At the very least, if it's a recognized breed there are rescues that will take the dog and place him or her well. In some towns, there are rescues for mixed breeds also, although these are a little hard to find. Do let me know what sort of dog you are trying to place and what state and town you are in, and near what large city and perhaps I can locate someone there for you. Have you tried a net search under dog rescue? There are a number of sites for these. Also, in many places there are no-kill shelters. These may take your mixed breed. Maybe one of your radio or tv stations has an "action line" telephone number you can call to find one of these rescues too. Of course the best thing would be to wait until you can find an apartment that will let you bring the dog-- that goes almost without saying. I know someone who needs a new apartment badly-- she has fibromyalgia and doesn't sleep well as it is, and the neighbors are very noisy all night long above her. In addition, her apt. is very cramped, (a married couple and two pets in a room and a half) yet, she is willing to wait until she finds one that will let her bring her two pet ferrets (if you think finding a dog friendly apt is hard, you should try ferrets!). When we take an animal into our home, my belief is, we are then as responsible for it as we are for our own children, after all, it's a helpless animal, and one who has given us much, including loyalty. They shouldn't be abandoned even to a good situation if there is any way at all to keep them with you. Do let me know if I can help you with research in find a good place for your pet if you just won't or can't keep him or her yourself. I have seen quite a few postings of people in distress due to the passing of a loved one. How many people put obituaries in the local newspaper which lists when and where the services are going to be held? You think that when you are in such a terrible position, nothing else could ever go wrong. But it can. It happened to my BIL's family. His Dad passed away about five years ago. They put his obit in the local newspaper. The family went to the evening services, the neighbours went as well as they had been neighbours for over 20 years. My BIL took his Mom home and guess what -- they'd been robbed. And they didn't take the TV and VCR and the stuff we would normally assume would be taken in a random robbery. They took the man's jewlery, the woman's jewlery, the things that mattered most now that he was gone. I'm not saying that you shouldn't put obits in the newspaper because I think it's good to celebrate publically the life of someone you love. But, you should always have someone looking after the house during that time. Someone who didn't know the deceased very well. A neighbour who wasn't going to the funeral anyways. Some house sitting businesses (they do it while you are out of town) will watch the house for you while you are at the funeral (my BIL started a business like this about two years after this incident but unfortunately, they didn't get a lot of funeral business...mostly vacations). This can also happen with weddings. In my home town (where the above incident happened) here in Canada has an announcements page in the paper every Saturday which lists births, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations etc. If you put your upcoming nuptials in there, anyone who can pick up the paper and can read it knows you won't be home that day. We really do have to be careful! nancy Shannon Green wrote: > > >I can't even begin to count the number of people who have posted > >that they are leaving town for a weekend or longer, letting anyone listening > >in know that their house will be sitting empty. > > Every time I see a post from someone saying they're going out of town for > the weekend or going on vacation I just cringe. Word play is when you take a cliche', phrase or saying and stamp the literal meaning of the words. For example: "My cup of tea" could be stamped as: "My cup of" stamped or written at the top of the card with a Teacup below that has a letter "T" in it. "Coffee break" could be stamped as: a cup of coffee with the image broke into a couple of pieces. This is a really fun way to be creative in your stamping. The postmark would be for June 1st. He's not a small man.. Great!! And for those of you who don't have pet or house sitters, here's an idea I saw awhile back-- I believe it was written by someone who is a former burgler: Keep (at all times) a small sign on your door where anyone ringing the bell can see it-- it should read: No sales or solicitations. We answer the door only for people we know. Thieves will often go from door to door, ringing or knocking, and when there is no answer, they break in. With a sign like this on your door, they have no assurance that the occupants are out-- no way to tell-- you could be peering through the blinds and have decided that since you don't know them, they are selling or collecting for something and you just won't come to the door . . . they are almost surely going to move on to an easier target. But, you have to have this on your door at all times, not just when you are leaving for vacation or something. And you have to then *do* it-- not answer if you don't know someone. (a good idea in any case these days) Just a note-- There was a guy in the news recently, who used to break in places, that says corner houses are the most suseptible to burglary because it makes for an easier get-a-way. Can't remember when I've laughed so hard and so