This motivated me to ask for help. There is a good stamp store here, offering classes, stamps and supplies, lots of friendly help. At least twice they've tried to get a club going. The store provides a meeting place and publicity; the club members decide on activities, meeting time, etc. Each time the club has fallen flat. It is about to collapse once again. Each time one or two people are left to plan and execute the plans; a few people participate; a few complain I've only attended one meeting. Just in time to learn the only active member has had it! I could see why. Everyone was supposed to bring in patterns to share. Only that one member brought in anything. As it turned out, I had patterns in my box of goodies, so I shared them. The others were very pleasant and so nice and so empty-handed! Their response was unanimous: "I don't have any patterns." What have others done to organize and motivate a group? This is a large area with lots of stampers. The store owner and others who have tried to help in the past are mystified. Why does the club fall apart? Why are there so few who want to participate? (One month only the "active" member showed!") Unless there is a way to breathe life into the undertaking, this month will be the last for this group. The store owner is tired of trying! Previous attempts have included demos by volunteers, swaps (and most showed up empty-handed!) mini-classes with hands-on activities. Any ideas? I hope stamp clubs are not TAN subjects. If I get thrown off the list, I'll be in a real stamping void! Thanks for any help! Unfortunately, when Bob arrives at the stadium he realizes the seat is in the last row in the corner of the stadium - he's closer to the Goodyear blimp than the field. About halfway through the first quarter, Bob notices an empty seat 10 rows off the field, right on the 50 yard line. He decides to take a chance and makes his way through the stadium and around the security guards to the empty seat. As he sits down, he asks the gentleman sitting next to him, "Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?" The man says no. Now, very excited to be in such a great seat for the game, Bob again inquires of the man next to him, "This is incredible! Who in their right mind would have a seat like this at the SuperBowl and not use it?" The man replies, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me, I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we haven't been together at since we got married in 1967." "Well, that's really sad," says Bob, "but still, couldn't you find someone to take the seat? A relative or close friend?" "No," the man replies, "they're all at the funeral." - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 17:56:21 -0500 From: rubberchickenlady@juno.com (Betsy McLoughlin) Subject: Re: RubberTown: Looking for catalogs... Don't know *how* we did it - it just happened and it's been a great way to share stamping ideas - also a great way to forge those friendships that are born because of this list! In the past, we've gathered in my dining room and that meant that I carted all my RS stuff downstairs - then back up again when we were done. We're getting together again next month and I finally have my rubber room cleaned out and organized enough so that we can all stamp right here! :-) Each time we get together, we try to come up with a *theme* for the day - Example: everyone has to teach a technique they like or make convention pins or just work on current swaps. Share your favorite stamping tip ! I started a stamp club here. There aren't many stampers around and it has ended up with only 4 of us. We meet the third Tuesday of the month at each other homes. We all take a turn having it. We use to just drag tons of stamps with us and sit and stamp each others stamps but then we were going home with all this stuff to color and cut and nothing accomplished. Now we pick a theme, this month we are doing Valentines. I stamped 12 images for the front of the card and another girl will stamp 12. When we meet we all sit and color and then share ideas on how to matt them and make them into cards. We will all go home with 6 completed Valentines. We have been doing this for several months and it's working great. Everyone takes a turn stamping the images. We will all take some word stamps and ink pads along to do the insides of the cards and the envelopes. Everyone takes card stock and background paper and whatever they have avaiable. We all share whatever it takes to do the cards. Working great so far and fun. Ruthann > current swaps. Every now and then, I also have *mini stamp-a-thons* with just > a couple of stampers. I got to thinking (I know, that's dangerous) - hm-m-m, I could get 12 sets for $18 and have my 24 slots - AND I could configure them the way I wanted! The organizer from Costco and Sam's is just THERE - you can't change the configuration in any way. So, back to Wal-Mart today - spent my $18 and now all my cardstock is SO-O-O organized! I learned this from Tonya Rilling (Buffalo Stampede) and from Stamp Cabana during the Nov 97 stamping convention in Atlanta. The basic idea is using Tria refills & applicators to make backrounds. This is fantastic ! I've only got 4 Tria refills right now, but they work great ! Take a Tria applicator and cut it in half ... some paper (glossy works best, but I've tried others and they give different effects - some good, some bad). Put several drops of color onto the applicator .. I like mixing about 6 drops each of blue, green, pink & brown onto the applicator. I put them all over the applicator ... and then "mix" them with stamp cleaner. I like to just dab the stamp cleaner applicator against the Tria applicator -- the alcohol in the cleaner "mixes" the colors together. Next, "dab" it all over your paper for a splotchy look ..... or I use one stroke and make a "rainbow" on the paper ... or squiggles .... you get something different every time ! its great !!! The person at Stamp Cabana teaching the class said not to throw the old applicators away. Save them ... re-use them ... the more they're used, the better they get ! :-) I keep the "used" ones in a little zip lock baggie. I hope you can understand this ... I've scanned my checkbook cover and would be happy to forward a copy of it to anyone who wants to see the "splotchy" background. Eventually it will make it to my website, but for now, you'll just have to ask to see it. What's your tip ?? Do I make it to wet or do I have to iron it later on??? It looks really pretty but all the sides curl up. I iron paper and cardstock a lot. Maybe it's becuase I used to be a quilter and still love fabric! At any rate, it works. Just test on a scrap if you're concerned about the heat setting. I use a teflon coated travel iron that is handy, small and doesn't get as hot as the large irons do. kathie - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 20:50:18 -0800 From: Shaunna Frasure Subject: Re: Shauna Frasure... The store owner and others who have tried to My stamping group just "happened" and its because we are all enthusiastic about stamping that we don't want to miss out on a meeting. The meetings are informal and each one is at a different person's house and that person puts on lunch (its enough for the other stamps to bring all their stamping toys without having to worry about taking a plate of food as well). We bring over projects we want to accomplish like do a birthday card for someone but that never gets completed. We also bring over any new paper, stamps or accessories we bought. The majority of the time we end up looking at magazines, catalogues and the host person's stamp collection and stamping accessories. Before we know it 8 hours have gone by and we've had heaps of fun eating and talking and can't wait for the next meeting. I love to use the Berol Prismacolor pencils to color in my cards since there are TONS of colors to supply subtle shadings. But often I am not really pleased with the coverage I get when I use the pencils very softly and don't want to color REALLY hard since it covers up the lines of my image. So...this is what I do. Say for instance, that I'm coloring in a lady's dress with varying intensities of blue, from pale to dark. After I am through with the colored pencil, I choose the PALEST blue LePlume or Tombow that I have and lightly color over all of the colored pencil. What this does is "fill-in" all the places where the pencil didn't and it has the end effect of making all the shades blend beautifully in together. I suppose I COULD use some type of "blender" pen, but this works great for me.
