There is an interesting article in the Feb Reader's Digest (page 48H, by Psychologist Today's Robert Epstein). It's called, "Unleash Your Creativity", and although it's about creativity in general, some of it could be applicable to rubber stamping. 1.) Capturing. "New ideas are like rabbits streaking through your consciousness. If you don't grab them quickly, they're usually gone forever." Epstein tells about Salvador Dali, who'd fall asleep in an armchair with a key in one hand and a plate on the floor. When he'd drift off, the key would fall and the noise would wake him up, and he'd immediately sketch the images he'd been seeing. He suggests carrying something to write on at all times and all places: that way when you see a cute Hallmark card in the grocery store, or something inspires you on the way to work, you can "capture" the idea before it slips away from you. He mentions the "three B's of creativity"-- places where it's easier to relax and let your mind wander: bed, bath, and bus. 2.) Challenging. Epstein says when we find ourselves in a situation where we fail, we become frustrated, and start trying out other behaviors. Example: "Say you start to turn a doorknob that has always turned easily. It won't budge. You turn the knob harder. Then you pull it up or push it down. Maybe you wiggle it. Eventually, you may shove the door with your shoulder or kick it with your foot. You may even shout for help. These efforts--culled from established behaviors--will probably lead to new solutions. Creativity, in short, is not mystical: it's an extension of what you already know." 3.) Broadening. "The more knowledge you have and the more diverse that knowledge is, the greater your potential for creative output." He suggests learning about subjects you know nothing about--and don't want to know about. It just may open the door to new ideas. 4.) Surrounding. Surround yourself with diverse stimuli, and even more important, change those stimuli regularly. "Put unusual items on your desk," he suggests, like "a Mickey Mouse hat, pliers, a candle-- or just rearrange a few things in your room. Diverse and ever-changing stimuli help promote diverse and ever-changing ideas." Also, interacting with others is another form of creative "surrounding". Stamp clubs, card exchanges, SSS, etc are wonderful ways to get ideas from other people. However, spending some time on your own is important, too, as "creativity is always an individual process." Just thought I'd share... Thanks for reading! :) deb ------------------------------ From: DIVAGee@aol.com Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 03:21:56 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: TAN:EBONICS LONG In a message dated 97-02-07 22:35:59 EST, jekyll-hyde@juno.com (Benjamin W Gardner) writes: << Second I went back and pulled up this particular message and it clearly stated that it was "VERY OFFENSIVE" now obviously if you had been reading the papers and or listing to the news you must have had an idea of what "EBONICS" consisted of and quite frankly it's nothing more than a bastardization of the english language and for the State of California to lend credence to this is a joke in of itself. >> first of all this "joke", was NOT what "ebonics" is. this "joke" is what most people think "ebonics" is...malaprops, mis-pronunciation and mis-use this 'joke" was a bastardazation of the english language. if you want to check out some literature that is written in a "black dialect", check out some of langston hughes' "semple stories" or grab a copy of alice walker's award winning book "the colour purple". don't, for god sake, see the movie. look, something needs to be done to reach out to a population of children who are not getting any backup in standard english in their homes. no one is teaching "ebonics" in the classrooms. the teachers need to be able to reach out to these kids and their parents to help them so they don't get left behind. and no one but the schools seems to be willing to do something about it. what do you suggest be done to help these children? ------------------------------ From: Cathy36901@aol.com Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 03:27:41 -0500 (EST) Subject: Happy, Happy Birthday Happy Birthday Ellen....and many, many more. I stamp the stamps that are in the bag on an index card and put the card in the baggie too. They fit perfect in the sterlite containers. For larger ones, I use sandwich size baggies and larger index cards. It's very easy to flip through the baggies and see what you have and you can pull out the cards and photocopy them together to form a catalog of your UMs. It's also very easy to reorganize as your collection grows. This method is also fine for UMs that don't have the cling vinyl too. First was a lovely card with a windmill scene. Beautiful and I'm going to have to study it to see if I can figure out how she did this. Hummmmmmm. The effect is like enamel or porcelin. Really you must tell with instructions. After a week of work the happy package was most welcome as was the heart chocolate candy. Yum. I'll study the little chocolate book for easy recipes. My mom bought me the perfect cook book once - nothing with more than 4 ingrediants. I love to eat but not cook. I've been looking at that leather look stuff in the stores and thinking about trying it then my SSS found a metal quilt of the same brand and type. I've never even seen that before. Looks most interesting. Hope I have time to play with it this weekend while the snow is falling outdoors. I'd been missing the snow. She also included a package of shrink plastic. I've used this before and like it but it does go fast when you use a large stamp and want pieces for a swap card. It will come in handy. AND on top of everything she included two stamps a neat little violet (with a nick like violetnut she has to know I love violets and a beautiful cat face. (My cat just jumped down from my lap. She likes to sit while I go through email delete delete delete. When I start typing and stop rubbing her she leaves.) And now when I do my next shaker cards I won't have to use a razor knife - I now have a great xacto knife. Thats great. Next all wrapped in a little snuggle bag came a beautiful loving bear. Really a beautiful little statue and such a happy bear. AND can you believe I'm still typing - a heart corner type punch. A great punch and one I'd been looking at. I only have a few punches. Finally a beautiful book of wrapping papers which will turn into envelopes or background or explosion card inserts for me at least it will if I can force myself to take any out of this book. I've never seen anything like this book with the beautiful paper in it. That's great. Wow. My SSS really made my week! Month!! WOW!! Thank you so much for everything. Hope your trip goes well!! Don't forget instructions for that great card - please. I'm new to this E-Mail List (and a new vendor as well) and I caught just a few of the Ebonics and Racial and Politically Correct issues that are flying around. Never read the original controversial message -- so may not be on firm ground here. However, here are some things I have come to realize in my many encounters with behaviors from me and toward me that one could term racist, bigotted, anti-semetic or just down right insulting. Perhaps keeping these thoughts in your own mind before you think, speak or act will help you, too, have some really positive experiences with folks who may talk a different talk or walk a different walk. - - The secret to determining whether or not something is insulting is NOT whether YOU would be insulted. It is whether or not you have the depth to realize THEY will be insulted. (i.e., my neighbor doesn't find the word "Redskin" insulting -- but a Native American does. Therefore, the word IS insulting) - - The secret to dealing with people who insult is to realize they do it because it makes them feel superior. This is a weakness of character and a strong trait in human nature. We all have the desire to be better than we are. BEING better is the struggle. PRETENDING to be better is the easy (and often hurtful) way out. I don't always follow these rules. It is my personal struggle to be better and I sometimes fail and others sometimes fail me. But I love a challenge and I hope my learning experience helps anyone else out there struggling to cross the divide.
