For instance, one of the swaps I am currently in... it takes about 15 minutes to make each individual card (and I am making seven), which to me isn't long, but I played around quite awhile figuring out which stamps I wanted to use, what colors, and how to stamp them (I am stamping on cork instead of cardstock)... They are kind of simple, but I like them and consider them to be some of the best I have made. I have hosted some swaps where I received some cards that to an advanced stamper (I consider myself to be somewhere between beginner and advanced) would be haphazard, careless or just too simple, but to the person who stamped them they took a lot of time and effort to put them together. I know several people just starting out who are just learning how to put together color, embellishments, etc. So please, don't be so quick to judge the quality of the cards you receive. I'm sure there will be more as people can figure out what is going on with the list. . . Q. There are different colors of plastic, such as clear, white, and pearl. What is the difference and can they be used the same way? A. All the plastic will shrink the same. The biggest difference is how and where you put the color. I color the clear on the back and do so with colored pencils. I also color very hard so I don't worry about the color getting lost, which can happen if you don't color fairly hard. Color the white on the front. Try using a Fabrico rainbow pad for this-really cool stuff! Q. What other types of medium can be used for adding color? A. You can use paint (use very little, this will intensify during shinking and may flake off if it's too thick), permanent markers (Berol work well), colored pencils, spray paint, what ever you want. I'd advise to try a small piece of plastic and the desired colorant to test. Q. Can you use paper edgers to cut out the image with? A. Absolutely! These can add a really cool look to your project! Q. Do you have to sand one side of the plastic? A. No. But I suggest doing it anyway. Some plastic won't shrink evenly without being sanded. Again, try a test to see if just spraying one side for the tooth would suffice. Q. Can I try the gold and silver paint pens on the plastic? A. YES, YES! Let the imagination go nuts! Try glitter and glitter paints!!! By the way, I wouldn't consider myself "new" to stamping, though I feel that there are many more techniques out there (such as book-making) that I would like to learn and incorporate into my stamping projects. I recently submitted cards for a special book that my local stamp club (no-one from this list, i think) was putting together. The theme was "rock-n'-roll" and follows along the lines of the current "lyrical swap" being held by our hollihobby. We were to stamp two cards which conveyed the lyrics, or title of a rock song. The organizer would put them into the book, and when the book was complete, all participants names would be put in a drawing. One lucky individual would take the book home with them. Our local club is made up of mostly women ranging in age from under 10 to almost 70. Submissions ranged from the popular Beatles, and elvis to alternative (I submitted "Fortress Around your Heart" by Sting, and "Wheel in the Sky" by Journey, a 70's band), and religious. As the time for the drawing neared, I found myself looking through the book with a group of ladies from my club. There were a few songs in the book I did not recognize but appreciated that the stamped card matched the title recorded by the participant. After all, we don't all have the same tastes in music (thank goodness! - that would be boring!). They oohed and ahhed through "Yellow Submarine" and "Strawberry Fields" by the Beatles, "Return to Sender" by Elvis, "Purple Haze" by jimi hendrix, and "Legs" by ZZTop. When the lady turned to the page where my cards were, she didn't recognize the songs that I had stamped (even though I had noted the songs on the card), she didn't even acknowledge that my stamping conveyed the title of the song. She just said: "What *IS* this *supposed* to be ? Who made this anyway ? Oh, I see..here's the title...I don't *get* it". I said "Actually it's mine". She responded by flipping back a page and quickly glancing at it "Oh, it's very nice" she said. Needless to say I was hurt, I had gone through all of our albums, music ranging from the 40's to the 90's to find songs titles that I could stamp with the stamps I had. Of course, I had thought of "Yellow submarine" but did not have such a stamp. I also resisted from going with a New Age rock group such as Aerosmith (70's), knowing that it was unlikely that the songs would be known. Anyway, to each his/her own. I learned long ago that every person has his/her own style and that may not be pleasing to all. I think that each of us has a personal best that we give to each swap with the knowledge of techniques and experience that we have at that point in time. The happy ending is that my name was drawn in the raffle. I am "lucky" enough to have the rock n' roll book at my elbow to view at my leisure. :) Michelle. ------------------------------ End of rubberstampers Digest V2 #356 ************************************ To subscribe to rubberstampers Digest, send the command: subscribe rubberstampers-digest in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com".
