Sorta OT I've been thinking a great deal that some of the characters for badorb remind me a great deal of characters from a comic book called Scud: The disposable assassin. they have the same mismatch of animal parts and things, to make really tripped out combinations. It's just that the badorb stuff seems to have more of a space theme. The story is about a robot, called a Scud. A disposable assassin, that you purchase from a vending machine, give it a target, it hunts it down, destroys it, then self destructs after completing it's job. the main character is a Scud who is given a target, and during his hunt and assassination attempts, he learns that he will die if he completes his mission. Becoming like any self aware robot, he doesn't want to die. So he confronts his target, Jeff, who ends up becoming his arch enemy. Jeff is a perfect example of this badorb character design style. Jeff is a 20ft creature with a Cat's body, an electric plug for a head (the round three-pronged kind), mousetraps for hands, a squid strapped across his belly, and human arms for legs, which evidently have mouths on the knees that speaks using soundbites from films, music, and historical events... Kinda like the Orb and how they use samplers. Anyways, the plot goes that as he learns he will self destruct, he just maims, Jeff, blowing off his arms and legs, and has a hospital put him on life support. So the series continues as Scud goes freelance hitman, to flip the bill for Jeff's hospitalization. the stories are violent, but extremely hilarious, and quite surreal and trippy. Fan's of Pulp Fiction would dig this series quite well. Currently the series seems to be in limbo, he got to a cliffhanger ending, and it just stopped. There was word long ago that there was a movie to be made and was in production, but who knows where that is now. If you are interested, stop by your local comic shop, and ask for it by name. You can pick up the bound paperback collections to save you the effort of finding all the issues. Every so often I do a search for my own name to see where it pops up online, and there are always several hits from mailings lists to which I've posted (usually accompanied by a reaction of "did I write *that*?"). Try it! Alternately, you could pretend that you're "seaturtle" looking for the LFC singles and I'll bet you'll get the same search results he did with various posts from this list. My guess would be that it's nothing too sinister; just some guy looking for LFC singles and using the net-related means at his disposal to do so. [granted, i understand everyone doesn't have acess to a record Well yes and no. Eil.com is notorious for listing shit that it once had and now no longer has. As far as this particular release being readily available, I'm gonna have to call your bluff on that one. I spent a while looking for these in stores and only saw it once. I mean, they were only promos released in small numbers. And once they're gone, they're gone. :) > player] but i'm curious if people are satisfied by just burning copies of > stuff that takes the slightest amount of effort to get ahold of? I am readily satisfied by burning copies until such time as getting actual physical copies is has come. I mean, it takes WAY less effort to burn a copy than to hunt and search and look for an actual copy. And for those who are in the middle of this process, making a copy is sometimes the only choice. > personally, i've spent a lot of time and money amassing the collection i > have, and no amount of MP3s compares to having the actual releases of these > items, with the accompanying artwork and some money going to the artist who > produced them. You are correct of course, but look at it from someone else's perspective: What if they don't have the money or time to spend that you do hunting things down? What if they live in the boonies where independant record stores playing this kind of music are scarce? It's not fair to assume everyone has your resources at their disposal. :) > am i showing my age here? No comment. :) :) :) > or is everyone just looking for a version to play > on their computers at work? am i the only one who finds the immediate > gratification of an MP3 less satisfying than a successful score at my local > shops? What if they live in the boonies where independant > record stores playing this kind of music are scarce? Hear, hear! Think of where I am! We have one independent music store here in town that I know of, and it seems to cater to the metalhead and noizepunk crowd. They think Paul Oakenfold is very obscure... > It's not fair to assume everyone has your resources at their disposal. [...] > No, but its not so black and white. Sometime you have to sacrifice > to joy of finding an actual copy in lieu of just being able to hear the > material in some form AT ALL! :) In my case it's nearly impossible to get anything but the most widely distributed albums. I had to buy ABTU online because nobody had it here, or could be convinced to order it (they said "That's some weird English album and it'd be a pain for us to order it from England." mostly because they'd pay some nasty shipping fees -- nevermind that it could be gotten from the US without any hard work :P). If I wanted something as obscure as the latest promo single then I'd be hard pressed to find it here even with a large spiked club in my hand. Also, keep in mind that shipping anything from the rest of America to Alaska is *very* expensive, since it either comes by boat or by plane. Ordering a single CD online nets me a shipping and handling charge of about $7 - $10. And that's the cheap fare. So often I have not much choice other than to get MP3s if I want to actually hear the music. I'd dearly love to have the actual CD releases, simply because they sound better and because I get to look at the cover art. And the experience is so much more visceral :). But one takes what one can get... So think about your brethren (and sestren) who live in the far corners of the world before you start decrying alternative music distribution methods (legal or not). Sometimes I feel more cut off than the Australian orbophiles. At least they get country-sized promotion. Alaska gets nothing. Except for Cinderella and Yngwie Malmsteen playing at Chilkoot Charlie's. Really? And yeah I forgot to mention the bit about (I assumed this was the case) how you got them all quick and stuff. > exactly my point. why walk down to the store for something which is a > current release when you can sit on your butt in front of the computer? You're taking my statement out of context. I wasn't implying that this should SUPPLANT the process of searching out your own legitimate copy but just that for those poor souls who, for whatever reason, are unable to get nice copies, being able to download one instantly is definately a bonus. > it is fair to assume that everyone has internet access, though. i live in > San Francisco and still wind up buying a lot of stuff online from england. And how much do you pay for shipping? And how much time do you spend on the internet trying to find this stuff? I mean, a lot of people try and limit the amount they use the internet every day either because they get charged hourly or they don't want to tie up their phone line or it just takes too long to do the footwork (most people in the US still use dialup). I mean, everybody doesn't have the cash to pay $8 for shipping and $20 for the record to some guy in the UK who knows that if you don't pay him his $30 someone else just like you will. For instance, when I was laid off, I had no income (except for good ole uncle sam's unemployment, which only just covered my rent + rice & beans every day). My desire for music wasn't lessened, but my internet access and cash flow were! Just reminding you to keep things in perspective. :) > and i ain't rich, i just have my priorities straight! =) [look for me > living in a cardboard box marked "Orb" next month] Heh heh. At least you have them in some semblence of order. :) > this is certainly true, my friend. always nice to hear the thoughts of > other fanatics like myself... Its so nice to be thought of as fanatical. Joking. :) I really am. I own far too much orb than any one person should be allowed to amass in one lifetime.
