He was a bit off every so often, but I liked what he was spinning enough that it was enjoyable. I found a comfy spot in the back corner of the booth were I could watch him spin and check out his records and run a mellow groove. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. About half hour into the spin I pulled out a sharpie and my second Peel Sessions cover and handed it off to his girlfriend in the booth. She looked at me kind of reluctantly and turned to hand it to alex, but I was still holding onto the pen and pointed at her. Her reaction was very amusing. She looked confused, laughed and wrote *stay sunny! -LouisXXX*. She handed it back and I told her I'd get his later (didn't want to disturb him). Things he span(?) that were interesting: Space, Global Communication, Soul Wars (that was hillarious!) Once More, a CDR presumably from the new album, and LFC 98. He also ran Plateau. I asked him after the set if it was an exclusive mix, he said *oh yeah!* and so I asked if I could have it. He looked at me as if I were crazy... I dunno. I'm surprised that some folks allowed it - didn't Ford recently, (maybe even for the Focus?) use a Pet Shop Boys song? I was pretty sure they were vocal about commercialism; didn't they have a problem with some banners at a venue (think I read that in one of their books.) I was also a little surprised the first time I heard Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" on one of those Gap commercials. Depends on the song and the artist. I actually enjoyed LFC for VW, and know that at least one or two of my coworkers got into the Orb from that ad. I also remember that Toyota used something a number of years back which, while it may not have actually been the song, had an uncanny resemblance to the Pet Shop Boys' cover of "Go West." That was a little more disturbing; even no when I play that song I think of the ad. I see a few listees have already made their remarks about the show, so I'll just add mine. LX spun for 90 minutes, less than I expected. I basicly was a wallflower over on the left side of the floor, but it's not easy to dance and record at the same time. Saw a few people hit up LX with autographs before his set and lots afterward. I was one of the latter, having him sign my show flyer "LX was ere 11-1999". Definately enjoyed the new Orb stuf mixed in the set. I grabbed about 40 or so extras after the show, so I have plenty of spares. Now for the meaty part: I recorded the set using a Sony TCD-D8 portable DAT recorder with Oade "Stealth" micro mics. Sound quality is very good, and I plan to burn this to cdrs when I get the chance. I don't have any MP3 equipment, so I won't be riping it for the ftp (somebody else can do that later). I'd love to trade copies of this for: Other LX dj sets, Orb live shows such as: Great American Music Hall 6/18/95 Kansas City MO 4/26/97 Blue Room disc 2, FFWD cd, Assassin disc 1, "Orb" bootleg cd, ABTUW Demos. (and i'd sure rather have people walking around humming the orb rather than some horrible bastardization of "don't worry, be happy" - at least they're not mutating the lyrics to be "little chubby diapers" or something awful like that) (but i'd sure be crushed if they sold their songs to a company they didn't believe in, though) and while advertsiting's evil and all, volkswagon sure had my number with the ufo/spiritualized/spinning car/orb adverts! (i damn near felt compelled to go out and buy one!) =) all this, from the fingers of the girl who makes her living creating web ads! ;) rachel # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Nov 1999 08:38:46 -0500 From: Eric Osborn Subject: Re: (orb) Car commercials Basscadet@webtv.net wrote: > > Hey, > > I was dismayed to catch the new Ford Focus commercial featuring Banco de > Gaia's "I love Baby Cheesey", and almost lost it.[SNIP]. > Maybe I am selfish......any thoughts?.......Anyone? Well we all feared techno would go commercial, we just didn't know that meant being the sound track to every commercial... I don't know about the rest of you, but living here in Toronto the TV has become 100% techno sounding. ie teletext channel with watered down dnb and trance. our sports highlight channel even does some pretty good acid. And yeh, 9/10 commercials sounds like the chemical brothers... oldsmobile alero, all the bmw adds, I remember a trident add that I swear was done by daft punk, and on and on... the only thing I thank is our mtv equilvilent still pretends that techno doesn't exist. I guess I should state that this muchmusic channel specifically (and almost only) targets 14year old girls. (Imagine top of the pops 24hrs a day, yak, puke...) (and their only host that you don't want to stab with a rusty spachula is a sock puppet) then again, if you had to find a real human to smile while playing backstreetboys 20 times a day you'd probably want a empty headed yes wo/man...) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Nov 1999 15:27:23 +0100 From: "Dr.Winston O'Boogie" Subject: (orb) Tattoos Hi All! I agree, but look at Underworld. They put all their creative resources together and started Tomato. If techno/electronica is going to be used in this way, and if i were an artist, I would be following thier lead and doing it myself. MTV in the states doesn't completely ignore electronic music, every freakin promo or teaser for one of their piss poor shows uses it as background, but as we all know trying to catch a decent video is futile......I don't even know what time Amp is on anymore, if at all. MTV Europe isn't like this, much more open and diverse. Exactly, I completely understand bands having to do what they have to to get by and to keep making great music to enrich all our lives, my big complaint is it just seems all so under handed (for lack of a better phrase). Let the product stand on its own! Pollyanna-ish I know but grrrr...it just makes me mad some times. Same with "Empty-V" they should play techno videos for Christ' sake, not just use it to pimp their shows. Haven't had cable in three years, and Haven't had a need to(and probably wont until for some reason the simpsons are only available on Cable(the only thing I think worthy of viewing now days on the TV)).. Anyways.. Coming here to New York for work and staing in Hotels and Such, I now had the Luxury of Viewing cable in the Wee hours. I've decided to take a look at MTV and See what is going on there these days.. And let me tell you.. It was a Scary Sight...! It seems like it's even ever more a Mainstream commerical than it ever was... I couldn't take it.. and all the video's looked the same with this overly saturated glossy look... What I saw was all this new "heavy metal" .. what MTV calls it.... "1999 the Return of Rock" ... It seemed like Headbangers ball updated! With more annoying commercials than ever.... All these "Rock bands" now are just heavy metal with rap.. and bad little techno hooks here and there.. i can't name any names, i pretty much wanted to forget I saw the whole thing... Now I know what I've been missing.. And I'm not feeling bad about it... Sorry now back to regular Orb Programming..
