He has had his show for what must be nudging thirty years, and has always been consistent in his approach. He will generally play things that will not get heard anywhere else and will cover more or less all 'genres' (excluding metal!) Each night he has one or two bands who record a special session of three or four songs. Certain sessions were repeated, the criteria seemed to be whether John Peel liked the session, and general listener request. About ten to fifteen years ago the sessions started getting released on vinyl, then CD. The first Orb session was notable since it was the most requested session in the history of the programme. And when you consider exactly how many sessions there must have been and who they were by (think of T-Rex, Captain Beefheart, Smiths, Bowie, blah blah blah) this is quite a feat. I also think that the Orb were responsible for the longest session tracks, which should hardly come as a suprise. Anyone who can listen to Peel's show should make every effort to do so. Have a pen and paper ready to write down those tracks that you will love and will otherwise never hear again. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 13:52:23 +0000 From: Binni Subject: Re: (orb) Peel Sessions? My reason for asking is that back in August 1992 I was away from home and happened to be listening to Radio One late at night. During my slumber, I awoke to a unknown Orb track and can only remember the DJ mentioning a part of the title along the lines of "England One, Denmark Nil Mix" Was I dreaming???? I have all the Peel session CD's and the track in question is not included on any....
