You posted it just in time for the cootie swap. It's great. Carol In a message dated 97-09-24 13:13:52 EDT, marmstr@wvnvm.wvnet.edu writes: << and i found it right here onthe internet! Cooties Special Note: The information below has not undergone the usual medical review, and therefore may contain factual error. The Editors welcome reader comments, especially from those who've experienced cooties themselves. Signs and Symptoms These are variable, but mostly consist of children ages 6-9 running around brushing hemselves off and yelling "Ooooh...cooties, yuck! Get them off me!" Most commonly, transmission is from little girls to little boys, though it does happen vice versa. Apparently, transmission is less common between members of the same gender. Transmission occurs either inadvertently (by means of a brushing up against the other) or by means of a stereotypic ritual. Here a little girl (or boy) approaches a member of the opposite gender and almost touches them with a single outstretched digit (usually the index finger), often with a vocalization of some sort. The child who is "almost" touched jumps back slightly with a horrified look. The first child then moves in closer for a successful conclusion to this "approach-avoidance" ritual. A variation occurs at about the time of adrenarche and early puberty, when the modifying effects of various hormones "kick-in." From this point, the look of horror disappears from the contacted individual, who does not seem to avoid contact with the same diligence as in younger individuals. This response is one of the first indicators of approaching puberty. There seems to be little seasonal variance, except for a slight increase in warmer months. The specific causative organism has not been identified, though included is an artist's rendition of its theoretical morphology. Prevention There is no known prevention at this time. Isolation imposed by "going to your room" has little lasting effect. The use of an imaginary "anti-cootie" spray, and demarcating border lines between siblings (particularly in the back seat of the car) may have temporary benefit. Reinfection may be preventable. [See: Duration below for further comment.] Incubation One of the shortest known incubations: the time between the touching by the little girl (or boy) to the horrified reaction of the other can be measured in nanoseconds. Duration The behavioral aspects of cooties usually lasts only until the condition can be transmitted either to another or back to the original carrier. Calling "No backsies!" may prevent einfection in some cases. Contagiousness Highly, with an infectivity rate of close to 100%. Commonly, an epidemic form may be seen, particularly at a playground, school yard, or during a birthday party. Home Treatment "Cootie-catchers" have been used, but no double-blinded clinical studies of their effectiveness have been performed to our knowledge. Isolation is effective but largely impractical due to the prolonged nature of susceptibility (approximately five years). Tincture of time (and a stern look from an adult) is the only known palliative. Professional Treatment None for patients. Parents may be advised to take a deep breath and have a nice, quiet cup of tea or other soothing beverage. As mentioned, the advent of puberty ameliorates this condition, but this positive effect is likely to be tempered with the advent of other age-related disorders. My first swap had over forty people. I think that the time commitment describing all those cards would have made it a chore rather than a joy. It normally takes me a half hour to forty-five minutes to just describe ones I have received in a swap. My other swaps have been smaller, but I still believe that it should not be the duty of the hostess. She (sorry, male stampers) is already responsible for preparing the swap, communicating about the swap, making the matches, correcting any postage problems or other shortages, and possibly making swap remembrances (very optional). I, too, wish that more swap cards were described by the participants, but have no easy answers. Just Mah's .02....
