This story makes me crack-up and almost PIMP every time I read it. Just thought I'd repost for all the new list members who haven't had the pleasure. . . (from 8 months ago) ok.. this is the beginning, back in february: ok.. here's the deal. we got this bird, lives in the bushes out front. been there long as we've been here (well.. it looks like same bird, acts like same bird, never see more than one of 'em, but.. I dunno how long birds live either.. could be the great great great great grandbird of the original bird for all I know, anyway, some bird has been there long as we have), and it's favorite thing to do is sit on the mailbox. it must leave, it obviously eats (A LOT), but ya never see it anywhere but on the mailbox and it's darned near always there. It has digestive difficulties, IMO, but Erin informs me that birds digestive process only takes an hour.. and.. judging from the appearance of the mailbox, that's 'bout right. anyway, it's been there forever, sittin' on the mailbox, and leavin' it's digestive byproducts where it sits. ok.. now.. we got this mailman who's an ass. not literally, just figuratively. man is never happy. first he threatened to stop delivering the mail cuz a hinge was rusty. ted fixed that. while later, he threatened to stop delivering the mail cuz the box was ugly. ted painted it. while later, he threatened to stop delivering the mail cuz it didn't have house numbers on it. ted painted house numbers on it. (a casual drive round the neighborhood indicates that other mailmen don't have a problem glancin' at the house to see what number it is, one street over (different carrier) almost nobody has numbers on their boxes.. ). I guess he ran out of people to pick on again, and decided he didn't like the bird. left us a note, said stop that bird from leavin' droppin's on the mailbox. so, every time I went out I'd scrape the box. that wasn't good enough. left another note other week, said problem isn't the bird, problem is the box is in the bushes, move the box by 2/6 or you won't get mail anymore. now.. casual drive round the neighborhood indicates that other people are allowed to have bushes round their mailbox.. and the fool bird is gonna sit on the box no matter where it is anyway, it's nice and warm, and gives him a good view of the street.. short of moving it to the back yard, I don't see what that woulda accomplished. SO saturday we had to go by the post office to pick up a package, so ted had a chat with them, and was agreed that moving the mailbox was silly. So he got a new mailbox and put it out there, and the guy said he'd talk to the mail guy. So monday, there's another note in with the mail sayin' as of tomorrow you have to pick up your mail at the post office. guess he didn't like the new box or something. SO, Ted takes the notes to call and have a chat with the postmaster, and I took myself cross town to the post office yesterday to pick up the mail. So, I get there and knock on the door (it's not a real post office, is a carrier annex) and gal comes and I tell her I'm there to pick up my mail. And she goes has it been on hold? and I go no, mailman just doesn't wanna deliver it anymore, sez I gotta pick it up. and she says why? and I said cuz there's a bird sits on the mailbox. and she laughed. so she goes off and gets someone else. he sez what's the problem. since I wasn't inclined to deal with the problem, having passed that one over to ted cuz I'm so fed up with the mailman I figured I couldn't do it politely, I said no problem, just wanna pick up my mail please, mailman said he wouldn't deliver it anymore. and he goes why? and I go cuz there's a bird sits on the mailbox. and he laughed. so I go no, really.. that's why.. can I have my mail please? So he goes and looks for it and comes back with the postmaster who sez what's the problem? and I allowed as how I just wanted to pick up my mail please. then he goes on how he believes he'd talked this with ted, and I agree that someone did, and he asks did he replace the box? and I allowed as how he did, AND put new numbers on it to boot, and that musta REALLY set off the mailman, cuz previously he was willing to confront that evil dirty bird through 2/6, but apparantly only if he was sittin' on the old mailbox instead of on the new one, cuz he decided to quit on the 3rd instead. and he laughed. I'm thinkin' sure is nice all these folks are so amused, and ask if I can have my mail please. SO.. they go off again to fetch my mail, and it's NOT THERE. Postmaster sez he's not talked to the mail guy yet but he'll talk to him that afternoon, and if he's not already delivered my mail (he didn't have any answer as to why, if he'd left me a note tellin' me I had to go fetch the mail, he took it with him..), he'll send him back out to do so. So.. I left. So, day went, mail never showed up so today Ted calls and talks to the postmaster who sez he didn't get a chance to talk to the mail guy yesterday because there was some postal emergency came up that required him to leave and when he got back the man had come and gone, but that HE (meaning the postmaster) considered it a non-problem and he'd talked to the man this mornin' and the mail would be delivered today and every day from now til forevermore, cuz apparantly the postal creed has been rewritten.. neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor hail nor birdshit will stop the mail, least in this part of columbia. hallelujah. ok.. now I gotta wing it. So the next day I think I got mail no problem. The day after that I come home and there's this goo all over the mailbox. Vile looking brown juicy goo. I dunno what this stuff is.. could be anything.. NFW am I touchin' it.. I checked, the