This takes many steps. Here is a list of equipment you will need to complete this project: Turntable (one) Computer with sufficient HD space. ~10M/min.(one) Soundcard with stereo inputs (one) Vinyl records (as many as desired) Pre-Amp* (one) <--this makes the turntable output able to be used by the computer Dual RCA to Stereo 1/8" mini cable other cables as needed... * instead of a pre-amp, you may find that a DJ mixing board, or a home stereo-Hi-Fi will work instead. After we have collected all of the materials, we are ready to begin. 01. Hook up your turntable to the pre-amp*. (don't forget the ground wire) 02. Hook the pre-amp* up to the computer using the dual-RCA to stereo mini cable. (again grounding to the computer case might be a good idea) 03. Plug all equipment into electrical outlets. 04. Place desired vinyl record onto turntable, aligning the spindle with the hole. 05. Place needle in groove. 06. Start turntable (steps 5&6 are reversible) 07. Check for audio on the computer. 07a. if everything works, continue, if no sound is heard, then recheck all wires. (on a MAC you will record as an aiff) (on a windows computer record as a wav) 08. Open a sound recorder/editor** 09. Stop and recue the record. 10. Check settings on sound recorder***. 11. Open a new file. 12. Start recording. 13. Start turntable. 14. At end of song, stop recording and turntable. 15. Save file. 16. If more songs need to be recorded, repeat steps 11-15. Now we must convert our audio files into MP3 format there are many good software programs to do this. find one. use it. check settings*** ** software Sound recorder (WIN) Cool Edit (WIN) (better) for mac, check tucows.com, or download.com *** settings for wav or aiff files use stereo 44.1 kHz 16 bit for mp3 use 128 or 160 (ot higher)kBit/sec stereo. hope this helps - -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 01:59:32 +1300 From: "Richard Mills" Subject: (orb) #@$!*&$%@!! I'm not happy. Yesterday i sat down to read the local (Wellington, NZ) paper. When I got to page 6 i saw an article titled "Out of Orb-it". 'Oooh' i thought, 'This must be about the Orb's upcoming Wellington gig', still finding it hard to believe our favourite music magicians were coming to my town, and i was going to be there. I eagerly started to read the first paragraph, dreaming of how great the concert was going to be... "The New Zealand Festival 2000 is seeking legal advice following the withdrawal of dance music duo the Orb from this year's event." I was too busy picking holes in the opening sentence to realise what i had just read. When i re-read it, the air temperature in the room seemed to rise dramatically and i got that sickly feeling in the pit of my stomach. The article continued: "Festival Deputy Executive Director Alex Reedijk says the local promoter contracted to bring the pioneering electronica act to Wellington didn't have the authority to commit the Orb. Reedijk says the festival is extremely unhappy, having accepted on good faith that the promoter had booked the act." Extremely unhappy? You could say that's how i was feeling. But i would use slightly stronger words. So now there'll be no Orb, no mind-blowing gig. Just a letter in the mail telling me i'll get a full refund on my ticket. I don't want a refund. I want the Orb. The >official conclusion was (if I recall correctly) people *were* seeing >thing, but they were not extraterrestrial in origin. Well, Project Blue Book never concluded anything on its own ... it was just a public relations filter for the Air Force. The Condon Committee took that data and issued the Condon Report, which concluded that there was nothing unusual about the objects--although at least 75% of the sightings remained officially labelled "unexplained"!--and that was the end of Blue Book. > then they changed it to 'Operation Majestic', it's been there >> since World War Two, when they were losing all these aeroplanes and they >> couldn't work it out." > >===>Yeah, but what's really interesting (and this is why I >do *not* believe in extraterrestrial explanations for UFOs) is >that the whole UFO controversy did not begin until circa >1947--which, if I'm not mistake, was the year that the US >Air Force became a separate entity from the US Army. >Experimental aircraft--that's the simple and logical >explanation. Agreed ... for the most part. There are two separate deals going on that get conflated into one thing called "UFO's": One