I happened to catch a few seconds of some wack new game show called "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", where Regis Philbin gives incredibly dumb people lots of money for answering everyday questions. Anyway, the contestant guy that was on there was asked something like, "If you were in a French Restaurant and ordered Pommes Frites, what would you get?" Of course, the guy went on to miraculously guess the correct answer (french fries) and won several thousand dollars. Hmmm... If only they'd asked him who Haile Selassie was. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 1956 23:04:23 +0000 From: Ed Blackshaw Subject: (orb) Has anybody noticed... (OT) Has anyone noticed how the number of posts complaining about a certain irrelevant thread has outnumbered the number or irrelevant posts in the first place? A good simile would be how a large number of people all shouting 'Shut up' at the same time does not generate quietness. Although I agree that the Cassini posts were both irrelevant and offensive, originally they were at least partly informative. My opinion (because that's only what it is) is that although this is an Orb discussion group, that shouldn't limit it to things only directly related to The Orb. This list brings together people with a common interest and they should be allowed to share their opinions on other matters. Obviously, it would be silly to be getting several hundred emails a day on completely irrelevant matters but I would credit most people with enough intelligence to stop. Anyway, the general gist of my ramblings is this: Chill out! Think happy thoughts. If you want something to complain about, there are far more important things in the world than a little wasted bandwidth, and there's always a delete button on your keyboard. -~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~- | Ed Blackshaw, School of Chemistry | ( Organic Section ) ) University of Bristol ( ( Tel.
