I'm posting this to the List because there might be others who don't know about these super pens. Pentel makes ballpoint pens--they have a brand name of HYBRID-- with gold and silver inks. They retail for about $2 each. The silver is ultra yummy. The gold is a more yellowish gold than suits my taste. But both are great for doing line work on cards--oh! and you can write with them, too (forgot about that!). They are probably a medium point. Check for them at craft stores, college book stores, office supply stores. They're very available in our area--Oregon. - --Ardyth ------------------------------ From: "Misty D. Sharman" Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 21:36:16 -0600 Subject: Heat Embossed Swap Cards Here is my attempt at describing the lovely cards I received in this, my first, swap: From Linda Skirvin: A pretty basket of spring flowers with the saying "Think Spring" on it. The basic card is dark green cardstock. The next layer is a pretty paint spattered looking wallpaper in greens, cut with decorative scissors. (Now this being my first card swap, I didn't realize that the credits were on the back and I spent quite a few minutes trying to figure out how many different colors of paint Linda used to speckle up this paper, only to eventually flip the card over and discover what an idiot I am...it was wallpaper!) Too bad you included the credits as I was VERY impressed with your spattering abilities, Linda. ;) I had received one of those spattering doohickies for Christmas and haven't had much luck with my spattering. Mine looks more like globbies than spatters. ;) Sorry, I am digressing..... On top of the wallpaper, she layered the "Think Spring" saying, also cut with decorative scissors; and the basket of lovely flowers. And to top it all off, she included a pretty, abstract floral, homemade envelope to coordinate with the floral theme of the card. Very pretty! BTW, Linda, I love the way you did your stamp credits. I think I'll be stealing your method for my future swaps. Hope you don't mind!! The next card is from Captain.. I hope I describe this one correctly, there weren't any descriptions on the back of this one. If I don't, please forgive me!! It is a pretty tree, stamped using a rainbow pad (I think) and embossed in a sparkly kind of powder (maybe hologram?). It was cut out and layered onto the bottom of a piece of pale yellow paper. Also layered onto the paper at the top was a pretty Merry Christmas saying. The next card is from Susan Sproc. The basic card here is white cardstock with pretty red and blue speckles (yes, actually HAND SPECKLED!! As you can tell, I am enamored with anyone who has this speckling stuff mastered!!). Next is a criss-cross layering of red and blue mulberry paper. Layered on top of the mulberry paper are three butterflies, two large ones and one small one. The butterflies were stamped onto dark blue paper and embossed in gold powder and cut out. A GREAT layered card! The next card is from Janice Rollin. The basic card here is made of lilac paper. On this is stamped two pretty birds. One in the top left corner and one in the bottom right corner. In the center of the card is stamped a spray of pink tulips with some greenery. Layered on top of the flowers is a vase, so that it looks like the flowers are actually IN the vase. Very pretty and spring-ish. And boy am I ready for Spring!! The next card is from P. Watson. The basic card here is a kraft colored cardstock which has had the corners rounded. Layered next is a piece of cream colored specialty paper with gold and silver flecks in it, also with rounded corners. Not sure if it is a mullberry paper or not, but it is very pretty. Layered next is a picture of a very pretty covered bridge embossed in gold and cut out with the stamp edged decorative scissors. Very pretty. Reminds me of one of my FAVORITE books, The Bridges of Madison County!! And last, but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST is Geevee's card. The basic card here is white cardstock. Layered next is a piece of dark blue cardstock. Layered onto that is another piece of cardstock that has been stamped, cut with decorative scissors, and layered to depict an angel flying across the night sky. It is colored with blue chalk from the bottom to the top in a graduation of light to dark. It has gold stars glued into the "sky" and stamped along the bottom edge is a row of dark green trees. Not sure what kind of ep was used, but there are speckles of gold on the trees. Very unusual and pretty. (How DID you do that Geevee?) The very last layer is an angel being pulled through the sky by a dove. She is absolutely georgous! I love the colors you used on her Geevee. I especially love her wings. They are so beautiful!! Oh, I almost forgot. The dove is in 3-D. I just love this technique. It really makes it special. Thanks to Jodie Tamaye for hosting this swap!! And thanks to all who participated!! I really enjoyed it and look forward to hearing about the other cards. The Stamp Maine-iac Annette Aslin ------------------------------ From: Juliet Page Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 22:34:36 -0500 (EST) Subject: Inexpensive Light Box I've got an easy & cheap way to get a light box! You'll need: 1. two blocks.... 2 things about 3 or 4 inches tall, by 3 or 4 inches wide and about 6 or 8 inches deep. Perhaps 2 2x4 scraps nailed together, or (what I used :) two recipe boxes. I suppose you could also use fabric covered bricks or books stacked up. 2. A piece of clear acrylic or glass for your working surface.... 8 x 10 is the smallest I could stand. You can get some from a glass shop or else a picture frame... even the acrylic ones might work. I had scrap acrylic about 3/8 inch thick from one of my hubby's projects. 3. An extension cord 4. a circular flourescent bulb (about 6" diameter) which plugs into a standard bulb socket (available at hardware stores or home centers like Home Depot, Lowes, Ace etc...) (Methinks I paid about $5 several years ago... but methinker might be mistaken ) 5. An outlet to bulb converter (also available at hardware shop etc..) (maybe a few bucks?? I can't recall exactly.) Now to make it.... Set up the two blocks on your work surface and lay the acrylic or glass across the top. This gives you a mini table on your table. Plug into the extension cord the outlet to bulb converter. Screw the flourescent bulb into this. Place the flourescent light under your mini-table and plug it in! Voila' A light box! BTW - Do spend the extra $$ for a flourescent bulb, because they don't get nearly as hot as the regular ones. In fact you can easily touch it after it's on for and hour or so without burning your hands. This is especially important if you're using glass. I cracked my glass coffee table top (one of the really thick ones!) once because I was using a clip on light under that for my makeshift light box. The thermal stress on the underside was too much for the thickness of the glass so it cracked. :( Mega bummer. Since then my hubby picked up an extra surpulus light box for me from work. Yippee! Interesting thing is that it uses flourescent bulbs, but the top is translucent white instead of clear. If you can find that it might work too. :) The Cottage Stamper ------------------------------ From: gardner@datastar.net (R.
