Hi, Just got a promo copy of the new Banco de Gaia CD and was surprised to find (like Cydonia) a vocal track. It reminds me a lot of Portishead, and although I definately don't see it as selling out, it certainly seems to be an attempt to make for more airplay, and further sales from the remix CD single/12 inch, no doubt. (remixed by The Orb and C-Pij) It's a "muddy" track. I suppose Andy collaborated in this. It's not really a track with a great melody, more an ambient/ dubby stuff with lots of variations around the same loop. Leading artists in the dub and trance scene have produced original tracks and special remixes to create a unique album to raise funds for Survival's campaigns. Tribal Futures celebrates the importance of tribal communities and their music in the 21st century. The artists have drawn inspiration from the music and dances of particular tribes, including the Kalahari 'Bushmen', African 'Pygmies', Australian Aborigines and Amazonian Indians, reflecting their empathy with indigenous communities. For over thirty years, Survival has campaigned for the rights of tribal peoples worldwide, from the reindeer-herding Khanty of Siberia to the honey-hunting Ogiek of Kenya, from the uncontacted Indians of Brazil to the forcibly-settled Innu Indians of Canada, with many successes. Current threats to tribal peoples include illegal logging, mining, colonisation and dams, and the violence, crippling suicide rates and disease that is introduced to tribal communities. If tribal peoples are to continue to survive, it is vital that they are seen as relevant to the present day, and not as relics destined to perish through 'progress'. The dance and trance scene has been heavily influenced by tribal music, and this is a great opportunity for the music industry to 'give something back' to indigenous communities. Tribal Futures is part of an ongoing project which aims to raise awareness of these threatened peoples and help fund Survival's vital work with them. This album is the first in a series of remixes, events and live recordings to be released under Survival's label, Yombo. For the Yaka Pygmies of Northern Congo, 'Yombo' means life. Survival and Yombo are ideally placed to give tribal peoples a voice, and to bring their music and culture to a wider audience. Notes to editors: The Tribal Futures CD will be available at all good record shops, on-line (www.survival-international.org), or by mail order for £13.99. All proceeds from the sale of this album will go directly towards funding Survival's work with indigenous communities. On 22nd September Survival will hold a press event at the Tabernacle in Ladbroke Grove, London. Also, in collaboration with Dragonfly Records, Survival will host a launch party at the end of October 2000. Artists featured on the album will DJ or perform live at these events. _________________________________________ Tribal Futures Track Listing froot loop - finely powdered rain 6:49 inspired by the himba nation, namibia written & produced by greg hunter, warrick sony, brendan jury & the himba nation himba audio & footage courtesy of doxa productions copyright control p2000 zion train - shaking tent 6:11 inspired by the innu, canada written by perch / cod / tench produced by zion train copyright control. zion train appear by permission of universal egg p2000 sounds from the ground - orang ulu 6:12 inspired by the penan & iban, malaysia written and produced by elliot jones & nick woolfson sherlock holmes music ltd / copyright control p2000 krishna & Rashid - bushmen (bushey volatile remix) 5:37 inspired by the 'bushmen', botswana written by 'bushmen' of the kalahari produced & mixed by krishna & rashid published by kalamazoo & administered by peer music krishna & rashid appear by permission of melt2000 p1997 suns of arqa - children of jumma (the orb mix) 6:35 inspired by the jummas, bangladesh vocals - jumma child, raghunath seth-bansuri and angel eye Violin - johar ali tabla - shahbaz hussain - tabla bass and drum - wadada & alex patterson written by suns of arqa produced by wadada & alex patterson, arqa sound uk mixed by the orb rocksteady (ego) music p 2000. the younger brother - evil and harm 5:47 inspired by the kogi indians, colombia written & produced by benjy vaughan and simon posford the younger brother appear by permission of twisted records copyright control p2000 yothu yindi - timeless land (leftfield mix) 9:12 inspired by the aborigines, australia written by m. yunupingu/w. marika/s. kellaway/d. bridie - sony music original recording & production by robert musso. additional production & mix by ian faith p1993 yothu yindi music p/l - under exclusive license to mushroom records (uk) ltd festival mushroom group p/l mastered from vinyl juno reactor - conga fury 5:08 inspired by the 'bushmen', botswana written by ben watkins and mabi thobejane african percussion mabi thobejane from the album 'bible of dreams' © mute song /melt2000 publishing ltd p1997 ensemble bash - mopti street (banco de gaia remix) 7:34 inspired by the mande people of west africa written by simon limbrick produced by jeff hilton & ensemble bash remixed by toby marks recording courtesy of soundcircus p 2000 dubtrees - waorani in dub symphony 8:29 inspired by the waorani, ecuador written by m. glover & greg hunter produced by youth copyright control p2000 graham massey & colin seddon - fort four fish (pro bumba orchestra) 5:58 inspired by the mbuti 'pygmies', democratic republic of congo written by graham massey & colin seddon engineered by phil kirby p1998 perfect songs/copyright control _________________________________________ cheers, - --- Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 08:23:46 -0600 From: "Long, Joshua L."
