I recall that the best ones were made from shoe boxes. The idea is to recreate the appropriate setting and then add 3 dimensional characters to the "floor" of the diorama. I did one, I remember, of Native Americans of the North East. I cut paper to got from the left front along the entire left side, across the back, and then across the entire right side of a shoe box. Before I glued and taped the paper in, I drew trees and forests, etc. (here's a place to stamp). Then I created what I thought were Indian dwellings and glued them to the floor of the shoebox. Some Indian figures, made from popsicle sticks and cloth were added along with some "grass" and "trees". I loved it and remember getting an "A" on it. Sharman" Date: Wed, 5 Feb 1997 19:00:53 -0600 Subject: Re: Heat Embossed Swap Here is my attempt at describing the lovely cards I received in this, my first swap: From Linda Skirvin: A pretty basket of spring flowers with the saying "Think Spring" on it. The basic card is dark green cardstock. The next layer is a pretty paint-spattered-looking wallpaper in greens, cut with decorative scissors. Now, this being my first swap I didn't realize that some people put very detailed descriptions of what they did to construct their cards (Linda is one of those people)and I spent quite a few minutes trying to figure out how many different colors of paint and what type of paint Linda used to speckle up this paper. Only to eventually turn the card over and discover what an idiot I am..it was WALLPAPER!! :) Too bad you included such good instructions on your card, Linda, because I was VERY impressed with your speckling abilities!! :) I received one of those speckling doohickies for Christmas and haven't had much luck with it. My speckles look more like globbies! ;) Sorry....I am digressing....On top of the wallpaper, she layered the "Think Spring" saying (also cut with decorative scissors) and the basket of lovely spring flowers. And to top it all off, she included a pretty, abstract floral, handmade envelope to coordinate with the floral theme of the card. Very pretty. BTW, Linda, I love the way you documented your card info. If you don't mind, I'll be stealing your documentation method for my future swaps. The next card is from Captain...I hope I describe this one correctly, there weren't any descriptions on the back of this one so I'll do my best guessing. Please forgive me if I don't get it just right. This card is a pretty tree, stamped using a rainbow pad (I think) and embossed in a sparkly kind of powder (maybe hologram?). It was cut out and layered onto the bottom of a piece of pale yellow paper. Layered onto the top portion of the paper was a pretty "Merry Christmas" saying. The next card is from Susan Sproc. The basic card here is white cardstock with pretty red and blue speckles (yes, actually HAND SPECKLED!! As you can tell, I am enamored with anyone who has this speckling stuff mastered, and believe me...Susan does!!) Next is a criss-cross layering of red and blue mullberry paper. Layered on top of the mullberry paper are three butterflies, two large one and one small one. The butterflies were stamped onto dark blue paper and embossed in gold powder and cut out. A GREAT layered card!! The next card is from Janice Rollin. The basic card here is made of lilac colored paper. On this is stamped two pretty birds. One in the top left corner and one in the bottom right corner. In the center of the card is stamped a spray of pink tulips with some greenery. Layered on top of the flowers is a vase, so that it looks like the flowers are actally IN the vase. Very pretty and spring-ish. And boy am I ready for Spring!! The next card is from P. Watson. The basic card here is a kraft colored cardstock which has had all four of its corners rounded. Layered next is a piece of cream colored specialty paper with gold and silver flecks in it, also with all four corners rounded. I THINK this may be mullberry paper, but not sure. Layered next is a picture of a very pretty covered bridge embossed in gold and cut out with the stamp edged decorative scissors. Very pretty. Reminds me of one of my favorite books, The Bridges of Madison County!! And last, but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST is Geevee's card. The basic card here is white cardstock. Layered next is a piece of dark blue cardstock. Layered onto that is another piece of cardstock that has been stamped, cut with decorative scissors, and layered to depict and angel flying across the night sky. It is colored with blue chalk from the bottom to the top in a graduation of light to dark. It has gold stars glued into the "sky" and stamped along the bottom edge of the card is a row of dark green trees. Not sure what kind of ep was used, but there are speckles of gold in the trees. Very pretty and unusual! (How DID you do that Geevee?) The very last layer is an angel being pulled through the sky by a dove. She is absolutely georgous!! I love the colors you used on her Geevee!! I especially love her wings. They are so pretty. Oh, I almost forgot, the dove is 3-D. I just love this technique. It really adds a special spark to a card. Thanks to Jodie Tamaye for hosting this swap! And thanks to all who participated. I really enjoyed it and look forward to hearing about all the other cards from this swap. Is this the correct way to do it, or am I supposed to trim the rubber *after* placing the untrimmed unm on it? That seems as if it would be wasteful. If you are interested in scrapbooking/photo albums Id say its worth your trip. Thats what I found at this years HIA show. Lots of really neat stuff for all levels of this craft. There was enough to get me motivated! Anyway some of the other stuff wont be here in time, such as the new home decor stamp sets. Really nice and doesnt have to be used to home decor. I think stampers will enjoy the photo tinting kits, you know the stuff that makes new (or old) photos look like antique photos with the tinting. Also some new texture techniques with the metallic rub-ons. Lots of new stuff is coming in--in fact I have so much stuff I cant even remember whats coming anymore! Although alot of stuff will cross over for stampers, most of it is scrapbookers treasures. We do have MARY JO MC GRAW coming this May for classes (Judi-kins). She is great! Hope you get a chance to sign up. She just faxed me her class list and I dont know what to choose, they all sound so great!
