I did a class this summer at Sun Prairie and made more than I spent (just barely!). I am going to do a different class in Lake Geneva and hope I do as well. It doesn't have to be a difficult class--just something you know how to do well and feel comfortable telling others about. Look at what's being offered and what you already know how to do. It is also a lot of fun. Depending on what you teach, it can involve a lot of preparation or a little. I recommend including printed instructions and illustrations for student to take home and for a little extra $$ make up some take-home "kits" which have most of the needed supplies (paper, embellishments, anything "odd" that a stamper might not have at home), instructions and a completed sample. I sold my kits for the same price as the class and some people bought them for friends who could not make the convention, or even for themselves because they liked my sample. Just start early by contacting the convention organizers. "If you're grouchy, irritable, or just plain mean, there will be a $10 charge for putting up with you." To clean, use a Q-tip wet with rubbing alcohol and wipe the crud off to the side and out of the hole. Blow in it occasionally to get the rest of the stuff out. I always clean my mouse that way and I did all of them in the computer lab when I taught computers. A friend fowarded the message below, adding her own note which I've included at the end. - ------------------------------ Vonnegut? Schmich? Who can tell in cyberspace by Mary Schmich Web-posted: Saturday, August 2, 1997 I am Kurt Vonnegut. Oh, Kurt Vonnegut may appear to be a brilliant, revered male novelist. I may appear to be a mediocre and virtually unknown female newspaper columnist. We may appear to have nothing in common but unruly hair. But out in the lawless swamp of cyberspace, Mr. Vonnegut and I are one. Out there, where any snake can masquerade as king, both of us are the author of a graduation speech that began with the immortal words, "Wear sunscreen." I was alerted to my bond with Mr. Vonnegut Friday morning by several callers and e-mail correspondents who reported that the sunscreen speech was rocketing through the cyberswamp, from L.A. to New York to Scotland, in a vast e-mail chain letter. Friends had e-mailed it to friends, who e-mailed it to more friends, all of whom were told it was the commencement address given to the graduating class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The speaker was allegedly Kurt Vonnegut. Imagine Mr. Vonnegut's surprise. He was not, and never has been, MIT's commencement speaker. Imagine my surprise. I recall composing that little speech one Friday afternoon while high on coffee and M&M's. It appeared in this space on June 1. It included such deep thoughts as "Sing," "Floss," and "Don't mess too much with your hair." It was not art. But out in the cyberswamp, truth is whatever you say it is, and my simple thoughts on floss and sunscreen were being passed around as Kurt Vonnegut's eternal wisdom. Poor man. He didn't deserve to have his reputation sullied in this way. So I called a Los Angles book reviewer, with whom I'd never spoken, hoping he could help me find Mr. Vonnegut. "You mean that thing about sunscreen?" he said when I explained the situation. "I got that. It was brilliant. He didn't write that?" He didn't know how to find Mr. Vonnegut. I tried MIT. "You wrote that?" said Lisa Damtoft in the news office. She said MIT had received many calls and e-mails on this year's "sunscreen" commencement speech. But not everyone was sure: Who had been the speaker? The speaker on June 6 was Kofi Annan, secretary general of the United Nations, who did not, as Mr. Vonnegut and I did in our speech, urge his graduates to "dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room." He didn't mention sunscreen. As I continued my quest for Mr. Vonnegut -- his publisher had taken the afternoon off, his agent didn't answer -- reports of his "sunscreen" speech kept pouring in. A friend called from Michigan. He'd read my column several weeks ago. Friday morning he received it again -- in an e-mail from his boss. This time it was not an ordinary column by an ordinary columnist. Now it was literature by Kurt Vonnegut. Fortunately, not everyone who read the speech believed it was Mr. Vonnegut's. "The voice wasn't quite his," sniffed one doubting contributor to a Vonnegut chat group on the Internet. "It was slightly off -- a little too jokey, a little too cute . . . a little too `Seinfeld.' " Hoping to find the source of this prank, I traced one e-mail backward from its last recipient, Hank De Zutter, a professor at Malcolm X College in Chicago. He received it from a relative in New York, who received it from a film producer in New York, who received it from a TV producer in Denver, who received it from his sister, who received it... I realized the pursuit of culprit zero would be endless. I gave up. I did, however, finally track down Mr. Vonnegut. He picked up his own phone. He'd heard about the sunscreen speech from his lawyer, from friends, from a women's magazine that wanted to reprint it until he denied he wrote it. "It was very witty, but it wasn't my wittiness," he generously said. Reams could be written on the lessons in this episode. Space confines me to two. One: I should put Kurt Vonnegut's name on my column. It would be like sticking a Calvin Klein label on a pair of K-Mart jeans. Two: Cyberspace, in Mr. Vonnegut's word, is "spooky." - ------------------------------ Kristin's comment, in part... "Well, here's the test of the day: Is that MIT speech that Kurt gave less meaningful if you know that it wasn't Kurt and it wasn't a speech given at