As the track progresses, he mixes in bits and pieces of Paul Van Dyke's "Avenue" and then mixes it into a track I don't recognize, which is comprised of beats only. Then LX abruptly drops the needle onto Egnable and looks up to the ceiling as if he didn't know where it came from. He then looks over to Fil and points his finger and starts laughing moniacly at him, which Fil responds to by chasing LX across the stage with a humiliated smile and flailing fists. The chase ends with Fil, LX , and Witchy sharing a laugh, then returning to their places to start Terminus. Other than the site of LX bouncing around and a few bits of FFWD, tonights version has nothing more to offer than what the album version does. As it ends, Simon enters the stage again and picks up his bass. The high hat track kicks on, and the guy just to my right insists in showing his approval as loudly as possible. Simon improvises a bit on the bassline and LX plays samples from Toxygene, a sports announcer shouting "GoooooOOOAAaall!", along with the theme from Bonanza, plus a few other minor bits. The mix gets thrown quite a few echoey effects, really making this version stand out. Most of the in-between cuts sound to be extracts from 2001, as did the one that led into Outlands. After a minute of even more ambient space sounds, Little Fluffy Clouds was played. I was happy to see that they kept it's place in the setlist here instead of closing the show with it, as was the case in Boynton Beach. LX's treatment of the Ricki Lee Jones bits resembled the ending of the version from Live 93, with her voice fading in and out multiple times. Hamlet of kings was next, and I'm not certain if this is really a live track or a segue, with nobody on stage, I believe it's the latter. EDM comes on next, with Simon back at the mixer. Witchman comes back on stage with a camcorder and films the audience, and then takes the mixer back from Simon, who walks off stage. LX spins something other than space noise - distorted beats of some sort to take us into Thursday's Keeper. The crowd has thinned a bit after LFC, but that doesn't phase the rest of us. The charge anthem seems to only get a small reaction tonight but TK seems to be a lengthy version, with a few extra mixing tricks tagged onto the end. The guys wave goodnight, and Mr. Sandman is used as the show's outro music, and the video screens return to the BadOrb visuals. After the show ended, I went upto the stage to greet Jena and talked about their set. She tells me "This is the first time I've seen them live stone cold sober, and it's better than I imagined!" Her hubby said that all the songs sounded better live than on the album, and for the most part I agree. I ask them where they're staying and what time they're leaving in the morning, thinking that maybe I'll offer to meet them for breakfast, but when they say "first thing in the morning" I decide against it. I say good night to them, then Ricky and Darrin talk to me about my plans for the night and offer to smoke me up. I tell them that I want to hang around a bit, hopefully so I can give LX Jo's t-shirt. I walk over to the merchandise stand and purchase an Orb baseball cap and a Cydonia tee. Another customer there catches my eye with his mega-rare US ORB tour t-shit, and he compliments me on my Adventures Beyond t-shirt. we make small talk, I tell him about my tour plans and he wishes me safe travels. Kevin, Ricky and Darrin are standing around with his pink haired sister Rebecca and another guy named Alex, both Georgia Tech music students and talk about going back to their sound lab in the school to play around with their equipment. Since I have nowhere to be for a few nights, I say sure, giving up hope on running into LX tonight. Ricky and Darrin get into my car and I plug my DAT into my cassette deck a'la cd adapter and review the tape to see if it came out or not. And it did. Darrin comments on how good the sound is, even though my DAT wasn't meant to be played through a cassette player with an adapter that's not a perfect match. When we get to the Georgia Tech Campus around 2:30 AM, We gain entry to the music lab without problem and immediately the electronic drumkit catches my eye. Darrin plays a song on the computer as I continue to toy around with the electronic drums. After an hour in the lab, we say goodnight to Rebecca & Alex, and I drive Ricky, Darrin, and Kevin back to the parking lot across from the Masquerade. I drop off Kevin at his car, then Ricky insists I drive over to a secluded corner of the lot and brandishes a bowl. We continue to listen to the show on DAT, talk and enjoy. Darrin has to get back to Jacksonville relatively quickly, so we say goodnight, and Ricky insists he'll be fine for the lengthy drive - his sollution: take some speed. They tell me that it's been fun and wish me good luck for the remainder of my tour. After I drop them off, instead of driving to the interstate, I decide to drive by the venue to see if the Orb is still there. 4 AM. Sure enough, the crew is loading the tour bus. I pull in as Fil is pushing a box of gear of some sort, so I get out and say hello. I hand him the t-shirt, asking him to relay it to LX. At the same time, Alex (visuals guy) is walking past and notices my license plates "Look at the number tags! Fil!" Fil takes a peak and his eyes widen. "I guess you can say I'm a bit of a fan." Fil respnds "I guess so!" David walks by and Alex stops him to look at my plates, but his reaction isn't as noteworthy. Fil tells me that they're driving to New York, and I tell him I'm qiute familar with the tour schedule, having tickets to all the shows. "Oh your kiding! ALEX! This guy has tickets to all the shows!" I smile, and say good night. Fil responds "I'll give this (t-shirt) to LX. Have a safe drive." I tell them "I'll see you in New York!", get in my car and head north up I-85 with the plans of driving until I'm tired. Mission accomplished! the wrath of the Orbaddict has been sensed. As for the recording: 111 min in length, fidelity is very good, but has some bass spikes during Mile Long Lump and Promis. Crowd noise is less tonight until Hamlet Of Kings, where it becomes typical. The Autolump/Witchman tape didn't track, so I ended up with 2 hours of blank tape! Doh! Stupid 90 meter tapes! