(I sent this only to the list since I don't want to peg anyone out for "our" OAA activities!) I have an idea. I don't have anything for recording M3's, so I can't send anything to the "list's page". (To mask it a little, maybe we can call our new page just that.) Since the person that set up the our page has a lot of room left. I pose this question: Could we try to get some people on our list that we can all send any original Orb re-mixes to? (Orb only, since it's an Orb list) We talk about mixes that list members have done. We also talk about the Absorb the Orb remix contest that happened in 93'. I would like to hear how influenced Orb fans of the world "tear it up" on one of the most influential DJ bands ever!!!! I had this idea, of course, because I have a couple of things I would like to send. I just can't record M's. I know there are lots of people out there that don't have this capability either. I have one mix in particular I would have to clean up to send but I can get it to stereo VHS easily. It would be a good idea for these people capable of recording M's to tell what formats they can record it from. Since it takes a while to download the stuff, there also should be a 20 minutes or less rule, agree?? Thanks to the page server for putting it up! I believe audiograbber is heavily crippled as shareware. I've tried virtually every ripper and encoder on the shareware/freeware market, and I stick to "WINDAC32" for ripping CD's to .wav format, and "MP3 Compressor" for encoding .wav files to MP3. These aren't the slickest, but they give rock solid results. Everything I personally added to the OAA I made with these two app's on the same PC that's serving them -- a Compaq Presario laptop with 64MB RAM, AMD K6 300 CPU, 6.5GB Hard drive, and Win '98. Simple, straightforward, easy to install, easy to use, no frills. My kind of app's. Since there's interest in these tools, and it's in everyone's best interest for these to be available, I'm creating a directory in the OAA called "audio_tools" that will contain the shareware versions of both of these along with the Winamp player. Be sure you encode to "MP3" format and not MP3 WAV format, which is the default setting in "MP3 Compressor" MP3 WAV is a pretty cool format -- it allows mp3's to be played as .wav files on some players, but causes more confusion than it's worth. Use these settings when encoding: 44100Khz, stereo, quick, MP3 format. That will make sense when you see the preferences page, if your MP3's come out crappy, be sure to set the encoding to "idle" and turn off power saver modes and screen savers and don't use your PC for anything else, i.e. encode MP3's overnight. On slower PC's (slower than Pentium II) they really take a long time to make. I appreciate that someone has put up the OAA again. Organized as well (directories are cool). The only thing is that it keeps timing out on me, so I think there are too many people connected. The rate never really exceeds 1.5k/s which is kinda sucky. However, the effort is very much appreciated. On another note, I *FINALLY* got an original copy of the Aubrey Mixes. Seeing that cool cover in my hands, after looking for it for 3 years is quite a feeling. I have heard all the mixes before on mp3, but being a completist, this was the major deficiency in my collection (besides being able to get a clean 192kb/s rip ;) ). The only thing is, now that I have it, my life somehow feels empty. I have spent the last three years attempting to get this (for under $100 that is). I think I know how Charles Bronson felt in the "Death Wish" movies after he killed the main bad guy. I guess I need a new goal. Anyone have a copy of Eternity Project One CD or the Kiss 12" ? Anyone have problems with spaces in file names? I haven't listened through the reefer1 and reefer2 mp3's all the way, but I don't think they're clean so I'll probably replace them with new copies. If anyone downloads an MP3 that glitches during playback, let me know so I can see if it's the file, and re-encode it if necessary. If you have the resources, look at the folders in the incoming directory, and try to fill in any holes. Also, if you know of some remixes or bootlegs that should be on the OAA but you don't have them, make a directory in the /incoming folder so we know we need it. If for some reason it shouldn't be included, I'll just delete it, no big deal. I'll will be gone until Sunday night with Christmas activities, so let's hope it doesn't crash between now and then. I will also (tentatively) be changing the password every Sunday (of course I'll post it to the list) to keep the traffic exclusive to the list. It doesn't take long these days for details about sites like these to get around, and before you know it you've got 1,000 people hitting your site. I'm doing this for the list, and if word gets out past the list, I probably couldn't handle the traffic. stats: somewhere around 600 logins, and about 750 dowloads so far peace out.... - -Scott # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1998 20:23:35 -0500 (EST) From: "Benjamin L. I used to use windac32, until I installed windows nt. You need some retarded ASPI32 drivers to get WINDAC to work in NT, and the last time I used it it was buggy as balls. I recommend using CD-DA Extractor, as it supports simultanious ripping AND compression so you need no intermediary drive space for the .wav files (you need to have the Fraunhoffer codec for this). It also supports CDDB and ripping to one single file, which last I checked windac did not. It also seems to support more drives. On the other hand, you must register to rip more than one track at a time. This is, IMHO, worth it as CD-DA extractor is the best MP3 util I've used yet... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1998 21:29:35 -0500 From: "Andrew Cieszkowski" Subject: RE: encoding MP3's Was: Re: (orb) For Orb eyes only! :) list idea Happy to see an Orb AA up again.
