 'techno for children') Enigma's 2nd album (b-o-r-i-n-g. . .) 99.95% of all Alternative music (it hast to be *really* good for me to like it, okay?) The New Metallica (see 'Alternative' above) Rap, Soul, G-Funk, etc.. I don't know if I like it or not: ================================= Meat Beat Manifesto (I can't get hooked on it for some reason) Aphex Twin (some of his stuff is nice, other stuff is just plain annoying) Prodigy (nice hard stuff, but it gets old and repetitive) 808 State (not bad, but it starts sounding childish after a bit) Spacetime Continuum (a little "too ambient") the Quake2 music (I expected some hard, heavy stuff.. but it sounds like a 15-year-old made it..) Enigma's 3rd album ("Beyond the Invisible" and "Shadows in Silence" are nice, but other than that, they are singing! And they stole the underlying bassline for "Why! ..." from Beck's "Loser"!! That bugs me to no end!! -- "I'm a loser, baby / so why don't you kill me" then the chanting starts.. WTF??) I apologize for making such a big list, but you asked! ;) +---------------------------------------------------+ + Jason Wallace wallajl@okstate.edu + + http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/9703/ + # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 09:09:42 -0700 From: rachel@ironlight.com (rachel) Subject: (orb) Other Music ok, have to chime in as no one has mentioned Spiritualized, and nary a word about System 7... both of which are most excellent. I don't even like to categorize the Orb. How about: Hank Williams, Biz Markie, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Jon Spencer, Mississippi John Hurt, Charles Mingus, Velvet Undergroud, Thelonious Monk, John Cage, James Brown, John Zorn, Lee Perry, Parliament/Funkadelic, Henryk Gorecki, Praxis, Dr. Octagon, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Bill Laswell, Invisible Scratch Pickles, Tom Waits. For some great dub and a source of some great Orb samples, get the Mikey Dread album "African Anthem - The Mikey Dread Show - Dubwise" on Big Cat Records. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 13:00:35 -0600 (CST) From: Steve Littleton Subject: (orb) Re: Other Music On Thu, 22 Jan 1998, holli wrote: > Everyone I know associates Orb music with me because I'm the only person > who listens to it... Me too. A comment I've heard more than once: "Damnit, is this more of your fucked up music?" Or: "Is this more of that Orb stuff?" My response: "Yes. Yes it is."
