Apart from that one, i'm not sure you could class their music as 'songs' but I suppose that's a diversion into semantics and largely irrelevant... I know of at least one best-of type album, which I picked up on cassette a few years back for about a fiver. If you've got money to spend, their box set is good - five CDs spanning ten years (I think it's 1976 to 1986, but I couldn't swear to it without going home and checking.) It gives a good taste of all the stuff they did over that time. They also did a lot of film soundtracks - I'm not sure whether they're all available as records though. I have 'Thief' which is a good album - I think it's a soundtrack album... I know they did the soundtrack to a film called 'The Keep' - Anybody remember this film? A kind of weird cross between a vampire-type horror film and a film about Nazis... Odd. I was watching it on the TV a few years back thinking 'that sounds a lot like Tangerine Dream - I wonder if it is?' and lo and behold! In the credits at the end it was them. Not that I'm saying their stuff all sounds the same, but it has a definite style to it... Anyway, I hope that's enough information and sorry to those who have no interest in this. Any > help from you knowledgeable orbsters would be appreciated! > > Tim ===>Hi Tim! Who or what are you talking about? Tangerine Dream? Hoo boy.... To start off, although Tangerine Dream were not the *first* to popularize the synthesizer (that distinction goes to Walter/Wendy Carlos), they were certainly heavily involved in its development throughout the 1970s. Pheadra (their fifth album) is generally considered their "breakthrough" album, although I would suggest starting with Rubycon, which was their 6th.... My favorite TD albums include: Rubycon, Riccochet, Tangram, Force Majeure, and Pergamnon (aka, Quichotte). These represent the "classic" Tangerine Dream sound. Also worth picking up is LeParc, which was recorded in the mid 1980s, as well as the Legend soundtrack, both of which represent the best of their post-Virgin Records efforts. Most of the stuff throughout the 1980s and 1990s is ok, but not up to par with the earlier stuff...in my humble opinion. But many people prefer the newer material.... I guess it just depends which album got you hooked in the first place. (For me, it was Tangram and Force Majeure....) The Virgin era (circa 1974 through 1983) music was very atmospheric, conveying emotions ranging from joy to downright creepiness. Anyway, what does this have to do with Orb? Very little, admittedly, except that if it weren't first for Tangerine Dream (and Pink Floyd, for that matter), Orb might never have existed! ;-) Incidentally, I understand (from the official Tangerine Dream website) that Edgar Froese (the only original member of TD still with the group) was pissed off that the Orb did a remix of Toward the Evening Star...not so much that they *did* a remix, but that it was released without his approval. I guess some people take their work too goddam seriously.... I, personally, would be flattered if the Orb (authorized or not) remixed one of *my* works.... ;-) But to sum up, Tangerine Dream (along with Wendy Carlos, Vangelis, Larry Fast/Synergy, Tomita, and Jean-Michel Jarre) were among the giants of the 1970s electronic music movement.... I'd recommend you start with their early, more heavily sequenced stuff like Phaedra, Rubycon, and Ricochet. It's very spacey, there are about two or three songs per disc (20 minute epics), and they kick ass. I've got an extensive collection of TD myself, with well over 130 TD CDs. So I'm pretty sure I'd be the one to ask ;) Incidentally, FSOL uses TD samples all the time. Well I'm back after a year hiatus from the list (and all lists) & with a new service provider. Lots of "orby" coincidences in the past week, so i thought i'd drop a line: - -Bought a new ORB drive for my iMac (w/ 2.2 Gigs how could I refuse?) - -Heard what sounded like a muzak version of LFC while shopping in a local dept. store. - -Heard the real thing in the Virgin Megastore - -Saw (and didn't buy) a one-sided white label 12" with a really awful remix of LFC - -Finally picked up that Ambient Senses comp w/ the ambient version of Towers of Dub. - -Saw a guy (with bright, shocking blue hair) walk into a local used book/record shop wearing an orb concert t-shirt I hadn't seen before (it was blue too) - -Received a copy of the latest orb/alex patterson remix in the mail & played it on my radio show (by coincidence, the only request I had during the show was for some Roedelius. I told the poor woman that I didn't have any ,only to look at my stack of mail & see that I infact received one. Saw the brief promotional quote on the cover by Alex, opened it & noticed the final track was a 24 minute orb "re-remix" - whatever that means.) Got tired of wading through non-orb related material in the archives. Anybody want to update me on what's happened over the past year? - -chris n. YEah, this comes from an old skit on Saturday night Live. It's a commercial for SPUD BEER. Quite funny. From the Time SNL was funny...
