Why would anyone want another ABTU when there's *three* versions plus innumerable remixes? I played everything I have from that album (don't get me wrong -- I love it, but once is enough) back to back once to see how long it would take -- it took two days (and the CD carousel never shut off). Pleasant. 2. Ignorable as it is listenable. 3. Listenable as it is ignorable. 4. Interesting if you listen to it. 5. Aural wallpaper if you're ignoring it. 6. Anything can be ambient if you play it at a low volume or you slap a lot of reverb on it. 7. Most ambient music doesn't develop in the classical sense. Some people might claim it "doesn't go anywhere" but that's okay because you can sit in awe of the sound. Some music makes the fractal move outward and some music (that which I'd call ambient) makes it move inward. Never thought much of the term. I thought it was Brian Eno's invention to get you to buy Discreet Music or Music For Airports when it came out, but Raymond Scott made pretty much the same thing as Brian Eno's stuff in the early 60's to soothe babies. So maybe Alex wants to soothe babies by the time he gets to his early 60's or he wants to get you to buy Brian Eno's albums when they come out in the early 60's. Or maybe he wants you to watch more Bugs Bunny. An album out 29 January with remixes by Moby, BT, FSOL, Dj Rap... Then the big part : Source : Muzik UK 69 LX Interview : The ambient doctor returns with more mellow grooves to cure your ills For the past 3 years, there's been a huge, ever-growing pulsating void at the centre of the dance music, caused by the apparent disappearence of wooly-hatted prankster LX Paterson and his seminal ambient-techno-dub outfit The Orb. Had Paterson been abducted by one his beloved UFOs ? Apparently not- he had, instead, fallen into a musical black hole generated by the messy implosion of his label, Island. By we can prepare to be Orbed once more : the globular ones are about to male a triumphant return with Cydonia, a blistering dub-drenched 14 track LP that's their best since UF Orb. There's also the irresistible single, Once More, a chunky yet winsome affait featuring the vocals of Aki, and an all-encompassing remix package featuring a fuzzed-up dub-hop affair from the warped fist of the KLF's Jimmy Cauty. Plus we can look forward to Paterson's new internet-based vinyl-only label Bad Orb and Orb live shows from April onwards. We caught up Paterson by phone in Washington DC, where, oddly, he was touring with techno-trance outfit Juno Reactor. Q : So what's been going on in Orb-land in the past three years ? A : With Island been sold, it got very, very messy. It's settled down now. But I haven't been just sitting back, saying "I've just completed an album and why isnt anyone listening to me" Q : We presume that means you had the chance to take your time over Cydonia ? A : Tell me about it. I think that's the beauty of Cydonia - it reminds me of Ultraworld, because that was the first album I'd ever done, and therefore 29 years of my life were rolled into it. For instance, I did a track - Thursday's keeper- with Witchman, and we had time to come back and do it again and it came out much better. As the Orb wasnt fuctioning, Andy Hughes and I sort of split. I've collaborated with Thomas Fehlmann on Cydonia - he's been a constant from day one with The Orb. The beauty of the album, again, is that there's not just one engineer making one sound for the whole album, just like Ultraworld. Q : And there are a lot more vocal tracks on the album, featuring Nina Walsh and Aki. A : Cydonia' was going to come out 2 years ago, with a couple of vocal tracks on it. I've been writing poetry for umpteen years now, and I sat down with Aki and Nina, and worked words out. The idea was for two vocal tracks, but the album took so long that I added another two. I think Centuries is a really good second single. I've got some slates of a remix me and Thomas did of it - one of what we're calling Eurofen remixes. They're very Pole-type techno. I've been playing that out and got some mad responses. That's it for now. I've got to go. Be back in 3 hours. Stay tuned for more interviews... It's going to be a web site label, and we'll release and delete stuff in the space of a month, so it becomes collectable. We'll only press the number of copies that are ordered. We used to do that in the early days of Killing Joke; with the first 10-inch, we were ironing plastic sleeves into the records. A : People will be getting an "Orbasaurus" with a limited edition of Cydonia. It explains little things, like the real meanings behind some of the track names. It goes a little something like this - ex roadie Alex Paterson records two groundbreaking albums that redefine the term "ambient" for the electronic age (Ultraworld and UFOrb), score one ubiquitous hit single (LFC), then swiftly inserts head up own arse, never to be seen again. Thankfully the truth - as usual in the Orb's wiggly world - is somewhat