Anyhow, it's on a fold out leaflet that advertises both "Once More" (and which incorrectly states that the single will include mixes from Jimmy Cauty - only available on the promo issues) and "Cydonia". It doesn't come with the UK CD version of "Cydonia" (maybe the double LP?), but is available on-line at www.orbcydonia.com. It is, incidentally, a list of phrases with an explanation, similar to a thesaurus, hence the name. For instance: "MORE GRILLS LESS FISHCAKES: Twiddly wuddly parp niddle clang. Flib flib flib runcible arbeg whoop. Ickle bong go-go ratatatat. Ftang ftang wahh-hoo frimple frimple."! However, most are a lot more useful than that one, but I love the explanation (despite the fact it's meaningless)!! I have the option of both, but because of the way I assemble my shows I end up bringing in all my own stuff, even though some of it is also at the station. Less headaches that way, I've found. So: "my own record selection." > I could be pedantic and say that playing someone > else's mix CD is not really DJ'ing Agreed, which is why it's not something I do every week, but more like half a dozen times a year at most. > You're in a tiny percentage and people like > yourself are few and far between. I agree that such "freedom" is rare, even in college / commercial-free radio, but even this station isn't as "free" as one at which I used to work, where we played *anything* on the air, regardless of FCC regulations. My favorite illustrative story about this is that the first time I heard NWA's "Fuck the Police" was when the music director at the station spun it for me while he was broadcasting. There's always a tradeoff, though, and at that station you had to play exclusively from their library and couldn't bring in your own gear (it was more of an anti-theft thing than any kind of playlist control). I think there's been a meeting of the minds here, and I'm happy to let the subject drop. As I mentioned, though, I felt compelled to put in my two cents lest the person who posted the original question go away from the thread thinking that DJs who don't beatmix are shit. I think with anything in life it's all about moderation and being able to look past doing just one thing, but still strive to do what you do, the best that you can, and in my eyes this means being able to beatmatch and mix tracks together. Below is a mp3 of me and my friend science doing a 2x4 set together with a mixer each and 2 to 3 turntable each. There is some beatmatched stuff, and some stuff is not beatmatched, and then there is some stuff that is half way inbetween that, were the tracks are pretty much beatmatched, but the mix is very short and is allmost a fade in fade out. I am sure you all have heard plenty of people beatmatch downtempo; however, I wanted to prove a point in that you can do both and doing both can make things sound really good. The new ideas are riddled with complexities and the usual lust for something far out and unearthly. Like with the Orb's previous album 'Orblivion', 'Cydonia' sees the track lengths being kept to a minimum with only one track, 'Terminus', exceeding the ten-minute mark. Another difference with 'Cydonia', when compared to the Orb's previous work, is in the greater number of vocal layers that have been used. I just tried again, and it's back to the "Three days to go" screen now. I guess it just wasn't running right and they pulled it. Or it was overwhelmed by orbsters after I posted it and it crashed. strange. The one I got looked like an HTML e-mail. But since I'm un unix now, it just looks like a mess to me too. the only readable text I got out of it was "garphoo thanks you for joining badorb, com, you" with no end to the sentence. Bizarre. As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm in the US and could not get in from home (Mac) but can get in from work (PC). I don't *think* it's a Mac/PC thing (because someone else mentioned it being slow on his G4), but it's obviously not geography, either...