long with such great people...thank you to all who attended for your humor! Now, before I give my "review" of the day, I must clarify one thing that has been mentioned several times. Indeed, Barry Percy was on his knees in front of me, groveling and hugging my butt. What led up to that moment is not important. What *is* important is: It was wonderful to know that I haven't lost my touch!!!!! rofl!!!!! And that's all I'm gonna say on dat subject!!! hehehehe So, we all joined up at Stamp On It in Essex, and hugged and greeted, and cruised the aisles for a few minutes, planning our return later in the day, then piled into cars and headed over to House Mouse. I started hyperventilating before even getting in the door!!! Once inside, WHAM--greeted with racks and tables loaded with stamps--and all of the new ones were there, too!!!!! The "one" I wanted was one of the last ones I added to the pile of *eight* stamps!!! YES, eight stamps--but there was a really good reason for so many! As we were starting to check out, Barry told us he would sell to us at the new catalog deal of "Buy 3, get 1 Free" ... Sooooo what was I supposed to do??!!! I headed back to the rack, of course! And then there were the mugs, and then there were the coloring pictures--as Wendy says: "I can't draw, but I color good!!" ... So Barry went and got a box to start packing my treasures...Lynda Barnwell got a surprised look on her face when he handed me the box, saying she thought he was packing up a shipping order for a store!!! lol!!!! And when Ellen joined us, with her quiet, charming presence, and all of us so contained and self-possessed in that store...she was absolutely delightful!! I didn't know until yesterday that she actually has a little mouse who models for her :) ... and she autographed our calendars--yes, we got goodie bags, too!!!! And it was just fantastic!! On to Al's French Fries--a landmark in the Burlington, Vermont, area...unfortunately, the Great TP Caper may have some residual effect in Wendy being unable to frequent the diner anytime in the future...but that's another story!! Back to Stamp On It, where Gwen (Wendy's mother) smiled at us indulgently as we shopped and piled, and read catalogs and ate cake (yummmmm), and shopped some more...until sometime around 5 she began reading the classified ads, seeking a new shop and home where she would be safe from her daughter and her daughter's friends in the future. We're sorry, Wendy...but we'll try and find her for you!!! lol!!! It was just an absolutely wonderful day! oooooo that alphabet!!! Gee, I wish I'd seen that catalog when I was about to be finished with my last husband....some interesting ideas came to mind!!! hehehe ... I *did* offer to design one for Petie, but he had to agree to pose in all the letter positions while I drew them...I don't understand why he stayed so far away from me for the rest of the day!!! Hey, I was just being helpful!!!! Our final stop was at Wendy's house to visit with Tigger, the teeniest, tiniest kitty!!! She does think she's a "big girl" but she's not much bigger than a flea, and hops all over! Too, too cute!! We tried to take her home with us, but Wendy was too quick!! (sheeeesh she doesn't share well..) Then of course the drive back to New Hampshire, where I was threatened all the way home by Giggles and Peter Pan that they were a) not dropping me off; b) dropping me off but not giving me my House Mouse box; c) taking me to their house until I relinquished my House Mouse box...well, you get the picture! And many of you know just how mean they can *really* be!! So, here I was, tired and terrified for two hours! What a relief to be home!! And, yes, I inventoried as soon as I got home!! whew! What a day!! Linda **Please note my new email address!** This message was from "Linda Farrell" - -- The rubberstampers mailing list is proudly sponsored by the Dueling Modems Arts & Crafts Forum. We had a darling Siberian Husky, Shiloah. We got her while we were in college and had her for 4 years or so. When we had to move to Wenatchee, we could not, anywhere, find a place that we could live in (safely) that would allow a dog. So we called our vet and asked them to keep an eye/ear open and we finally found a family with a big fenced yard and kids for her to play with. We didn't go back to visit her, although they invited us too, it would have been heartwrenching. We miss her (and we hope she misses us, but I doubt it) and someday, when we are settled in a house of our own, we will have dogs again...but the reality of it is that, as a responsible pet owner, I did my best to find her a new home, and found her a good one. I'm not going to feel guilty because I had to get rid of her...she is a pet, an animal, not a person. Sure, we could have found a place on the other side of town, with security bars on the windows and kept her, but we would not have been in a safe neighborhood. I don't know what we would have done if we hadn't found her a good home, and I don't want to go down that road... I hope something works out for you...maybe if you make sure that your renter's insurance covers any damage the dog may do to the house and show your landlord-to-be that you are responsible for your dog it may help change his mind. Last month's was an applique or quilt pattern. I like the blackwork one this month because there's an instruction page on how to do this so it is reversible. (My backs always are a mess, this is cool stuff to try to make the back as pretty as the front.) Anyways, check it out.