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hey orbsters, I've been lurking around here for awhile now & want to compliment everyone here on keeping up a good sane list. It's nice to see an internet forum where people are mature and respectful of each other. I was in a club a couple weeks ago where they were playing an orb song that I recognized but can't quite place. It has a sample of a female saying something like "It's only just the sun...". If I remember correctly she also says something about colors, "that's why all the colors...", or something. Due to background noise I could hear the sample but not the music clearly enough to place it. Does anybody remember what album-released song this is from? I think it's from an old ambient-tilted number, maybe from ABTU (although when I re-listened to that album I didn't catch it), maybe Live 93. I can *almost* hear it. There are 6 versions. The 2CD version, which wasn't "released" as the other versions were, which contains different edits etc from v1 or v2 and also contains the track Bicycles and Tricycles. An Internal sampler with 4 tracks on. Version 1, which contrary to what some people think, wasn't "released" on napster. Someone ripped it to mp3 from an original CDR and stuck it on a ftp site. The world seems to own it and has ripped it back to Audio. Version 2. Exactly the same mixes and edits as v1, just that Freely Wheely was replaced by the track Jam on yer Honey. No difference apart from that. Obviously the way the album is mixed i.e. the tracks together, and when skipping on a CD player the end part of some tracks is the beginning etc so it's not *exactly* the same mix, but I can assure you that the edits are the same i.e. you ain't missing anything. Version 3 - not marked as such on the cover, but this is the non UK version that is missing the track EDM. As others have said, the edits on some tracks are different from v1 or v2. I haven't bothered to check the times, but I know they are. Version 4 - again, not marked as such. This is the UK version i.e. has EDM as the "extra" track. Exactly the same as v3 in terms of edits and mixes. Version 3 & 4 are the retail version in the respective countries i.e. same mixes and track times. Hope this helps. Nah, I swear I heard some differences and even the slightest trained ear may beg to differ..... My UK special edition and the domestic release Is Different! Yep. Sorry, completely slipped my mind. I did post on this a while back, but NO-ONE seemed the slightest bit interested. I wonder why, despite the fact that several people asked the question............. The US and UK retail versions of Cydonia sound different. Dunno what it is or why, or even if it's a louder pressing or what. What I meant to say was "Version 3 and 4 sound no different to the UK retail copy [apart from the fact the EDM is missing off v3]".....jeez you fucking pedants ;-) Assume that whenever I talk about something I ain't talking about US releases, cos I'm not American. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 12:26:45 -0700 From: Tim C Subject: Re: (orb) Cydonia ver differ? > > Version 3 & 4 are the retail version in the > > respective countries i.e. same > > mixes and track times. > > Nah, I swear I heard some differences and even the > slightest trained ear may beg to differ..... > My UK special edition and the domestic release Is > Different! I challenge. Do a double-blind comparison on identical equipment and at identical levels (a dual-transport DJ deck and mixer of some sort would be useful here) and I bet there's not. Report back with results. I have heard both and noticed no difference (other than EDM of course - just doesn't sound the same on the neutered US version for some reason) - - but I have not tried this double blind experiment either. The point is subjective differences are easy to come up with, and your brain will perpetrate them if you believe them - (Hilarious example of psychoacoustics follows - read only if bored or some kind of audiophile - you have been warned): Once in a hi-fi magazine, there was a column on cables. Expensive vs. cheap, various constructions, etc. At any rate, the guy was arguing that they make no difference (beyond not using like thread or something that oxidizes horribly), contrary to popular audiophile opinion. Well, not only is his argument sound (from an engineering standpoint), he also had experience in the field. Namely, friend with thousands in gear but who was apparently some kind of idiot asks columnist to come over and help him install his new, $100/ft cable. So, columnist pretends to - then calls owner in to hear it. His reaction? "Oh, wow, this is fantastic! I can't believe I used to listen to that other crap." So, columnist suggests an experiment: "Why don't we put the old stuff back on and just see how it sounds?" So, he now hooks up the new cable sets and calls the owner back in. "Oh wow, I was right - this sounds terrible" etc. So, the columnist now pretends to put the new cables back on, and never tells the guy....
