[snip] You're correct in everything that you say about Undark 3396, but I have to comment that the guys who produced that record are Tom Smyth and Will Joss, who are also responsible for the Emit label release "Miasma." Although I do like the first Undark record, IMO Miasma blows it out of the water. The Emit label is long-gone, but Undark 3396 has been reissued on Bella Union under the title "Strange Familiar." As for "Pearl + Umbra," I wasn't expecting to be impressed but was. It's more dynamic and song-driven than Strange Familiar, with an excellent contribution from Sylvian ... I'd recommend it to anyone who's into Hector Zazou kind of stuff. - -=Seofon # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 23:52:10 -0700 From: "Seofon" Subject: Re: (orb) Best of the 90s?!? > The 90s were > arguably THE worst decade for rock music (even worse > than the 1960s...). Well, let's not forget what the music industry is about. It's about the rock & roll lifestyle, the flavor of the day, the circus act, the three-minute radio gem, the hook, and so on. The '80s took all those things to their logical extreme, so when the '90s came along there was not much place left to go ... not within the industry paradigm, anyway. Enter electronica. But, for anyone who thinks that rave/techno music didn't have it's dark underbelly, just let me say "2 Unlimited." =) In other words, I think the "90s" ended up being more about transitions within the system than music for its own sake. > And electronic pioneers like Depeche Mode (no flames please - yes > they are whiny and lame usually but Violator is one of the greatest > techno albums ever made - Wilder/Flood/Kervorkian (sp?) - bwah). (Yes, > they just suck now.) Flames? Au contraire. Any DM album from Some Great Reward through Violator easily holds its own against any of today's rock-tronica. > Ok. Chemical Brothers blow goats. They are highly over-rated, > sample-stealing, rock-and-roll wannabe, pretentious freaks :) Flame away. > I have NEVER been impressed by anything they did. Well ... I wouldn't go that far. I remember when that record with "Chemical Beats" on it came out, it was the best thing going. But from there it was downhill. > I mean, we have circus acts like Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, Brittany... And > then the really terrible R'n'B which has permeated the market. Yeah ... in all seriousness, what is up with that stuff? But, on the other hand, I have to admit that I do like their equivalents from other countries ... Faye Wong (China), Die Fantastischen Vier (Germany), etc. Maybe it's essentially just America that's getting scary. > I think there was *tons* of good music in the 90s (especially lots of early > 90s hip-hop) If Deltron 3030 and Quasimodo are any indication, there's no danger of a shortage in that department. Anyways, my list: Technotronic, C+C Music Factory, Cathy Dennis, Samantha Fox, Blue Pearl, Trinere, Shannon, Roxette, Jesus Jones, Men At Work, Snap, Cyndi Lauper, "Weird" Al Yankovic, Martika, Kylie Minogue, Betty Boo, Pebbles, Duran Duran, and Lisa Lisa (with or without Cult Jam). Added to this, the version of the Keiichi Suzuki track ("Satellite Serenade") sounds as though it's a completely different take on the "Transasian Express Mix" (i.e. it's different from the UK 'Auntie Aubrey' and CD Single on AO Records, with more samples (cars skidding, etc). The US issue loses the Primal Scream, Depeche Mode, Erasure & Love Kitten mixes (down to licensing issues?), but gains the following 2 tracks: - - David A Stewart & Candy Dufler - Lily Was Here (Space CentreMedical Hum) - - Marathon - Movin' (Ambientapella Live Mix) It looks like Auntie Aubrey II is out on September 4th (at least in the US), with the tracklisting duplicating the David A Stewart track (unless they mean the 'orbital space lab mix' - the other mix of 'Lily Was Here' by the Orb). Off the Warp site "Latest North America Plaid/Squarepusher /Mira Calix Tour News" Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher is still ill and will not be coming to USA/Canada for any of the remaining tour dates, this is incredibly dissapointing for every one concerned but its out of our control. We have been sweating the phones today to make sure Plaid and Mira Calix can still play some more dates and we have managed to organise a scaled down version of the tour. It was not possible to carry on with the full tour as previousley planned because (understandably) many of the promoters either pulled the show or severely reduced their fee offers on hearing the news that Tom had cancelled ,making it impossible for the tour party to continue without incurring huge financial losses. These are two wonderful albums, and although I love the previous three, I haven't played them once since Kid A came out. "How to disappear completely" is one of the best songs they have ever done. As for pretentious, don't think so at all. It's great that they have evolved in this way and are making music that they want to make as opposed to making another OK Computer (which wouldn't have been a bad thing either), and who can blame them? Kinda like when the Orb made Pomme Fritz...... martin # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2001 22:14:15 -0700 From: organism@hydrophilus.com Subject: (orb) Cold, Funk, Fries, Fear, Fluff, Sex, and Heaven BadOrb. Bad, bad, bad..... Okay, I gotta de-lurk long enough to stick my neck into the proverbial jaws of death.... All this going on about "Badorb". I have several times [and with several different machines and as many browsers, just in case] peeked at this badorb website. All I get is a logo, which is hyperlinked to a copy of itself. Completely and totally devoid of any information whatsoever. And so the potentially lethally backfiring question: What the hell /is/ it? I get from the list that "it" is a set of approximately three pieces of vinyl, some mysterious MP3s, and some anti-nudity-units that have something to do with our Alma Mater Listus, all or some of which may or may not actually be delivered to those that paid for [it, them]. So, is there a non-super-mysterioso site that lists some cold hard details? Anyone wish to brave the storm and slip me some info? Is this /official/ Orbware, or is it periphery? Who is it that is to be trundled out to the guillotine for non-shipment of aforementioned goodies? And, most of all, for those of us [me] that are so woefully behind the times, "Now that the sale is over, where do I get to hear these celebrated tunes?". Party on. Rock. I say, /RAWK/ ! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2001 22:52:12 -0700 From: "Nexus" Subject: (orb) Ayumi Hamasaki I think someone mentioned this, but I don't remember any respones, how many of you that ordered BOB2 actually got the one that sounds like the one on the website? The record I got is a nice little downtempo dub that IMHO is lot better and completly different than what was sampled on the site. The paper labels it as Ayumi Hamasaki- Monochrome a: Eurofen Dub b: Bonus Kaos Mix which is different than on the site. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 02:15:20 -0400 From: rob buse Subject: Re: (orb) Ayumi Hamasaki Ayumi Hamasaki is a huge Japanese pop star.
