OK, I hate to veer off topic and start another flame war, but is anyone else out there wondering what the HELL happened to Richard James? I consider SAW II to be one of the finest ambient (ok, one of the finest pieces of ANY) music out there. He ran the gamut all the way to really hard techno, too - Caustic Window/Joyrex J9 for example. The On EP. The On single (Mu-Ziq mix my personal favorite). The A303 EP. The Xylem Tube EP (Polynomial C, Tamphex). Digeridoo - which I saw him play live in Seattle while the crowd just stood there not even knowing what it was. Everything went to hell right around "I care because you do." Seems like Autechre went the same way - from music to boring shite - they were just more gradual about it, with periodic returns like the "Autechre" album that was all black and a nice reminder of what they could do. And we see this with all kinds of people. Just one example - the widely respected DJ Dan. Well, I don't know if he did the song entirely himself or not, but he went from The Electroliners/Loose Caboose classic to the insipid Needle Damage - whatever. Are people in electronica that uninspired? I just saw David Byrne and that guy is 52 or something and just keeps going. In fact, "Once In a Lifetime" was played with a pretty chunky guitar part and the 2 drummers doing a rich, full breakbeat. Many Talking Heads classics were presented totally rearranged - not just rehashed - and his new stuff was fresh and interesting as well. Yet people keep giving dolts like Richard James money - quit encouraging him, for pete's sake. And giant thanks to LX for staying true to his vision - changing enough so that it's not boring but not just churning out overly experimental shite (Pomme Fritz seemed so at the time, but in retrospect it fits in very well - a quick release of way OT stuff, yet a logical intro for the coming Terrarum). Contrary to some dissenting views, I welcome the addition of some vocals on Cydonia, as they fit in and are appropriately Orb-y - it's not like he turned into U2 or something. It's a nice progression. While Orblivion has great stuff on it, I find Cydonia a more flowing, diverse offering. Unfortunately they are both from the late 80's and really hard to find. I was wondering if there was anyone who can help me out. I have some cool stuff to trade, or just money if that suits you. They are easy to find on vinyl, but like I said I'm after the CD. One is made in Belgium, so maybe someone in that area of the world can help me out. He does a good job on his own if you ask me. A while ago I read that he was programing some software to write his music for him so he'd have more time to "shag".
