Rachel, It seems that for most domestic releases, CDNow suits me just fine. However, for the rarer imports (we over here across the pond call them that ;-) ) I find a lot of help from the overseas dealers, preferrably: Virgin UK AB-CD German Music Express (musicexpress.com) Lakeshore Record Exchange (alternativemusic.com) I know, I know... They have a lot of hard to find stuff that I often have to go to the specialty record stores for, like Quaker Goes Deaf, Other Music, or Etherea... Which reminds me.... Sights Rough and not flashy at all... but the reviews are great! Their shippping isn't terribly fast, but thier prices aren't horrible. But can > anyone tell me the *advantage* to purchasing cds > online, as opposed to going to the local cd store? one word for you: http://www.fightdivx.com/coupons.htm coupons galore. For example, CDNow has *2* different "$10 off a $15 purchase" coupons valid right now. I dare you to find any local store that has that. > >From what I have found, the prices are *NOT* any > better--and, in those cases in which they are, they > still end up costing just as much (if not more) after > the shipping costs. with coupons and pre-order discounts, online prices are usually better than you can find in stores. For example, last november, I pre-ordered Tori Amos' "To Venus And Back", a Tori CD single, and NIN's "The Fragile" on the same day. Both CDs were %40 off, and I had a $15 off a $35 purchase coupon. Including shipping, I got all 3 for a hair over $20. Either one of the 2 CDs would be $17-$19 in my local store, not including Sales Tax. Is that convincing enough for you? > At least when I'm in my local cd store I can look at the > item I'm purchasing.... And let's just face it, when you're in front of a computer screen 70 hours a week, it's just convenient to order online. > Am I missing something? Are there any stores that offer > free shipping? But can >anyone tell me the *advantage* to purchasing cds >online, as opposed to going to the local cd store? For me, it's primarily about selection. The stores in Fort Worth, Texas don't have much in the way of smaller electronica labels and that kind of thing, and if you ask the clerk about them, you get a funny look. I even had a hard time finding Orbus Terrarum the day it was released. I had to visit four stores before I found one that had gotten it in stock, and they only had two copies. To find a decent selection, I usually drive an hour to Dallas, or if I feel like a road trip, I start the three hours to Austin. And even in the stores with a decent selection, 80 - 90% of the time they don't have a listening station where I can hear the music before I buy. Online stores usually have listening samples, and even if they are tinny realaudio samples, I can usually get a feel for what I'm ordering. After I order, they come straight to my house, I don't have to drive to go pick up my stuff. And if it comes to Warp, Skam, Rephlex or Musik Aus Strom, forget it. Mail order is my only possible avenue. On non-electronic oriented music, I can usually find what I'm looking for in the local stores, but there just doesn't seem to be a great source for electronic music around me, so I resort to online ordering. In my opinion, the online music sites I order from are much more informed than my local record shop clerks, and give better customer service. I respect and appreciate places that give me information and service, so they get my money. steve levering s.levering@tcu.edu www.tomandsteve.com KTCU 88.7 FM 9-noon Saturdays # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 09:39:42 -0600 From: John Moxness Subject: (orb) Steve Reich Here's a little something I found in the local paper here in Madison, Wisconsin: ___________________________ Present Music music by jewish composers steve reich and osvaldo golijov with cantors jerry berkowitz & deborah martin Different Trains Different Times saturday march 4 7:30pm beth isreal center tkts: $15/7.50 students 414.271.0711 ___________________________ I'm not positive if its the same Steve Reich we all know and love but I'm 99.9% sure it is since they used one of his old album names in the ad - 'Different Trains'. The only reason I'd order online is if I'm too busy to go out there and get it myself. Before my currently location, the nearest really good record stores were 1-2 hours away. Being in grad school, that meant I was never able to find enough time to make the trip. Online stores allowed me to get stuff. The flip side is that if you aren't ordering enough, you're going to lose out on shipping. Are there any stores that offer >free shipping? yalplay did that for a limited time when they opened up their site. some ppl got some amazing deals there, from what I heard on some lists :) Agust "Nemesis1" - aaj@centrum.is - ICQ: 1290264 - http://nemesis1.cjb.net w00p! :P # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 19:34:45 -0000 From: "mark lewis" Subject: (orb) honestly speaking behave yourself craig. i'll tell you what it is, history is what it is. now we all agree that these things have to be kept low key, so lets not point the finger. lets all just be careful. and when things do go 'tits up' we'll take it on the chin. we all apologise to the site owner and we all promise to be careful in the future. am i wrong? love mark craig wrote..... > I've been reading the group for some time now, and I must admit that > I've often wondered what fnord _actually_ is. > > Can anyone help me out? > Craig! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 12:40:18 -0700 From: "mark lewis" Subject: (orb) Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 19:37:41 -0000 craig that wasn't personal by the way. mark # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 22:59:36 -0700 From: "Dj Casey" Subject: Re: (orb) Question about online stores.... > > Ok, there are tons of online cd stores. Imports usually cost significantly more around here than they do from, say, 101cd.com -- especially for singles and midlines. They are usually still cheaper online after shipping costs in my experience. Other than that I wouldn't bother buying CDs online except that I keep earning all this credit money from cdnow that I have to use up. :-) - -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Everybody's doing weblogs and I conform! http://www.studio-nibble.com/weblog -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 23:38:54 +0100 From: "Robert Jan Bijleveld" Subject: RE: (orb) Orbology online Fixed!
