E.C. deMars) Subject: Re: RS: Anyone with Pre-School Children These activites would work well with Nursery, pre-school, kindergarten, homeschool, family home evening, etc. These ideas are NOT copyrighted, so feel free to share them. PRE-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES PLUS, part 1 1. String a variety of buttons (large for safety) on yarn. 2. Make a jigsaw puzzle by gluing a large picture on a cardboard. Cut the picture into interesting shapes to make a puzzle. 3. Game of toss. Roll several pair of socks into a ball and fasten them with a rubberband. Line up several pair of shoes and try to throw the ball into them. 4. Provide a large empty cardboard box for a playhouse. Let the children decorate it with crayons, gluing on old scraps of material, or pictures cut out of magazines. 5. Make a bag doll with a small paper bag. Draw a face near the top of the bag and cut the entire area below the neck into strips. Pull several strands out to the sides for arms and tie at the wrist. Tie also at the neck and waist. 6. Whip up some soap powder or flakes in water to a foamy paste. Let the child finger-paint on a small window or a formica table top. 7. Play 'under the broomstick' by crawling under a broom placed on top of two stacks of books. The broom can be lowered by removing books. 8. For playing in water, make a sink puppet from a paper cup. Draw on a face and cut a hole for a mouth. Holding "Mr. Cup" under a running faucet, the water will run out of his mouth. 9. Make a sewing card from a picture glued to cardboard. Poke holes around the figure in the picture and use a piece of old yarn or a shoe lace for the sewing. 10. Make a tambourine by putting a handful of macaroni or beans and a tiny ball between two paper plates and staple them together around the edges. Or punch holes and sew with yarn. 11. Learn to sew by sewing a button on a scrap of fabric. (older child?) 12. Cover a piece of cardboard with felt. Use felt scraps for making magic stick-on pictures. 13. Make baskets by cutting round oatmeal boxes in half. Staple strips of heavy paper on for the handle. 14. Garden indoors with the childre by planting seeds in a container. Keep children interested for months caring for and watching the plants grow. 15. Paint stones of interesting shapes to use as paper weights. 16. Make rhythm instruments out of empty boxes. Place bells, beans, or rocks inside. Make sand blocks by tacking sandpaper to wooden blocks. 17. Make leaf prints by placing leaf, vein side up, on a solid surface. Put paper on top of the leaf, and run a crayon (flat-side) over the paper. 18. Weave paper by cutting slits in a piece of colored construction paper and using strips of other colors for the weaving. 19. Create play-doh by mixing up one cup of flour, one cup of salt, a few drops of food coloring and enough water to make a nice consistency. 20. Begin a picture gallery in the children's room to teach art or to display their creations. Simply suspend some twine along the wall and hang the pictures with clothes pins. 21. Make doll houses out of shoe boxes with cardboard beds and glued on material for drapes. 22. Let children glue scraps of carpet on a piece of canvas, leaving long strips for roads on which to run their small toy cars. 23. Help a child cut designs (with his small scissors) on the flat side of a potato half. He can dip it in food coloring and press on paper for a pretty picture. 24. Let a child help to make his own card games by selecting pictures from a magazine to be glued onto poster paper pieces of uniform size. Then, the children can play matching games, finding similar items such as trucks, trees, animals or just dots, etc. 25. Put a piece of waxed paper around a comb and hum on the instrument for unusual sounds. 26. Create a variety of necklaces by stringing macaroni, colored paper squares, circles, and stars, and pieces of plastic drinking straws. 27. Organize a treasure hunt. 28. Grease a large cake pan and sprinkle with flour. It is ready for finger painting. 29. Give a child a magazine and suggest several things he should look for to cut out --- Such as certain letters C,T,R? or mommies and daddies. 30. Help a child make his own piggy bank. Make it from a salt box, using the spout for a snout, spools for legs, and a colorful pipe cleaner for a tail. Make the eyes and mouth with a magic marker or felt. 31. For a sick child home from school, have him cut words from a magazine and make sentences from them. 32. For a funny game, color eyes, nose, and mouth on a paper plate. Place two flat buttons on the plate and jiggle it. If a button lands on each eye, score ten points; if on one eye, score three points. The score of twenty wins the game. (older child?) 33. Grow an indoor garden from the top of a carrot stub. Place the stub in a shallow dish of pebbles and water. If it is kept in a light place and watered, new shoots will appear in a few days. 34. Children love to cook. Here is a recipe for a no-cook chocolate fudge: 3 oz. softened cream cheese 1/4 tsp. vanilla 2 C. powdered sugar 1/4 C. nuts 1/4 C. cocoa powder dash of salt Mix well and press into a roll and wrap with waxed paper. Chill and then slice off pieces. 35. Put colored paper stepping stones on the floor in a crooked line, some close and some far apart. Let a child walk on them while trying to balance objects on his head. 36. Balloon basketball is lots of fun. Bend the loop of a wire hanger into a circle. Hang it on a doorknob, bending the circle straight out from the door. 37. When busy in the kitchen, tape a large piece of butcher paper to the refrigerator door and give your child some felt tipped pens or crayons to draw with. This will keep a child busy and creative. 38. Non-mentholated shaving soap can be great for fingerpainting. 