different. Although even the most ardent Orb fan will admit that there were a couple of albums in the mid-nineties that were near unlistenable, it should not be forgotten that this musical story does, thankfully, have a happy ending. It's one which 1997's cruelly ignored Orblivion only goes part of the way towards detailing. CYDONIA, while perhaps not as immediate as its predecessor, on repeat listens is clearly Paterson's (and collaborators like Thomas Fehlmann and Guy Pratt) most cohesive work to date. After opening with the pretty weak coupling of single Once More and the frivolous Promis, it's a slow but sure take off, and one that's only truly realised on the gargantuan A Mile lump of lard. In this era of short attention spans and albums that probably never get played any further than their second track, it takes a fair share of guts to make a comeback album with the strongest tracks all in the second half. But then, that's always been Paterson's contrary and irresistible charm. You're always waiting for that pay-off, and the biggest thrill is that it might never come at all. Indeed, the only bone of contention lies in the patchy quality of the much vaunted vocal numbers. As Paterson's spent the last decade sculpting some of the most profoundly complex and riveting soundscapes in music, it's a bit much to expect him to be able to write perfect pop songs, and it largely transpires that he can't. It's only on the suitably discordant and disconnected Plum Island that the combination really works. It's when you take stuff like the crackling, electric dub-pulsing of 1,1,1 where the Orb's free-floating bliss meets a mean but beatless dancefloor nous, that you realise that they still, somehow, manage to sound like no one else when they put their minds to it. Lie back and let yourself go - the Orb still rule from the centre of the universe. Berlin as they seem to be called nowadays) sticks to the sound of their contribution on it...really no comparison to what they did on the rather boring 'Via Nostra'... Btw, who is familiar with another compilation, called 'Clicks & Cuts'..? Is it worth the effort? First, magazines usually finish their issues a month or so prior to the actual month it is released. Anyone who gets a subscription of their favorite magazine in the post can confirm they get their issue about two weeks before it hits the news stand. Secondly, records labels know this, and as a result, they release promo's to the press in anticipation of a review at the time a record is released. Working in radio, I ususally get releases a couple weeks before they are released, so I know what we will play when it is actually available to the public. And, before you ask, noooo I don't have a copy. I tend to deal with mostly independent labels; although I am sure we are going to burn a hole in our copy of Cydonia once it is released. I am quite looking forward to the new vocal tracks. I don't feel it is a sellout or anything like that, as what I admire most about Orb is their willingness to not paint themselves in a corner. And I am sorry, but lyrics like "...the holy ghost is crying...jesus christ i am dying..." are hardly lyrics by which to sell out. For a grunge band, perhaps, but for a dance band, in whose culture an "everything is great cuz I am blissed out" attitude is par for the course, the lyrics for Holy Ghost are quite the slap in the face. Quite punk, if you ask me. But then again, LX has always been a punk at heart. And more dub on this release?!?! WOOOHOOOO... The more Orb delve into dub the more and more I love them. AB-CD.com is taking pre-orders for "Once More" Well that is it...unless....anyone want to hire a recently graduated web designer? I soooo don't want to end up behind the counter at Wendy's. HELP! Does anyone [Smiley?] know anything about "proper" releases? My personal opinion is that the LP, CD single and Brown 12" will only be commercially released. I think Amazon.co.uk or HMV has listed the Brown 12" and CD by catalogue number for release in Feb 2001 [we all know that might change] but at least it indicates that they have been given some information somewhere down the line. Does anyone know about the Vinyl release of the LP i.e. 2 x 12"'s? with longer remixes etc, prints etc etc My guess again is that because it's been so long since an official orb release is that Island will want to milk it for all it's worth.......and release on every format to appeal to the anoraks and collectors [me included in both] ;-) I also know of someone who actually owns a promo of the Once More video, but as yet I haven't managed to find out what it's like. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 07:18:32 -0700 From: "Dr.Winston O'Boogie" Subject: (orb) Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 15:18:25 +0100 Hi, sorry to break in but I=92ve lost all my contacts and I=92m looking f= or the owner of ftp.mocker.org please contact me in private I have an FTP up, an= d I need some advice.
