How to use that Inexpensive Light Box >I'm sorry to bother you, but since you put directions for a light box, I >figured you'd certainly know what it's for! I, too, have some of those >brass stencils and am wondering how you use the light box. I use it to line up the brass stencils and homemade stencils for dry embossing. It lets you see through the card to exactly position the stencils. Here's a long writeup I did a while back on Dry Embossing for the technique swap about how to make your own custom stencils to match your stamps. Sorry for the repeat those of you who remember seeing it way back when, but I figure there are enough new folks it might bear repeating. :) The Cottage Stamper Dry Embossed Card & Template Directions Juliet Page, AKA The Cottage Stamper Technique Swap, March 1996 Materials: Assorted Stamps, inks & embossing powders Cardstock Thin Cardboard like from shirts or nylons Stylus (knitting needles and other smooth semi-pointy things also work) Light Table (Bright Sunny window is a good substitute) Waxed paper (optional) Directions: When designing a card there are several things to consider: Which stamped images do I want raised up, and which do I want indented into the paper? Are the dry embossed areas going to be geometric or follow the actual stamped image? What about overlapping areas? Once you’ve decided on the basic design stamp the card and emboss (the heat gun type). There are two basic dry embossing (DE) template types, Positive & Negative. What I call a positive template is where you trace around the outside. A negative template, is one where you trace around the inside. I generally make my own positive templates, since they’re easier. Commercially available brass stencils, and plastic stencils for painting are what I call Negative stencils. To make a positive dry embossing template, stamp your design onto the cardboard. The stamped part of the image is the “keep” part. For geometric shapes such as rectangles etc.. I suggest using a paper cutter or T-square to get perfect 90 degree corners. For some reason crooked corners are really obvious when using this technique. You might also want to try using a corner rounder or fancy scissors to achieve a different “look.” When creating “custom” positive templates I use a regular scissors and trim to within about 1/8” of the stamped image. You can also try trimming closer, but I’ve found that the stylus tends to smudge off the embossing (the heated stuff) too easily. A way around this might be to dry emboss first, and stamp second, but personally I can never get the stamp to line up properly. To make a negative dry embossing template, again stamp the design onto thin cardboard. This time, when trimming around the image, the image is the “throw-away” part, and the blank space around the image becomes the stencil. An Exacto knife works well for trimming. Choose a geometric or free-form shape. The fancy Craft punches will also make great negative templates. Try lining up 4 or 5 in a row. For a “popped-out” DE using a positive template, at the light table line up and layer up the following, from bottom to top: Cardboard DE template, stamped side UP, card, Stamped side UP and waxed paper. With the stylus, trace on the face of the card, around the template causing the background to recess, and the image to pop-out. Be careful not to let the stylus “slip” as these stray marks will show on the front of the card. Sometimes they can be “erased” by carefully rubbing them out with a larger tipped stylus... but often not. For an “indented” DE using a positive template, at the light table line up and layer up the following, from bottom to top: DE template stamped side down, card, stamped side down, waxed paper. With the stylus trace around the outer edges of the DE template causing the stamped image to be recessed, or in actuality, the background to be pushed forward. Slips are not as critical, since they will be on the back side. For a “popped-out” DE using a negative template, at the light table line up and layer up the following, from bottom to top: DE template, right side DOWN, card, Stamped side DOWN and waxed paper. With the stylus, trace on the back side of the card, around the inside edges of the template causing the image to pop-out. For an “indented” DE using a negative template, at the light table line up and layer up the following, from bottom to top: DE template right side up, card, stamped side up, waxed paper. With the stylus trace around the inner edges of the DE template causing the stamped image to be recessed. Depending on the margin between the stamping and the template, this technique may cause smearing of the inked artwork. Some things to consider: The diameter of the stylus affects the embossed look. The smaller the stylus, the sharper & crisper the raised/indented shape. Conversely, the larger the diameter the rounder and smoother the indentation. However, larger diameter styluses create raised areas which appear thicker than those created by smaller diameter styluses. The thickness of the cardboard also affects the results. This technique doesn’t work well, or easily on thinner papers. The stylus just rips the paper. The wax paper is optional, however I’ve found that it makes the stylus slide much more smoothly, requiring application of less finger pressure, a point to consider when making several cards. As with most things, play around with the technique & have fun! ------------------------------ From: "Mariann at S.C.P. And should you laminate them? Guess that would be smart!! =) Nicole, Let me see if I can give you my point of view on your questions: 1. I usually stamp on card stock. Usually on white cardstock, but sometimes on colored. 2. Sometimes I choose an image that fits the time of year that the convention is (example: October, Halloween). Sometimes I choose a favorite image (a dragon), sometimes I choose an image that I am embellish - for example, I did a moon and stars where I glued a star shaped bead over one of the stars after I laminated it. 3. I have done 30, 40 and 50 pins for conventions. But in all three cases, I ran out of pins before the convention was done. This time I plan on bringing more than 100 pins. Look at it this way, the more pins you make, the more you can trade, and any left over can be sent to your rubber stamping buddies, or kept for the next convention. 4. For handing them out. Look for people wearing pins, and ask "Are you trading pins?". More than likely the answer is YES. 5. Laminating them helps them stay nice. Another tip: Wear a shirt you don't mind putting pins into, or wear a vest to pin them onto. This is my first pins-at-convention experience. I admit I used Judy Perry's idea of making one sheet and then color copying it. (I know it is cheating but still....), then I cut 2 big pieces of laminate and laid my entire sheet of cardstock on it face down, and smoothed. Then I put the back piece on and smoothed. Then I ran my fingernail (side) over the whole thing, scratching each pin down. I had foiled part of my pins (so at least something on all the pins was done by hand) and I had to really scratch around the foiled part. But it came out nice. I then cut out all the pins and glued pin backs to each one. I have about 30 right now. I am starting small as this is my first time doing pins.