39. Water play is very entertaining. Let a child stand on a sturdy chair at the sink. Set a pan of water in the sink and give him a funnel, small plastic pitcher, measuring cups and spoons, or bathtub toys to play with. For soap bubbles, give him a plastic drinking straw and a cup filled with a mixture of soap flakes and water. Add a bit of cooking oil and the bubbles will float in the air without breaking. Be sure the child is old enough to blow and not suck!! 40. When stormy weather keeps the children indoors, they can 'draw' on the carpet or floor with pieces of leftover yarn, and they love it. They can make houses, animals, people or room-length missiles. The best reward is the ease in cleaning up. 41. A safe, silent toy is an assortment of colorful sponges, cut down to building block size and kept in a plastic bag. 42. Help the children prepare a Christmas tree for the birds. They can use popcorn, cranberries, and bits of suet. It is educational to watch the birds. 43. Jingle Jangle earrings: Any little girl can make them herself by cutting two pieces of string, four inches in length, and let her tape pennies or buttons or old beads or baubles to the ends of each string. Then just loop the strings over the ears and they make a nice jingly sound as she moves. 44. Have a Camp-IN; a peaceful coexistence while you are entertaining. Let the youngsters take sleeping bags and a packed dinner to a camp-in site where they'll have privacy. They will be contented and the parents can entertain in peace. 45. Have a Christmas card party. Invite a few of the children's friends in for an afternoon of creating personal hand-made greetings. Give them ribbons, gummed decals, cotton, crayons, art paper, maarking pens, scissors and plenty of work space. They do not need much supervision. Top off the afternoon with refreshments. 46. "Talk To me, Mommy!" When one is busy, the young seem to need attention the most. One mother meets this need by tape-recording some of her little daughter's favorite stories, along with some new ones. Then, when the child needs to hear mommy's voice, she can. 47. Helpful elves. Ask the children to count their steps as they do little household chores. The youngest will cheerfully pick up the toys this way and the older one will willingly carry a stack of towels to the closet. The children will know exactly how many steps they have saved their dear mom. 48. While traveling play matching games like dominoes, lotto, snap, old maid, and animal rummy. 49. Screw bolts of various sizes into a large block of wood. Then, give the nuts to a small child to fit onto the right bolts. The block can be painted a bright color. The bolts and nuts 'must' be too large to go in small mouths. 50. Creative blocks. Children can build many interesting things from circles, squares and wedges of polyethylene. - --------- Stay Tuned for part 2 - --------- End forwarded message ---------- I have wept in the night for the shortness of sight that to somebody's need made me blind; But I never have yet felt a tinge of regret for being a little too kind. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Thank-you Bin for really making my day with your wonderful creation! Bin has the cutest little bear (who makes that stamp?) sitting in the grass, holding a bouquet of flowers and blowing dandolions! There are little mice, a snail, & rock piles surrounding the bear! Bin black embossed him, against the most beautiful clouds (how did you do them???) and added more grass at the bottom of the card. The coloring is done using watercolors and is fabulous! She added glitter on the dandolions which is the perfect accent! The inside of the card has the sentiment "Friendship makes the world go 'round embossed in a EP that ranges from greens to purples (what EP is that??) and is accented with bear confetti glued to the card! Bin, this is a great card and I appreciate your sending it to me very much! I look forward to seeing more of your creations!! Thanks bunches! The neutral cardstock grabbag have been selling extremely well, but the biggest comment everyone kept making is I want colors. So how about a 75 sheet Victorian Colors Grabbag for $10.00 plus $3.00 shipping. This grabbag includes: Dark Victorian Blue, Deep Plum Linen, Ash (which is a tan with black flecks throughout) and White Linen. These are all 80 lb cardstock 8 1/2" x 11" sheets. I also still have the Neutral Paper Grabbags which includes: White Embossed Leather, Pebblestone, Oyster Flecks, and Cottonwood. All of these are textured or have flecks or specks of a variety of neutral colors throughout the cardstock. These are not plain ho-hum papers - they are all quite beautiful. All are 80 lb. cardstock except the pebblestone which is 65 lb. The Neutral Grabbag is 75 sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock for $10.00 plus $3.00 shipping. If you purchase 2 or more grabbags the total shipping is just $3.00 even if these are shipped to different addresses in the U.S. For shipping to Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Belgium add $6.95 for 1st grabbag and $3.95 for each additional grabbag. For delivery to Australia and New Zealand add $8.95 shipping and $5.95 for each additional grabbag. If you have questions about delivery to any other country I would be happy to let you know what the cost would be. Either grabbag would make a perfect SS gift and I love making up SS packages. For an additional $5.00 I would be happy to make a March SS package that would have extra goodies. Contact me if you are interested and we will work out what it would contain based on your SS. I accept checks, money orders, Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card. If you have any questions you can e-mail me or feel free to give me a call at 316-364-8744. Someone was critical .... of the list and certain postings in recent days. I read one post where it was indicated that there are too many flames, etc. And I responded ... but it set me off on a line of thinking (and you know *that* can be dangerous....). BTW, I am *not* being critical of the one who posted that critical message ... in fact, I want to thank her because she did make me *think*. I've been on the list for quite a while now (thanks, Feathers!) ... and I figure I've participated in about 40 or 50 swaps, and maybe hosted 10 or 15; I've purchased from about a dozen list vendors, and I'm (heehee) an active participant on this list. I've paid my dues. I got to wondering why it made me so ... so .... cantankerous when someone criticized the list. It actually didn't interfere with my sleep or anything, but I thought about it last night, and again over this morning's coffee. I like the list just fine the way it is. If I spout off at the mouth and someone comes along and tunes me up for it ... fine ... I gotta take as good as I give. If someone else spouts off ... then that's the way of it ... I honestly do not think I've seen anything that I'd term a real "flame" on this list .... and you know, I doubt very much if Janet would allow *real* flames to go on very long. I wish I had kept track of how many card exchanges have resulted because of females being woman enough to say, "OK ... time to put this behind us .... let's get on with it ... what's your snail addy?" *Those* are the women I want to emulate ... because their life skill obviously are well in place. And I cherish every one of those women - they're living examples of how peace can come out of discord. The thing that amazes me continually is that I feel so fiercely protective of the r/s list. My sister will drop in and say something like, "you're on that list again, aren't you?"... and her eyeballs go rolling to the ceiling. See, she doesn't *understand* ... that when I'm going through a particularly rough time of it - my r/s friends are the ones who are encouraging, uplifting. They are the ones who send little notes telling me they're thinking of me, praying for me, wishing me well. I've made many wonderful friends on this list ... and I've been able to share the laughter and tears, the heartaches and the joys with them. I had the privilege of visiting special friends in Georgia last August ... because we met via the list (and if you think "Southern hospitality" is just a phrase .... let me tell you, the love and kindness goes on long, long after you're home again). And, that was literally the trip of a life time for me (and besides, I've almost got the Visa down to a respectable balance now). Many, many times, I've stood over a sinkful of dishes with tears running down my face because of concern for one of my sister-listers, and the hardship she may be going through (Sandy Lemons is on my mind and my heart today - and Linda/Giggles, and Janice Rollins ... ) And I believe that every one of those tears water the prayers that are planted ... because tears are a language God understands. When I want to discuss some point of technical "I-don't-know-how" - whether it's using Amazing Glaze or soot stamping, friendly plastic or rub-on's .... it's the list that I refer to. When I have some great news to share, or when life has kicked my butt .... it's to my list friends that I run. Those of you who have become so special and dear to me - you are women that I honour and cherish. Sometimes when I read your posts, I wish I had "known" you when I was much younger, because you're shining examples of womanhood at it's best ... you often leave me wanting to be something better than I am, you teach me about trust, loyalty, encouragement, sticktoitiveness - and you're honest to the point of telling me not to be so "sensitive" - and that everyone doesn't have to agree with "me".... And some of you even have rare moments of "ladyishness" ... thank goodness those moments are rare. ;) In case anyone is interested, my whole car is a soapbox now. When I was bringing home groceries last night, the top came right off a bottle of dish detergent .... try cleaning *that* up!! Love, Ant Judy H. This week I finally got set up to make my own stamps. I want to thank everyone who has been so wonderful about taking a leap of faith on a new vendor and ordering cardstock grabbags from me. What I would like to offer now is a grabbag of unmounteds of my 1st plate of rubberstamps for $20.00 which includes shipping in the US. Add $1.00 shipping for Canada, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland. Add $2.00 shipping for Australia and New Zealand. Let me know if I left anyone out. There are a total of eighteen images that fill a 9" x 13" sheet. There are six large ones, 4 medium, 4 small, 2 word type and 2 tiny ums. The large stamps are all large enough to fill the front of a card. These include a frog on a lily pad, a bridge with a stream running underneath, a mountain scene, 2 hummingbirds with flowers, a beach scene with seashells, and a large basket of flowers. The medium stamps include an Indian girl feeding a bird, a boy bunny shyly giving a girl bunny flowers, a feather (like a writing quill), and a sign that says Honeybees Welcome. The small stamps are a cactus, a begging dog, a chick on an egg with a feather in his hat and a butterfly. The word stamps are Handstamped By: and Good Job! The tiny stamps are a bird in flight (perfect for adding to the sky of your card) and a postoid size frog on a lily pad. I accept checks, money orders, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. I would love to make a grabbag of ums for you or for your SS. By the way, Creative Images is an angel company. If you have any questions you can e-mail me or feel free to give me a call at 316-364-8744.