bird was still around, so it hadn't killed it, yet.. I came in and got my rubber gloves, extracted the mail from the box, and called ted. He called the postmaster. the postmaster goes I can't BELIEVE I'm havin' to talk to you again.. but I'll find out what he's done and get back to ya, so next day he calls back and says he's talked to the mailman, and his story is that he drove up to the mailbox, and the evil bird sat there and stared him down (as if..) and he had no choice but to spray the bird with his dog spray to get him to leave so's he could put the mail in the box. and the postmaster said it wouldn't happen again. by then, I was scared of the man.. and distrustful. I still won't put my bills in the box to be picked up.. and the dog spray had dissolved the glue on the numbers we'd stuck on the mailbox, so they fell off. well.. 2 of 'em fell off. so.. couple weeks go by, and we get a new nasty note in the mailbox, sayin' there's no numbers on the box, and if we don't get numbers on the box with a week or so, he wasn't gonna deliver the mail anymore. now.. we don't live in a rural area.. you can see the house and it's numbers from the mailbox if ya just glance up. Our name and address are on the inside of the box, and this man has been delivering our mail for almost 6 years.. he knows this stuff. So.. we write him a note back sayin' we put numbers on the mailbox, and he removed 'em when he vandalized the thing with his dogspray, and if he was so determined they needed to be there, he could go to lowes and buy the replacement numbers and stick 'em on himself. That was the last we heard 'bout that. so far. so we get to end of april I guess, and get a new note sayin' the bushes are too big, they're touching his truck and we need to trim 'em. Ted writes him a note back and says they're fixing to bloom, and he'll trim 'em soon as they're done doing that. one bloomed, and when it was done, he trimmed it. the other one hasn't bloomed yet, ought to any day now. So couple weeks ago we get another note, this one says I told you to trim the bushes and you ignored me and now if you don't have 'em trimmed by 5/25, I won't deliver your mail anymore. in not quite those words. So ted let that go, hoping the bush that's left would bloom so's he could trim it, but it hasn't yet. So yesterday, he called the postmaster again, and the postmaster again said I can't BELIEVE I'm havin' to talk to you AGAIN.. and the mail will still come.. again. oh.. and it turned out there were 2 birds. I think there's just one again now, but not sure. They/it don't spend a great lot of time sitting on the mailbox anymore, but then it's warm now.. so they wouldn't. They/it just likes to sit there cuz is nice and black and warm, with a good view of the street, in the winter. so.. now we're waiting to see what he finds to complain about next. probably it'll be my mail is too.. colorful or something. "your mail is too unusual. If you don't stop getting unusual mail and revert to getting plain old boring mail within 2 weeks, your mail will no longer be delivered and you'll have to pick it up at the carrier annex." I think that's 'bout the only thing left. anno _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. The 'funny craft lady' was Carol Duvall, now on the Home & Garden cable television station (HGTV). Carol used the egg beater to make twisted cord to *attach* to a tassel, not to make the tassel itself. To make the twisted cord: Tie one end of the cording material (it works better if you have at least two pieces which should be 3 x the length you want the final product to be) to one of the "tines" of an electric or hand-cranked egg beater. Have someone hold the other end very tightly or tie this end to a drawer pull or door knob or something stationary. Start cranking or use low speed to twist the cord until it starts to kink up on itself. Stop twisting. Grab the twisted cord in the middle of its (now shortened) length and ease up on the taughtness between the two ends. The cording will twist up on itself and then relax just a little. That's it and it's nearly permanent. Basic tassel: Cut a piece of cardboard that's a couple inches wide and as long as you want the finished tassel to be. Wind embroidery floss or yarn or gold thread or whatever around and around and around that cardboard until your tired or you run out of thread (save a couple feet to finish it off). For the hanger, take a piece of the same stuff as the tassel, about 10 inches, and thread it under the wrapped up thread so it's between the thread and the cardboard. Pull this piece to the one edge of the cardboard and tie up all the wrapped threads really really tight. Now slide a scissor blade under the wrapped threads and cut them off the cardboard at the other edge. Now take a foot or two of the same thread and start wrapping around all the threads about 3/4 of an inch (or whatever looks good) from the hanger. Leave a little tail of this thread so you can use it in a knot in a minute. It looks really professional if you lay these wrapping threads right next to each other instead of the the kind of winding you did to make the tassel body. Stop when you have just enough thread to join to the tail I told you to leave so you can tie a know with these two ends. Tuck the knot under the wrapping threads. Now trim the tassel dangling threads so they're even. The end. Leslie "Finger Print-cess" >>> 01/29/98 11:53pm >>> Does anyone know how to use an egg beater to make tassels? And it wouldn't hurt to make a "hard-copy" print-out of ones address book and web bookmarks. You can always use the back for scratch paper (masks, run it through the blender, whatever) later, if it's not needed.