MIT?" Several others have asked to be kept informed, so I will also send to the list. Alex and Oscar (4 month old blind beagle/basset males) are doing very well. We've had them about 3 weeks now. They are pretty fearless. Some of the info I got from owners of blind dogs was that they might never learn to do stairs and that you should "mark" your furniture with strong perfume so they don't run into it. Alex and Oscar are just fine with the 5 steps to our backyard--even the first time they did not hesitate. I went in front of them and said, "step" for each step and they went down with me--same for coming up. Did that a few times and now they know exactly where the steps are and need no cueing. Our backyard is very wild and wooded, but they run around out there just like sighted dogs. One requirement the Humane Society had was that the new owners have another dog already and we do--our golden retriever, Maggie. The reason for this is so the pups can follow her (and her scent) and learn the ropes. I think this is why they can navigate the trees/bushes so easily--Maggie has been there before! They also are not afraid to jump on or off furniture (couches, beds). Maybe it is just these 2 particular pups or maybe it is because they have been blind since birth and don't know any different. We never did mark our furniture--found out immediately it was not necessary. They took their time sniffing and locating everything before they started running around in the house. If something new is put on the floor (laundry basket, etc.) they might run into it, but just once. Then they know where it is. It would be cruel to rearrange the furniture all the time, but I hardly ever do that anyway. As far as behaviors--they are puppies and I don't see anything different about them than other puppies--they came to us mostly housetrained (VBG), altho' we did not know that, since they were abandoned. One thing I noticed today is that one of the pups (Oscar) should not be touched when he is asleep. Alex has been pouncing on him and then they play-fight, but when I stroked him when he was asleep today, he growled and started to snap before he woke up. I guess I'd be cautious around young children (altho' at his age, Oscar isn't likely to do any real damage). I just chanced upon them at the Humane Society--I stopped off with a donation of cat toys that I make and just took a walk-through. Not even looking for a dog, really, but they grabbed my heart and by time I had met them and read their story, I was a goner. They are extremely fast learners. You should have seen them the first time I took them to the vet for their shots. I had them on a leash that hooked to both their collars, lifted them into the back of the station wagon (we have a doggie gate) with no trouble--but when I tried to get them back in after the dr. visit--they had figured out where the ground was and were trying to jump out--I'd get one in and he'd try to get out while I was getting the other one in! And I still had my wrist in the splint from my surgery, so I was doing this one-handed. Eventually, using my body to block one, I got the other in and closed the trunk! I want to take at least one of them (Oscar) to puppy school because he isn't responding as well to simple commands as Alex (come, off, etc.) Also, the HS said if we're going to train them, to do it separately, since they are more dependent on each other and may not listen as well if they are together. DH took Oscar to the vet ophthalmologist while I was in Tucson last week (Alex goes tomorrow with me) and the vet said he might see shadows, but not much else. He was surprised at how well he got around in the office--strange surroundings. He gave us eye drops to use every other day that dilate the pupils to let in maximum light. We are supposed to see if he sees better with the drops. DH was waiting for me to get home to start. I don't know how we will be able to tell, because around here, they function as sighted. But we'll see. No surgery unless they develop bleeding in the eyes. I recommend adopting blind animals if you have a sighted one already and are ready for the extra vet care in the event surgery is necessary. Check out the pet boards on the net or other services--aol has one--for people who have had experience. I met many people already and have been given a lot of tips. I would suggest calling the humane society and indicating your interest in adopting a disabled (be specific) pet and I am sure they will call you when one becomes available. Also, if you have a vet school, they might have some ideas. Also, breeders and kennel clubs--seems more purebreds are being born with genetic defects. Good luck to your friend. PS We also adopted a 13 1/2 year old deaf cat a couple of years ago--she was a great pet--we only had to be *extremely* vigilant at the door, since she could not hear us call her if she got out and could not hear traffic. Once, a nurse's aide who was here taking care of my grandma let the cat out and when I got home I had to scour the neighborhood (remember the wooded lot???) just looking for her--then had to chase her on foot thru muddy hills to catch her attention. Luckily she was only a couple houses away, had not crossed the street and was safely returned home! I also recommend adopting older animals--much less likely to get a new home. Statistics from our HS say that 80% of dogs/pups get adopted, but only 20% of the cats/kittens. And the older or special needs ones are less likely to find a happy ending. And, of course---SPAY and NEUTER! I'll do another update if there is continued interest. "If you're grouchy, irritable, or just plain mean, there will be a $10 charge for putting up with you."
