I know what it is, but in order to tell others about it, it's very hard for me to describe, which leads my friends to believe the adage "if it can't be defined, it does not exist." Every definition I've found have always vaguely mentioned the echoey reverb effects and thick basslines. What can I tell my friends that will allow them to distinguish reggae dub from plain old reggae. BTW, for those of you who know little about dub (likethe guy who remarked about hearing about it "way back" in the 80's - no offense :) ) Dub is, like was mentioned, a style of messing with reggae records, where tape loops and other such effects were used to get particular sounds. Often times the dub versions were more popular than the originals in Jamaica, or wherever it is that reggae originated. Oh, and this came about in the '60's/70's, I do believe. 2) It is well known that the Orb, or at least LX has a bit of an infatuation with classic Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd are supposed to have made "synchronous" recordings, like the well-publicised Dark Side of Oz, and several others. (there's a good site at: http://www.xnet.com/~arkiver/synchro.shtml which has some examples) I'm sure you all know where I'm going with this by now... Does anyone know of any synchronicity within any of the orb's albums? I personally listen to the orb while watching the video footage of orbit on the NASA channel, but I don't think that counts. Maybe Smiley would know if there are any supposed or actual synchronicity with anything by the orb. Perhaps if you line up a sample with the movie it comes from, somewhere? I dunno, but this synchronicity thing seems like something that LX would get a kick from doing. Thanks, Emmett >what exactly is "dub" and what does it mean....not entirely sure..... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 14:25:47 +1000 (EST) From: Melinda Taylor Subject: (orb) Auction : Huge ever growing.... Here's a definition from the liner notes of the Scientist album, "King of Dub", which is as good as any I've seen. "To those unfamiliar with this particular version of Jamaican music - namely Dub - it plays an important role in the progression of Reggae music, if not most forms of black music, to the wide status it enjoys today. If one looks at the flip-side of most Jamaican 45's there is either a "Version" or "Dub". This is simply an instrumental remix of the A-side arranged by the sound engineer and created wholly in the recording studio. It is often described as an x-ray - an insight into the innards of the musical arrangement. Each instrument on the original backing tape is re-shuffled and mixed up, replacing the focus of the piece with the Drums and Bass rather than the Vocals. "Invented" by Osbourne Ruddock, alias King Tubby the chief pioneer of Dub music today, the version became as important to the fans as the A-side, often making the reggae rhythm better than the song it was originally written for. Many studio engineers started to produce dubs and it was as King Tubbys young protege that SCIENTIST (Overton Brown) came to prominence, justly earning himself the King of Dub title." As I recall Selector Tamlin explaining on his show Positive Vibrations (KCMU radio in Seattle), engineers would also record special versions of dubs, in very limited pressings, called dub plates. Selectors (Jamaican for DJ) would get their sound systems together in a friendly competition, or clash, for the massive (or audience). Having the best dub plates played a large part in which Selector had the best sound system. Since then it has mutated and evolved as the tools for creating music have changed. Remember, at that time sequencers and samplers did not exist. This was all done with analog gear, 4 track recorders, and minimal electronics. Additionally, "remixes" of songs didn't exist either. In fact, I'd say that dub was the original remix. So what's the point of dub? Try listening to some Jamaican dub, than you might understand. Mad Professor, Scientist, King Tubby, and Lee Perry come to mind. If you want to hear great dub and non-dub versions of reggae music, check out Horace Andy's albums "In The Light" and "In The Light Dub" both available on one CD. Who was it that said when asked what Jazz was (paraphrasing here), "If you gotta ask, you just don't know".
