Too bad about that "student teacher". As I'm sure you'll attest to, you
learn more by doing than by reading and taking notes.
There are a lot of people that cannot take the interaction that goes on
in an "alive" classroom. Me - I think it's great.
Want to come to my math class?

Whoever has not taken advantage of this offer, SHOULD. They are the
cutest images. Well worth more than the $5. that Barbara charges. I
use them on my envelopes. I love them all, especially the frog and
the dragon. I ended up ordering the 2 plates that were on sale so I
could get the larger dragon and frog. An unsolicited opinion. P

Liza,
Halos are acrylic blocks with recessed grooves that have
industrial
strength Velcro hook tape in the grooves. You can see through the
mount so
you can see exactly where you are stamping. You can also combine
more than
one stamp on a mount instead of stamping several individual images on
a
card.
You put the loop side of the industrial strength Velcro on the
back of
the um. It has a sticky back so it is easy to put on. Then you just
put
the um on the acrylic mount and the Velcro holds it together.
Clear as mud? Try to envision your wood mount as being a clear
acrylic
block that has strips of Velcro hook tape on it. Now think about
instead of
the rubber part being stuck on permanently what if it had Velcro loop
tape
on it so you could take it off and put a different rubber stamp on.
That is
what HALOS does for you. I offer a Trial Kit so you can try HALOS
out and
see exactly how it works. The kit has a 1" x 1" acrylic block and 5
postage
size stamps that already have the loop tape on them. The stamps
include a
dragon holding a heart, a frog on a leaf, a bird, a butterfly and a
scarecrow looking at a sunflower. The kit is $5.00 plus .55 cents
postage.
Just let me know if you are interested.

I LOVE THIS LIST!!! No matter what my questions are, you wonderful people

About HALOS: I have ordered my tester set from Barbara (Couldn't resist at
only $5.00!!)
I hope to be buying UM's left and right now (and saving a TON of cash!!)
About Stampscapes: I have decided that I can no longer be left in the dark
about these things - they are GORGEOUS! I have enrolled in Stampscapes 101 and
hope to be creating these beautiful cards really soon!
And while we are on the subject: What is an OTT light? I am very BAD!! When I
find out there is something that people are enjoying - I MUST HAVE IT! Isn't
that part of the law of acquisition ayway?? :) Any light you can shed on this
issue would be greatly appreciated (sorry, bad pun!!)
Thanks again to you all!! My fiance thinks I am crazy because he can't drag me

abandon all of my new friends on this list?? :)

From: jmorrison@nm-us.campus.mci.net (Jody Morrison)
Subject: Re: RS: TAN: Schools today...long...was Daughters social studies project.
OKAY! Bandwagon time for me!
I've been teaching for 32 years...gulp...and I've won awards, done a huge
amount of consulting, etc. etc. etc....
And I gotta tell you, that student teacher was absolutely correct and the
"regular" teacher dead wrong..
The world has changed drastically; the amount of knowledge doubles every 7
years and even that is shrinking. There is absolutely no way to teach
students all the facts they need to know. So, two things are necessary;
one is agreement about what is BASIC, and the second is teaching students
how to find out what they don't, at the moment, know. So, for example,
learning how to do research on the web is critical...and, frankly, who
cares WHAT that research concerns, so long as students learn how to do it.
Never before have students had such distractions to the learning process.
The number of students who live in poverty, come to school without adaquate
breakfast, live in families with drug/alcohol/family violence is truly
staggering. TV, computers, electronic games, etc. take attention from
active learning and replace it with passive observance. Many students
simply do not know HOW to learn anymore....
Yet families and, yes, older teachers, forget how much the world has
changed. They think, "Hey, it was good enough for me...should be good
enough for them..." WRONG!!!
It is absolutely critical to involve kids in learning that material deemed
essential. Get 'em stirred up; get 'em involved. Every teacher worth
their salt knows the difference between an active, involved, noisy
classroom and one in which the noise indicates a total lack of involvement.
If they don't know the difference, they should be placed on administrative
leave and sent to visit in classrooms where the teachers DO know the
difference.
Yes we've got to inculcate some of the older values: obedience, respect,
discipline, etc. But those come when teachers first get kids involved and
enjoying both the class and the teacher.
I have students memorize poems and they have to say them in front of the
whole class. But I sure don't do that first thing in the school year.
I demand that students NOT talk at innappropriate times, but I sure provide
LOTS of time for discussions, work in pairs, triads, small groups.
As students come to trust me, they DO do the "hard", old fashioned stuff.
They do memorize; they do learn (and use) at least 2 new vocabulary words
per week. But they also create board games as part of their final exam in
the prejudice unit, and they do make their own books, and bind them during
the poetry unit. And they do hold a coffee house where they cook the
desserts, and choose the poetry to be read, and read it in front of 250-300
people.
If we truly want students to both learn basics and be critical thinkers,
capable of applying what they know to new situations, we had best observe
what works in teaching todays youth...and use it!
Sorry for the rant...but this stuff is really important to me...
Hugs,
Jody

