I'd posted that I preferred static cling, but that loops of cellophane tape had occasionally worked adequately ... well, I did cards for another swap last night (wee hours of this morning) and I still haven't found where I put the double-sticky tape (and we just bought another roll because we couldn't find the one DH *knew* we had "somewhere"). It was cellophane tape time again and it worked again. BTW, I'd had a problem with ink bleeding through the masks after the first few dozen impressions, but putting wide cellophane tape on the paper that will become the mask *before* cutting out the mask has proven effective. I just need to wipe excess ink off the mask occasionally. Feel free to print it out and save it ... or visit my website as often as you like ! Instructions for Joining Swaps 1. Read instructions carefully -- when in doubt, ask the hostess 2. Make identical cards (or specified art) in the specified quantity. If the swap says 6/5 or 6 for 5 this means that you make 6 of the art and you will receive 5 back. It is "understood" that the extra is for the hostess to keep. Sometimes if a hostess is hosting a swap using a particular vendor's stamps, the extra card is to send to the vendor (vendors love to see what we do with their stamps and sometimes your card turns into a display item) 3. Sometimes the hostess will say note cards, bookmarks, pins, magnets, or "anything goes". The most common submission will be a standard card size piece of art. 4. ALWAYS sign your artwork. Be sure that your "real" name (first & last) and your e-mail address (if you have one) are on the back of all your cards. This is so important in order to give proper credit when someone receives your artwork. I like to use a general philosophy that if you didn't put your name on it, then you must not be very proud of your work. I have small stickers that have my name, email address and my snail address on them. I just put that on the back of all my cards - its so much easier than hand writing everything each time. 5. Pay attention to the "due" date or the "postmark" date. Some hostess will allow extra time by stating that the cards are due postmarked by a certain date. The downside to this is that if you live far away from the hostess, your cards will take longer to arrive; and ultimately you can hold the swap. Always try to have your cards in before the due date or postmark date. It typically takes packets up to a week to arrive at their destination, but sometimes the post office takes longer. 6. Pay attention to what type of "return" the hostess is asking for. As a hostess myself I average out-of-pocket expenses of $7-10 per swap. This means that people don't include enough postage to get the packet home -- remember that not everyone is making the same thing you are, and it may take more postage or a larger envelope to return art. On average, a 9 x 12 is the best size envelope to send. This means that postage for the return will be a MINIMUM of $1.01, but usually a bit more. Then again, sometimes the 5 x 7 envelope works too; and this cost an average of $.78 to return, but sometimes more. Most hostess realize you can't predict this sort of thing and they as for "SASE plus extra postage". This means Self-Addressed-Stamped-Envelope (with same postage as your existing packet will take to make it to them, plus a few extra stamps -- 2 extras usually get the job done fine). Not all hostess return unused postage or $$ -- that is a common practice. Sometimes people ask you to re-use the envelope -- remember that this isn't always possible, so I don't recommend trying it. You never know what the post office will do to a package -- and the person usually has the envelope so taped up you can't get in it -- or its been re-used too many times already, its a mess. 7. When you send your art to the hostess, you do NOT include a separate stamped envelope for each art piece -- it is one large envelope for everything - --- unless the hostess directs otherwise. 8. Newbies are always welcome -- and there are specific swaps for newbies only. 9. It is generally accept practice that the artwork must have at LEAST one stamp. Some swaps require more than one; and every hostess is different. There has been some discussion of late regarding clip-art images --- check with your hostess before you sign-up to be sure of his/her take on it. Each swap has a theme -- just be sure to stay within the theme. 10. ALWAYS email your hostess privately when discussing the swap -- including signing up for it. Not every hostess is subscribed to the lists at all hours. It also helps cut down on the list mail. If you're going to be late, or have to drop -- email the hostess IMMEDIATELY so you can save her the headache of tracking you down. Communication is very important. 11. And last, but not least, if you have a question -- ask the hostess .... or ask the list (message boards) for an opinion -- we've got a few opinions out there ! :-) ******* Here's a list of the swaps I'm hosting this year. Let me know if you'd like to sign up, or if you need more info: February 15th - Imaginations!
