I really appreciate your willingness to be vulnerable, and I admire your courage in the face of possible criticism. I think one of the most difficult challenges in life is to be true to ourselves, especially when our values are inconsistent with the "norm" -- whatever that is. It is so much easier to conform and go along with the crowd -- the most vocal. It is a true test of strength to hold onto our own beliefs when we must stand alone in the face of disapproval and rejection. Everyday in so many different ways, I think more people than not give up parts of themselves to have approval -- or to avoid rejection and/or disapproval. Like your children, I had horrid experiences at the hands of some of God's "handmaidens," i.e., nuns. When I was 7 years old, I remember watching in terror when the nun who taught our class sent one of my classmates down to be whipped with a belt by one of the "Brothers" of our parrish. We could all hear him screaming and crying as he received his punishment. I was equally intimidated when I watched Sister force children to sit inside of the trash can in front of the class when they "misbehaved," or locked my classmates in the closet, or threw our workbooks on the floor when we had the incorrect answers, or screamed at children who broke their pencil lead and needed to sharpen their pencils. She was the worst, but there was a pervasive pattern of reminding us children how sinful we were for having certain thoughts and feelings. It wasn't until I was much older that I learned that human beings don't have control over thoughts and feelings; we only have control over our actions - -- that is, what we do with our thoughts and feelings. I agree with you whole heartedly that "[t]hose who practice the golden rule are the absolute best and share Christ's teaching in ways that preaching can not do. God will judge each of us." While I can appreciate that some truly value their beliefs in God and Christ above all else, *I* still believe that how we treat one another is really what matters. And being the imperfect human being that I am, I don't have much patience for those who don't practice what they preach. Again, I applaud your courage, your openness, your vulnerability. Thank you for sharing yourself with me. You just reminded me that believing in my *self* and being true to my *self* takes courage and inner strength and the willingness to stand alone. twINKlebell - ----------------------------------------------------------- On Tue, 10 Mar 1998 12:11:50 EST Leilani140 writes: >Folks, > >I love each of you, and try hard not to be judgemental. Tina wrote: I'm hosting my first swap, I'm not requiring the participants to send an extra one for me. I think that the hostess already benefits the most, because she sees ALL the cards for the swap, whereas the participants only see their 5 or so. :-) Tina, You make a good point, however it seems to me being a hostess is a LOT of work. I just got my cards from the Rose Swap from Susan Benedict. I have to say I was in AWE of the work she must have done for that swap. I don't know how many players she had, but I know it was a lot. I envisioned her standing in her living room (which must have been at least 30 feet long) and having all those cards laid out. And then trying to divide them so that no one got their own card back and everyone got the right number. Then figuring out all the postage. And probably coughing up some extra for those who forgot to send theirs or who didn't send enough. I guess when all is said and done, I really don't mind making the extra card for the hostess. When I got the cards back from that swap I thought how if I were Susan, I could not have BORN to send out certain ones of those and not keep even one for myself. Dunno---wish there were a good way to do it. Can hostesses make a card for certain ones they absolutely adore so they can keep it, or would that be unfair?
