(I'm a Mac girl, BTW) Hmm, well I used my soundcard and sent the signal to some outboard optical audio gear and then back to my HD. Then did some EQ work on it, boosted the signal and burned a CDR. Took quite alot of time, but worth it. Actually, I did more than that as I thought the EQ'd version sucked, I lost patience and went with the original mix (boomy just like maritime hall that night), boosted the signal and burned a disc. I still have the EQ'd version and when I have some time I may remove the extraneous hiss or just reEQ the original and try again. And the audio feed from the webcast largely rolls off at about 8000 Hz if anyone cares. I suspect that doesn't help much. - --spearman "it took hours and hours and hours and hours and after I was done with it I was so involved I didn't know what to think"--King Crimson _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 00:57:20 -0500 From: Martin Wallace Subject: (orb) good news (maybe) BadOrb.com isn't coming up tonight. Just how much of this cd is the original songs as they sound on their own releases, and how much of it is remixed, processed, or otherwise mutated? Obviously some of the samples are added on (esp the familiar Orb ones), but are the original artists doing any of the speech samples and such? I'm really enjoying exposure to a variety of stuff I haven't heard (nice thing about mix cds by good djs) but before I haul off and start exploring more material by the other artists, I'd like to have some idea how much of it is this good originally vs. how much it may have been tweaked - so hopefully the answer is "minimally." I now have no answers but figure that I'll try sending it to the list in 2 separate posts. Nonetheless, I'm planning on making a website displaying pictures and reviews from my tour. Well here's part 1, enjoy! Gavin - -------------------------------------------------- 4/14 Saturday, show 3 of 13 I wake up around Noon time in Sarasota at a frind of my dad's house. The last time I was here I was 10 years old! I stay for a bowl of cereal and conversation updating him on my family and the trip I am on. I stay as long as possible and end up hitting the road for Atlanta around 1:50. Thanks to Orb listee Jo Hannah, my gas tank is full and lasts me 450 miles into some podunk service stop along I-75 where fuel is their secondary product, almonds being their first. I stop inside to pay and see what they have to offer - lots of sweets but no real food. the clerk's accent is so thick that I can barely understand her questioning which pump it was I used. After I pay for my gas, I move my car to an out-of-the-way spot and update my journal. As I write this I witness some lady at a pump dump water onto the engine of her van, emitting a giant cloud of steam and grabbing everybody's attention, and a chuckle from me. I head back onto the road and make it to the Masquerade around 9:20. After finding a real nice parking space, I grab my camera and walk to the outside of the club and snap a photo of the marquee. Fearing the massive warnings written all over the outside "ABSOLUTELY NO CAMERAS" I decide to play it safe and put it back in my car. I get to the front gate of this converted 19th century factory painted all black and notice no line whatsoever, and fear the turnout will be low tonight. I present the bouncer my ID and collect my 3rd bracelet of the tour and head upstairs to "Heaven", the room where the show is taking place. upon my entry, I notice pool tables on my left and the stage on my right, barely visible through the dense fog. Prayerbox is currently on stage, so I know the show just started. There appears to be about 50 people in attendance, most socializing with each other, some checking out the merchandise stand, and the remainder in the billiards/bar area. I head to the bathroom to wire up my rig. After the rediculously long hike, I make it back and find a spot in the dead center of the quadrophonic setup, clutching the "Race For The Turtles" t-shirt that Jo Hannah tried to give LX in Tampa. Prayerbox is done and I can't see anybody on stage, partially due to the combination of fog and their blinding light setup directed into the crowd at eye level. People continue to trickle in and I keep my eyes peeled to appear friendly hoping that some fellow Orb listees will spot me. As some of the smoke clears, I can see that the stage has a particularly low clearence - so low that the giant Orb is obstructed by Simon's bass stack. I notice that there is a DJ on stage spinning a mellow set of Jamaican dub tunes, but he's nobody I recognize from the Orb crew, nor does he really dj with style or personality. After 20 minutes or so, Orb listee Jena Pratt is leaning against the barrier in front of the stage, turns around and notices me immediately. She comes upto me and introduces herself and her husband and tells me that they flew in from Austin. I tell them about the first two shows and how I anticipate this one being better yet. Autolump walks onstage, finally revealing their identity by the white DiY look of Fil's "Autolump" t-shirt. LX takes position on the left of the turntable setup spinning records and Fill on the immediate right is twisting knobs and pushing buttons. I look around the crowd and notice that there is no noticeable presence of security, much unlike the Masquerade in Tampa which was patroled heavily. I do notice a guy with black dreadlocks looking my direction, but carry on with my taping. Autolump finishes after a 35 minute set, the now 300 populous gives them a warm cheer as they walked off stage. LX comes back on and spins a few records, some Bad Orb stuff, some found on the Breezeblock set curently doing the rounds. He dissapears after 5 