Most mailorder businesses charge you at least double what the actual shipping is. If you order from a JCPenny's or LLBean catalog you will not pay actual shipping you will pay "shipping and handling" where the handling is the to cover the cost of getting the item you want shipped in a mailable package, create an address label, and get it to the postoffice. The handling cost for small orders is usually more than the company makes on the sale. Your sticker example is a very good one, on the $4.00 worth of stickers the list vendor it lucky has a mark up of $2.00, but more likely it is less than $1.50. From that markup they have to pay the cost of their time to handle the order--usually at least 3 emails, and print a label and pick the item from inventory and put it in the package. They also have to make a trip to the po. After their time, there is also the cost of the label, the cost of the package (and I had someone complain a while back about re-using an old package), and either the cost for insurance or a reserve for lost orders. They also have to cover the cost of inventory that becomes on sellable for any reason, and the cost of their internet contection and home page. If they take credit cards they also have to usually pay a per transaction fee and a percent to the credit card company and the cost of the equipment. After listing all this, at this point I am wondering how any of us do stay in business. I know that if I discount even 10 percent I don't make min wages on my unmounteds. But I love the stamping, I love the templates and I love making cdroms, so I will keep trying to find ways to make them with less labor, and try and hold the prices. I would love to do this full time just like almost every other person on the list would like to be able to have their own full time business. I am luck because I have a very successful other business and a retirement income to cover my negetive profit from this business for the 2 or 3 years is it going to take to make it profitable. I have had the opportitiy to work on a couple of wonderful projects on this list that i could not have done if I were just pushing my stuff to the retail stores. I would like to thank all of my customers for understanding that I have to make a profit, and for reading this far, wonder if I should have moved this paragraph to the top. It's by *no* means complete, I'm sure there are lots of other wonderful companies/people out there--but these are the ones people wrote me about. And so, not in any special order: (all paper is 8.5" x 11" unless otherwise noted and prices do not include shipping) 1) Ellen Gordon, "Evo" evo@pobox.com has matte white----4 sheets/$1.00 2) Addicted to Rubber (Ellen Gengler), lngnglr@interserv.com (206-241-6064) has mientes sticker paper, very nice, high quality, no prices given 3) Impression Obsession (Mitra Friant) mfriant@widowmaker.com matte paper 10 sheets/$2.50, glossy paper 10 sheets/$3.50 4) Ragged Edge Press (Joel Cohen) (212-962-4488) http://www.nybn.com/ragged-edge don't know e-mail addy. This is a real print shop with a sideline of rubberstamps and a big selection of sticker papers, including glossy (20 sheets/$7.50), also a variety of semi-gloss, plain, orange, chartreuse and an incredible "tie-dye" high gloss that is marvelous. Most run in the 20 or 25 sheets for $7 or $7.50 range. He also has dry gum and wet gum sticker sheets (lick & stick). A wonderful sample package of odds & ends is $5.00. The last places I bought sticker paper was Toad Hall/Rubber Anarchy and Herbarium. They both had great variety, but both have undergone lots of changes in their companies lately & I don't know what they are offering or whether they offer retail. Does anyone know? They were two of my favorite companies...... Again, a public thank-you to all who e-mailed me with info! It turned out cute, so I thought I'd share the idea. I found some background paper with different types of tools on it, but it would work better with some "stamped" tools (I just don't have any). I put a larger image of a plane in the middle, layered on a piece of coordinating paper, so it would show. Inside I wrote I 'saw' that it was almost time, and knew I better 'bolt' for the Post Office. On the way I saw a 'washer' on sale, and knew I would have to 'clamp' down on spending so I could buy it. I remembered the trip to the Post Office in time, so a 'wrench' was NOT throwm in my plans. I don't want you to have a 'plane' day, but a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Even my dh thought it was cute, and not stupid, so I felt pretty good. My family has there own things they say about my card. My daughter says "It's cuuuuute", my 13 yr old son says "It's neat", and my 14 yr old son says "It's funny (high praise from him). Hope someone can use this idea sometime. I love the rust = colored confetti cardstock and ordered a bunch of that. Also received the = Overstock Sampler pack which has lots of beautiful colors. Got my Stampscapes Duck from Darlene Sather to finish up my Stampscapes = class from Tyra. BTW, if you haven't participated in Angelhrt's online = class, this is a super class and she is an awesome instructor. I've = learned so much from it and am very pleased I took the plunge. Received both my Ann-ticipations and US Artquest orders from Betsy the = Rubber Chicken Lady. Yummy stuff indeed. One of the things I ordered was = the Special Effects for Mixed Media video for my sister; her birthday is = 4/20. I've got lots of stamping videos, but IMO this one is the best. = Lots of neat ideas. If you haven't seen it, you really should. Then you = will want it and can order it from Betsy or one of our other awesome = vendors. I'm telling you, it's good stuff!!! Thanks ladies for all the goodies. It is a thin vellum with different themes on it in white, like leaves and shells and baby booties/pacifiers.... on different sheets of course... I picked it up at StampaDoodle in Bellingham, WA. The white actually resists color if you brayer it. They had an envelope done this way and it was very elegant. Anybody have other ideas for uses for it.... I don't have a brayer yet. It's too pretty to experiment with and ruin... Kathy On Mon, 6 Apr 1998, Terri Bear wrote: > Stamping friends, > > I'm in the mood for hosting some swaps -- Vellum is my favorite stamping > paper..
