That made me realize just how many people at a business who are not allowed to deal with money, have access to my cc numbers. When you pay for a meal with your cc you do not see what that waiter/waiteress does with your card. They could be making a copy of the info and you never know. What is funny is that everyone is so nervous about cc numbers on the internet and yet it takes a lot of special equipment and knowledge to steal a number from email. I'm 31, live for the moment in College Park, GA, which is just outside Atlanta, near the airport. My partner and I are in the process of buying a house in the next town over, in East Point. It's all very exciting but I'm not buying any new stamp supplies for a while! :( I was born in Philly and lived in Roslyn and North Wales, PA as a kid. When I was 9 my family moved to Ocean City, NJ and are still there. I went to Our Lady of Mercy Academy for high school and then to University of Delaware, which I loved. Graduated 1988 and went to Emory University in Atlanta for grad school in US history. I liked a lot of things about grad school, especially teaching. Unfortunately, I learned that I do *not* like open-ended historical research projects (like my dissertation) which you have to do a lot of to have a career in history these days. I also did not like the state of the academic job market. So in early 1996 I started looking for a new career (I did complete my Masters in History and am "ABD" (All But Dissertation) for a Ph.D.) I got a job as a writer/editor working on computer-based healthcare training. I changed jobs last fall and am now a technical writer and trainer for an engineering company. So I still get to teach! In fact, next week and the week after I go on my first training trips. Sadly, that will mean I'll be unsubbed here for at least 2 weeks! I have been with my girlfriend and life partner, Jan, for 2 1/2 years now. She is the most amazing, best thing that has ever happened to me. We are apretty good team. Other interests (besides stamping) include: reading, writing, cooking, and soon, home decorating! I like science fiction a lot (though not as fanatic as I used to be) and comic books (ditto), and I love all kinds of movies. I listen to every kind of music, but right now I'm really into the current revival of rockabilly and swing/Western swing. I have been stamping for just over a year. I love all aspects of paper crafts and have a long list of things I want to try. Doing anything in visual arts is still a very new adventure to me and I'm loving all of it. I found this list last January and have learned an awful lot, and made some great friends too. So that's me... I was very excited when I received my first RAK (Random Act of Kindness) and I've RAK'd others who also were excited to receive their first one. To further explain what a RAK is, someone on the list challenged us to send a card to someone for no apparent reason. Not a birthday, anniversary, swap etc. but just for the fun of it. It really caught on and we all enjoyed receiving these unexpected cards. Someone called it a Random Act of Kindness and it stuck. The Wannabee RAK'd List is for those who have never been RAK'd and want to be. If that's you, just send me your name and address with a request to be added to the Wannabees. It will not be posted to the whole list, only to those seeking a name to RAK. Likewise if you would like to RAK someone who has never been RAK'd contact me for the latest list. Some send only a card or postcard,(signed or unsigned) others include small token gifts, such as postoids, um's, background papers, embellishments, once I even received homemade chocolates! So most anything can be a RAK. [Not to be confused with the "Snail Mail List" which requires filling out a form and lists everyone who does this. This is an interesting topic of discussion!!!! First off, let me say, there are some pretty darn good RS Artists on our list who DO work in card format!!!! Art is personal....no matter what size or format you use to convey ideas. I have begun working in larger size formats...the smallest I work right now is 5x7. I do very much enjoy working in 8.5x11 size format..and I'm starting work on my first 11x17 this week. I love the freedom a larger size format offers me. Seems I always have so much more to say....and smaller size formats end up looking cramped and kinda ugly when I try to work them. Most of my artwork is framed, and I've also started working on a pretty cool surface called Claybord, which is nice and looks perfect to hang on the wall as is or framed. Claybord will take about any kind of color medium you choose to use, and looks FANTASTIC! My goal, is to get more of my artwork published this year... and to come up with enough good pieces that I can interest a few local art galleries here to put my stuff up there. I want EVERYONE here to know, rubber stamping can lead you anywhere you want to go, if you put enough engergy into it. Self expression is so very important... and no matter which format you prefer to use, do something which you feel strongly about. DO NOT think of yourselves as simply "rubber stampers"..think of yourselves as "Rubber Stamp Artists"..because that is what you truly are. Picasso used a paint brush to create his artwork..rubber stampers use rubber stamp images. Think about it. Here it is: Rain, Sleet, Hail or Snow Hell no! We won't go!! This was the creed they delivered our mail by. So, we stamped sign of this, and slapped them on the PO door. The mailman read it, laughed, and left it for 3 days! Gotta love a city where the MALL has a "Center for Peace and Justice" store selling rainforest stuff and goods from Guatamala... I spent the summer of 1993 at Middlebury's language school studying Japanese, it was a great experience. One thing that I really liked about Burlington at the time is that it had (maybe still has) a taiko dojo--something I would love to study some day. Taiko are those big Japanse drums--I dind't see the Nagano opening cermonies but bet taiko figured in it. There are several troupes in the US but most are in the West Coast. I saw the Burlington group perform during town days a t Middlebury and it blew me away! You live in a great town, Wendy!