or so songs, to be replaced by Witchman. Most noticeably, tonight's the first show of the tour that Witchman has visuals to accompany his live set, which used to be nothing more than BadOrb.com's inages. The crowd seems to be 500 strong now, and as I'm recording, the dreadlocked guy approaches me and says "So you like the Orb enough to follow them around?" I ask him which list he's signed upto, and as it turns out, none. "I recognized you from the Boynton show. I live in Jacksonville, so I'm equally as far from both shows" He identifys himself as Ricky, and I tell him about my journey across the USA following the Orb. He then introduces me to his friend Darrin. Shortly after, another guy approaches me and says "So is this the best spot to hear the quadrophonic setup?" I give him a nod, and he stands in front of me, talking with a friend of his. He then turns around and asks me "By chance are you taping this show? What equipent are you using?" I show him my D-8 and he then reveals his M-1 to me. He starts to talk about mics and then realises that I'm TAPING and then apologises, gets quiet and turns around. Witchman's set sounds the same as the previous two, but the fidelity and volume of the Masquerade make it stand out. As Witchman ends his 45 minute set, the continually growing crowd cheers respectably then returns to conversation mode. The fellow taper approaches me and I stop rolling tape, tells me his name is Kevin and has never seen the Orb before and is interested in taping something different. We talk about prior shows taped, I tell him what to expect from the Orb, and talk about mics. I switch tapes in preperation for the Orb, and notice that I accidentally grabbed 90 meter tapes instead of 60's - and worry about my recordings not turning out due to the 90's poor track record with my deck. My worry about a low turnout apparently was unfounded, for it appears that the room is near capacity. During the pause Fil walks out onto stage and checks the gear again, then sets out towels. I tell Kevin that the Orb wil be out shortly and that I'd prefer to carry on the conversation afterwords. As I get setup in the spot that I felt would be good, luck would have it that a group of late teen gabby mouthed girls end up meeting a group of guys just to my left. I try to move as far forward and right as I can, hoping that somebody will stand between them and me. I check my clock and notice that it's 12:40, eager for the Orb to come on stage. Fil comes out and crouches by his post, and shortly after the rest of the guys do and are greeted with a loud roar. to my left a flashing red light catches my eye - some guy brought in a bike safety light and clipped it to the bill of his hat so that it flashes in his eyes.(?) At least this time it's not glow sticks... The house music dies down, and the little kid voice sample is echoing about as the intro music starts. "Mommy dont!" The rooster call is made and the crowd cheers again. Tonights intro music is dabbled heavily by old school Orb samples, and then followed by "The End" from the Apocalypse Now soundtrack. As the helicoptor sound spins around the room at high volume, A Mile Long Lump Of Lard starts. At the same time 2 teenage boys passing in front of me decide to stop and carry on a conversation. I forcefully look at them and tell them that they have to move. They look back and give me a dumbfounfded look, but move away quickly as my stare turns angry. The voice sample "You can feel the flash" plays out even louder yet, causing Witchman to flinch and look at LX with a smirk. The once dark and smokey room is now blindingly bright and smokey as the Orb get the show rolling. Witchy stops the mix abruptly at the end, but the voie sample continues to play on a few times, and then ends to a positive crowd reaction. LX segues to Promis with some minimalistic ambient sounds. Promis has the string section mixed in at low volume, and the rhythm to the track is very pronounced. Witchy's mixing on the track takes the rhythm out, then LX spins one of his own in its place as if they're dueling it out. More ambient sounds make the segue to Turn It Down, and Simon takes over the mixer from Witchman. LX continues to pummel the crowd with unidentifiable samples altered through the chaos pad as Simon carrys on with his own thing. Patrick mixes the non rhythm sounds to and from all corners of the room, and the rhythm tracks are stationary and very loud in the mix. Blue room begins with samples from the movie "Dark Star" and carrys on several minutes in the track. The voice sample "Ah wah wah ah wah" is both being played from the mix and LX DJing in the Mad Professor original, and gets a cheer from the crowd. The mix sounds good, but slightly off in its delivery. Witchy cuts out all the sounds except the high hat and LX plays a chorous from the record, which is reverbed out heavily. "Give into the creator..." Simon bobs his head in rhythm and either plays or stops the bassline at the nod of Witchy. 2001 samples overlap the last 2 minutes of Blue Room and carry on with a bunch of stray samples from the full length version. The sound of sonar sampled from a submarine make the bridge into Perpetual Dawn, which gets a lot of overlaping voices from South Park. "Dude! That was cool!" The trademark laugh gets manipulated through the quadrophonic setup followed by the monk chant that sounds like its straight from the heavens by its all encompassing sound and volume. The track sounds as if its about to end with a loud scream as witchy peels it back 1 layer at a time, only to dive back in with everything, then stripping it back down to nothing but the laugh as it ends. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
