Why? Probably because "chachi" is Korean for "penis". When Braniff Airlines translated a slogan touting its upholstery, "Fly in Leather," it came out in Spanish as "Fly Naked." Coors put its slogan, "Turn It Loose," into Spanish, where it was read as "Suffer From Diarrhea." Chicken magnate Frank Perdue's line, "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken," sounds much more interesting in Spanish: "It takes a sexually stimulated man to make a chicken affectionate." When Vicks first introduced its cough drops on the German market, they were chagrined to learn that the German pronunciation of "v" is "f", which in German is the guttural equivalent of "sexual penetration." Not to be outdone, Puffs tissues tried later to introduce its product, only to learn that "Puff" in German is a colloquial term for a whorehouse. The Chevy Nova never sold well in Spanish speaking countries. "No va" means "It does not go" in Spanish. When Pepsi started marketing its products in China a few years back, they translated their slogan, "Pepsi Brings You Back to Life" pretty literally. The slogan in Chinese really meant, "Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave." Then when Coca-Cola first shipped to China, they named the product something that when pronounced sounded like "Coca-Cola." The only problem was that the characters used meant "Bite The Wax Tadpole." They later changed to a set of characters that mean "Happiness In The Mouth." A hair products company, Clairol, introduced the "Mist Stick", a curling iron, into Germany only to find out that mist is slang for manure. Not too many people had use for the manure stick. When Gerber first started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as here in the USA - with the cute baby on the label. Later they found out that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what actually is inside the container since most people can not read. MENSA, the organization for the extremely intelligent (and from time to time the extremely arrogant), is the Spanish word for stupid (gender female). Bacardi concocted a fruity drink with the name "Pavian" to suggest French chic... but "pavian" means "baboon" in German. Parker Pens translated the slogan for its ink, "Avoid Embarrassment - Use Quink" into Spanish as "Evite Embarazos - Use Quink"... which also means, "Avoid Pregnancy - Use Quink." Jolly Green Giant translated into Arabic means "Intimidating Green Ogre." In Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan "Finger-lickin' good" came out as "Eat your fingers off." An American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish market which promoted the Pope's visit. Instead of the desired "I Saw the Pope" in Spanish, the shirts proclaimed "I Saw the Potato." Hunt-Wesson introduced its Big John products in French Canada as Gros Jos before finding out that the phrase, in slang, means "big breasts." In this case, however, the name problem did not have a noticeable effect on sales. In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water. In an effort to boost orange juice sales in predominantly continental breakfast eating England, a campaign was devised to extol the drink's eye-opening, pick-me-up qualities. Hence the slogan, "Orange juice. It gets your pecker up." Debi-Ellen I didn't say or even mean to imply that you were doing something wrong. I would just like to have everyone who thinks this list they are asking for is going to help protect them without doing anything on their own, have a problem. I for one know that I don't have perfect service, but I try very hard, and the people who have ordered and had a problem, know that I do fix the problems. Over 95% of my business is mail order, and everything goes out priority mail, I watch the list very carefully trying and figure out when to wait to ship something and when I'll take the risk to ship before I have the check. I have hundreds of dollars tied up in unpaid orders, but only one that is over a month old. It is a real risk, to mail an order before being paid, but then the check may be bad, so how long do you wait before you send the order out. I do busines with companies that have to have the check for 10 days before they will start on your order, even if you have order from them many times before. This is not the first list, I have summitted the information about my company to at least a half dozen people that were making lists, and on this last vendor list not one comment good or bad about my service was included. I feel that any list that has comments about service, the owner of the list is at risk for legal problems. Not taking the comments that are posted to the list about good service is just as dangerous and can be very damaging to a business. Sorry, for being so long, but I think that this current vendor list, is going to cause problems for many more people than it is going to help. If you have a copy of the vendor list that is over a few weeks old, you need to ask your question on the rubber stamping list, and get current information. She will be in that sonic tube thing for the liver tumors for six scheduled hours, during which time they will be filling her with the chemicals for the leukemia. I wasn't worried about any of this, until this morning when I realized that this is the first time I'll be going through chemo with her. All the other times, she had other people with her. Now it's up to me and frankly, it's a bit scary. Probably because even though she's told me of all the things that go on, I've never actually experienced them with her first hand, and the unknown is often more scary than the actual occurrences? Anyway, I'm off to try and make some sales calls as she is not scheduled to be back here until around 4 or 5, so perhaps the time will go more quickly if I try and keep busy. Rest assured, I will post to the list as soon as I hear anything. Take care you all, Don PeterPan Perceive............ Believe.................. and ACHIEVE! Got there and it's a different man and he looks at me and says "Where's your yellow slip?" I said I'd left it upstairs and the last guy didn't ever ask for it on the last two deliveries. He got all "oh well, I try to keep up with them" and I thought he'd send me away for it. Shherh, 8pm someone comes down says "I'm here for a package, I'm Cynthia Clavey" and he says he wants the slip that only has my apt # on it? like everyone steals from the security office? The last guy said "look for it yourself" when I came for the others. Gotta love living in the city. But... I got it! Wow, the rubber special arrived from Evo and Mr Evo. Leaves! So pretty. Much longer lasting than ones I bring home! Ornament letters! I is set for the holidays. Tons of word sayings. Goodie, goodie. My word stamp collection is growing. More leaves! And the boxes are really a surprise-- they're heavy duty weight. I don't know how to describe paper weight too well, but they're a tad hefiter than ones I remember getting bakery goods in. Need something like that yourself? Email Evo! And with the "snowman poop" stamp and all the great "Homemade Christmas" ideas everyone is sending out there, I'm going to give all my family someting intresting. So keep 'em comming.