Subject: RS: Rcvd. Embossed Shelf Liner/3-D Vinyl swap
Received cards from the Embossed Shelf Liner/3-D Vinyl swaps:
=46rom Debbie Miller - pink cs with a piece of vellum with all edges
gold-embossed, layered with pink mulberry paper and a heart of
gold-embossed shelf liner. A gold bow fastens the vellum to the cs
through small heart punched holes - a very pretty card, Debbie.
=46rom Sandra Hampson - an Indian motif background layered with a strip
of gold and blue embossed shelf liner, and an Indian on horseback cut
out and layered on that. The card edges are deckle cut and are
embossed with the same blue and gold ep - a very striking card,
Sandra.
=46rom Charley Faust - a beautiful bookmark - green glossy cs with Hero
Arts violet border stamped on 3-D vinyl and colored in - How? I need
to know how you did this, it's so beautiful.
=46rom Violetnut - white cs stamped all over with a puzzle piece stamp,
with 3-D vinyl layered on top, and with 3 real puzzle pieces glued on
that. Inside message: *Scrute the Inscrutable. Eff the Ineffable* I
have to have that stamp, Violet. Where did you get it? I love this
card.
=46rom Elizabeth Ruuska - blue cs with one large fish stamped and
colored and 3 small fish; then a layer of 3-D vinyl with a large lily
pad stamped, colored, cut out, and glued to the top of the vinyl. How
did you do the lily pad, Elizabeth? It looks great! The 3-D look is
awesome. This is yet another truly beautiful card.
Thanks to Debbie Coller for hosting this swap, and thanks for the
Easter stickers.
Best Wishes,
Anita

Subject: RS: Re: Who sells those HALOS thingumbob doohickies?
Diane,
I do. Here is what I have:
I have a starter set for $20.00 plus $3.00 shipping. It comes with 4
blocks and 1/4 yard of loop tape and the sizes of the blocks are:
l.5" x l.5"
2" x 3.5"
2" x 6"
3.5" x 4.5"
A pair of KAI scissors for trimming the rubber and loop tape is great.
They cut right through the rubber and loop tape. They are actually for
trimming Bonsai trees so they are very sharp and stay that way. They are
$15.00.
Extra loop tape is $5.99 per yard. The tape is 4" wide and 9" long.
Don't try using regular Velcro because it isn't strong enough to stamp with.
If you want individual blocks I have those also. Here is a price list
of what I have:
1" x 1" $1.50
1 1/2" x 1 1/2" $2.50
2" x 2" $3.00
2" x 3 1/2" $4.00
3" x 3" $4.25
2" x 5 3/4" $5.50
4 1/2" x 6 1/2" $9.50
3" x 8 1/2" $9.50
You need a mount that is slightly larger than your stamp. If you get
the starter set, 1 yard of tape and the KAI scissors all at once then the
total is $40.99 and shipping is free. Otherwise I charge actual shipping.
Just let me know if I can ever help you with any of this. I do accept Visa,
MasterCard, Discover, checks and money orders.

I'm glad you liked the House Mouse card. I used crystal lacquer on the
pepper. If you feel the mice, you'll notice I used a touch of liquid
applique on them, as well.
Hugs,
Betsy

Subject: Re: RS: TAN: Daughters social studies project.
This reminds me of a student teacher that worked with me a few years ago.
She complained to her supervisor that I didn't teach the children. When we
asked what she meant, she said I rarely stood in front of the class and gave
them information. I had a hard time getting her to understand the importance
of being a facilitator and allowing the children to make discoveries for
themselves. Of course she had just come from working with a teacher in
another school that had her whole year planned day by day, and didn't vary
from it, from one year to the next!

Subject: RS: TAN - What does this mean?
I have that happen ALL the time. Just means that your computer has got
it's wires crossed(usually happens to me when I try to do too many
operations at once! I get impatient!!!).. or maybe it is something that
the computer can't quite do....I have yet to be cited or arrested. It
shuts itself down so that it can get it's gadgets all straightened out, if
you go back into the program everything is straightened out.
This is a totally untechnical explanation!
