Stamps" Subject: RS: telemarketers- reply Jannie, Please don't be offended. The only reason I'm so quick to be able to pull my sales pitch off on people who call me is because I do telemaketing myself. When I need to pick up more customers. I use my local telephone book. Maybe one out of every 100 people I call ends up being a customer. So I know it's tough doing the telephone bit. So, When I recieve calls from telemarketers, I am one of those 99 that don't need the service offered. No biggy right? Oh and get this. When I do cold calls like that. I do them a little differently. As soon as the person answers the phone, I sing them a little jingle like, Good Morning to You, Good Morning to You. It catches there attention and then I tell them why I called. At the very least. I get a chuckle from them and they say "Thank You for calling anyway." Much better than "No, I Am Not Interested" Hang Up. I love my new technique. It's makes cold calling fun for me, Since one of my many occupations is "Female Vocalist" "Luv" Mariann JannieQ@aol.com wrote: > Folks: > > While I hate telemarketers as well as the rest of you, unles they are selling > me something I cannot live without (laminate, RS, stuff like that). I always love to get my orders just so I can see how Ellen has decorated the envelope! Yesterday's was just what I needed to cheer up. Today I got my Easter Egg template from Phil. Way cool- I can see that I'll have to make some samples and play! I was home sick the other day and in my Nyquil and cough syrup induced daze I watched Mr. Rogers. He had an artist on the show who was making very cool background paper. The artist used tissue paper and painted on it with watered down arylic paint- very pretty and swirly. The second technique used some other (heavier) paper. He took a scrap of carpeting and dipped the BACK (rough) side of it into acrylic paint and across the sheet of paper. With a second piece of carpet and a second color of paint he did it in the opposite direction on the paper. Awesome plaid. So who knows- you too can learn helpful techniques from Mr. Rogers! CLOCKS A man passed away and went to heaven. Arriving at the pearly gates, St. Peter said, "come on in. I'll show you around. You'll like it here." Walking through the gates, the man noticed clocks everywhere. There were grandfather clocks, wall clock, watches, and clocks in every corner. It appeared that heaven was nothing more than a giant clock warehouse. Surprised at how heaven looked, the man asked, "St. Peter, what's the deal? Why are all these clocks here in heaven?" St. Peter replied, "The clocks keep track of things on earth. There is one clock for each person. Every time the person on earth tells a lie, his clock moves one minute." "For instance, this clock is for Sam, the used car salesman. If you watch it closely, it will move." "Click." The minute hand on Sam's clock moved one minute. "Click." It moved another minute. "Sam must be into closing a customer right now," said St. Peter. "The minute hand on his clock moves all day." The man and St. Peter continued walking. Soon, they came to a clock with cobwebs on the minute hand. "Whose clock is this?" asked the man. "That clock belongs to the widow Mary. She is one of the finest, God-fearing, people on earth. I bet her clock hasn't moved in a year or two." They continued walking and touring heaven. The man enjoyed watching the clocks of all his friends. When the tour was finished, the man said, "I've seen everyone's clock but President Clinton's. Where is his clock?" Saint Peter smiled, "Just look up. We use his clock for a ceiling fan." And if they do get a permit I can see them at the door and chose not to answer. Yet a telemarketer which is doing door to door in a very same way, requires no permit and I don't even know I'm going to me hit with the sales pitch until I pick up the phone because they usually block the caller id. The other thing is that I've been keeping track and over 95% of the calls that I've gotten this month (I work at home) the person at the other end will lie to keep you on the line within the first 30 seconds. As soon as they give me a name I don't reconize I say "what are you selling", every one except one said nothing, and then when into their pitch for example on a free credit card. I simply would say "you just lied to me you are selling credit cards". Most at that point just hang up, but some will actually try and convince you that they did not lie. It is my personally feeling that telemarketing should have to have the same permits as a door to door salesperson. After I'd responded, I thought maybe my answers might benefit another hostess "wannabee." So, here they are! 1) Do you ask for the players to send you postage or money? I was gonna just ask for $1.00 to cover stamps and maybe having to use some of my own envies. One person said she usually just asks for the postage. What do you think? Do whatever works for YOU. I like asking for priority postage . . . $3 or a priority mail stamp . . . that way, you know the people are really interested in the swap and they'll probably follow through! It has never mattered to me whether they send money or stamps, and I usually just say that: $3 or a priority mail stamp . . . (If you're outside the USA, write to me for postage info). And then I'll just use whatever the Global Priority Mail rate is . . . 2) Do you usually give the players a DUE date or a POSTMARK date? Again, I don't think it matters! I've usually said it was due to mail by xx/xx. But, you still have to wait a week, send e-mail notes to follow up and check who's dropped out, etc. Remember, peoples circumstances change, so there is a lot of fluctuation in who's participating . . . it's okay for people to drop out if they need to, and you can add people at the last minute, too, if there are people who want to join in. <<3) This is the tough one: How do you actually go about passing out the items to each player? Do you have a system you like to use? >> I haven't found this one tough at all! What I do is prepare the mailing envelopes, and lay them all out in a row (if you have lots of participants, you might have to use the floor, the sofa, your bed, or whatever is a large surface!). I'll put the cards from that person on top of their envelope. And then, I'll pick up the group of cards from the person on the left, and place one card on each of the 5 envelopes to the right of that group. And then, move to the next person's cards, laying their cards out in the same way. People go to great lengths to debate whether you should match the different types of cards, or how you should do it . . . but my theory is that we can all learn from each other, and it really seems to work! I've never had any complaints about my swaps, and everyone seems quite happy! The BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU is HAVE FUN! The whole purpose of a swap is to enjoy it, to be able to share other people's art, and to learn from each other. The hostess works harder at this than any other participants (although, I must say, some of the cards I've received have probably required much more work than hosting a swap!), but she should have fun too!