is experimental technology, primarily disc-shaped aircraft with amazing capabilities, which indeed didn't become a major nuisance till the late 40's. However, there is also actual paranormal UFO-style phenomena, which have existed as long as anyone can remember ... Book of Ezekiel, faery activity, religious raptures, etc. Sighting of disc-shaped airborne vessels go back at least as far as ancient China, and there's the most recent Midwest Airship of 1897. Regardless, the so-called "Extraterrestrial Hypothesis" is indeed untenable. >> i find it strange that area 51 and the blue room both exist >> is there really that much spacejunk collecting on earth? > >===>Well, either they do or they don't. I think that there >probably ARE secret military installations scattered >throughout the US, particularly in the desert southwest >and other relatively unpopulated areas (hell, one can only >imagine what they've got in Alaska and Wyoming!). >However, the term "urban legend" comes to mind when >it comes to most UFO stories. Need I say that I'm a >skeptic? ;-) I disagree ... they do /and/ they don't. =) I have no doubt that there are strange looking aircraft in hangars at Area 51, but whether they have anything to do with extraterrestrials is another question entirely. By the way, I think that LX's idea that the aliens are "vegetating" is erroneous ... The story I heard is that most of the EBE's allegedly recovered expired very soon after their crash (though one named Krll was supposed to have survived for some time and even written a book). Point being that the occupants of any Blue Room were probably dead. I guess the point I'd like to make is: the fact that most public data on UFO's is disinformation doesn't imply that there isn't a very real phenomenon going on right under the noses of investigators and debunkers alike. Indeed, I, myself, believe in the presence of both experimental aircraft /and/ extraterrestrials, so it gets pretty confusing. =) I can't recommend Jacques Vallee's book /Dimensions/ trilogy highly enough, for disentangling all this high strangeness. - -=Seofon Ambient Temple of Imagination > http://www.a-toi.com > http://www.mp3.com/atoi double-disc anthology Y2KAOS now available! > http://www.a-toi.com/y2kaos # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 21:05:36 -0700 From: Lazlo Nibble Subject: (orb) ORBULLETIN: Premature De-Orbulation # This is an Orb announcement from the ORBULLETINS mailing list. By now most of you affected know that the Orb are not playing the New Zealand 2000 festival in early March, despite vigorous promotion to the contrary over the past couple of months. According to a local newspaper article quoted on the Orb list by Richard Mills: "Festival Deputy Executive Director Alex Reedijk says the local promoter contracted to bring the pioneering electronica act to Wellington didn't have the authority to commit the Orb. Reedijk says the festival is extremely unhappy, having accepted on good faith that the promoter had booked the act." This would certainly explain why our "usual sources" never confirmed that the band were going to play the show. Looks like everyone involved got screwed on the deal, from fans who bought concert and airplane tickets to the festival itself which sunk quite a bit into promotion of the show if that web site they put up was any indication...here's hoping the promoter in question gets his arse kicked but good. - -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 21:18:15 -0700 From: DJ Orbette Subject: (orb) Axiom Dub/ New Material? I mean, I've seen almost everyone I've wanted to (except Squarepusher), but it has taken over 6 years. The only repeat visits have been from Ninja Tunes folks and Luke Vibert. Last night I had to make the 6 hr. round trip to Seattle to see u-ziq and Luke Vibert and BJ Cole. Well worth the drive, but it would have been nicer to save the $100 (damn exchange rates- but that was way cheap compared to staying overnight) and get to bed at 5 am (3 hrs. driving is no fun when you're very sleepy). They were supposed to cross the border in their luxury mobiles or fly or whatever, but they canceled the show. We're nice up here, I swear! I know Toronto is cooler with EC and everything, but it's staring to really bug me. And it's not just electronic stuff, when I was in Seattle last night and flipping through one of the local magazines, the concert announcements were pretty crazy compared to here.
