The answer is below and probably more info than you really expected. This explaination was posted to the list a while back, by Gretchen Davey. In exchange for a 32-cent postage stamp, I'll send a little color brochure of my 20 postoid designs. Just send me your snailmail addy and I'll pop it in the mail for you. :) Sheryl (aka Postoid Artist) "Postoids" by Gretchen Davey Postoids, “Faux Postage Stamps”, Artistamps, Mail Art - all of these are names for a fun hobby that’s been around for a long time, but hasn’t been all that well known around this area. These neat little “postage stamps” can be extremely elaborate, resembling real stamps very closely, or they can be quite simple and very easy to do. Some are made on the computer, or using a copy machine. The techniques we will cover will exclusively use rubber stamps, doing each postoid individually. Postoids are a fun way to enjoy stamping when you don’t have a lot of time or space to do a large item. They’re a great portable project because a lot of it can be done ahead of time. The finish work can be done anywhere - on vacation, in the car, in a waiting room, or anywhere you can color, glitter, or cut! Finished postoids make great envelope decorations and are great for “swapping” with other postoid enthusiasts! Postoids are usually gummed so they can be stuck to envelopes as a decoration, so peel-&-stick paper or gummed paper is a great thing to have on hand. You can also make your own adhesive and paint it on the back. Since this tends to curl the paper, you need to let it dry completely and then iron it flat with a DRY iron (using a cloth). Of course, you can also individually apply glue to each postoid to adhere them to the surface, but if you want to exchange postoids with others, you need to have the adhesive on them in a way that lets others use them easily. The three techniques we will cover are: 1.) Pre-made postoid stamps, 2.) Empty postoid frame/tiny stamp postoids, and 3.) design-your-own postoids. Method #1: Pre-made Postoids. Many companies carry pre-made postoid stamps. Hero Arts, Peddlar’s Pack, and All Night Media are just three companies that carry lots of fun designs. With these, you just stamp the postoid on your surface, color it in, add glitter or other special effects if desired, and cut out. The “Stamp Edgers” from Fiskars make a great postage stamp edge! You can also stamp your postoids right onto the envelope and color them in. This is a great way to decorate your envelope when you don’t have time or the materials to make full-fledged postoids. Sometimes you can’t tell if they’ve been stamped or stuck to the outside of the envelope! Materials needed: Gummed or Peel & Stick Paper Postoid Stamps Coloring markers Glue Stamp Edgers Method #2: Fill a Frame Postoids. Empty postoid frames are carried by a number of companies, such as Hero Arts & TooMuchFun. You then take one of your tiny stamps (didn’t we all start out buying a bunch of those because they were cheaper, but now don’t know what to do with them?) and stamp the image inside of the empty frame. Depending on how your eye is, some prefer to stamp the frame first and then fill it; others stamp the tiny image first and then stamp the frame around it. After coloring the image, add a “postal saying” and “value” and, voila!, you have a postoid! Materials needed: Gummed or Peel & Stick Paper Postoid Frame Tiny Stamps Colored Pens Stamp Edgers Method #3: Design your own Postoids. Sometimes you see a stamp that would make a terrific postoid, but it’s too big for an empty postoid frame. You may have a great idea, but you’ll need to combine a couple of stamps to achieve the results you want. This is where your creativity can kick in! On a piece of paper, play around with your stamps, trying different placements and combinations. When you get the image you want, draw a plain rectangle around it and see if the finished product is what you want. If it is, duplicate your design a number of times on a piece of adhesive backed paper, color and decorate as you please, draw the frames around them, and cut them out with your stamp edgers. Some of these “do-it-yourself” postoids are the neatest of all! Materials Needed: Gummed or Peel & Stick Paper Small stamps Colored pens An extra fine-tipped black pen (for the frame) Stamp edgers Recipe for Adhesive: 1 Tablespoon white glue (like Bordens or Alene’s Tacky Glue) 1 Tablespoon white vinegar 1 drop peppermint (or other) flavoring This can be stored in a small plastic container to have ready to paint onto the back of your paper with a small paint brush. If you want a larger amount, just keep the proportions the same: 1 measure of white glue to 1 measure of white vinegar. Remember that the paper will curl as it dries, so be prepared to iron it flat when it’s dry (or flatten it under a heavy book). - -- Sheryl Davis aka Postoid Artist ICQ# 810266 - - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 1998 10:42:59 -0600 From: "Barbara" Subject: RubberTown: COMM: Victorian Colors Paper Grabbag Fellow Stampers, Creative Images is pleased to announce we now have more colors of cardstock for you to choose from. You can either stamp a postoid right on your envelope or you can print postage size items on your printer on sticker paper. Fiskars makes a pair of scissors called Stamp that looks like the zig zag edge of a postage stamp. As long as you don't put them where a stamp really belongs the post office does not have a problem with them going on your envelope. This week I finally got set up to make my own stamps. I want to thank everyone who has been so wonderful about taking a leap of faith on a new vendor and ordering cardstock grabbags from me. What I would like to offer now is a grabbag of unmounteds of my 1st plate of rubberstamps for $20.00 which includes shipping in the US. Add $1.00 shipping for Canada, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland. Add $2.00 shipping for Australia and New Zealand. Let me know if I left anyone out. There are a total of eighteen images that fill a 9" x 13" sheet. There are six large ones, 4 medium, 4 small, 2 word type and 2 tiny ums. The large stamps are all large enough to fill the front of a card. These include a frog on a lily pad, a bridge with a stream running underneath, a mountain scene, 2 hummingbirds with flowers, a beach scene with seashells, and a large basket of flowers. The medium stamps include an Indian girl feeding a bird, a boy bunny shyly giving a girl bunny flowers, a feather (like a writing quill), and a sign that says Honeybees Welcome. The small stamps are a cactus, a begging dog, a chick on an egg with a feather in his hat and a butterfly. The word stamps are Handstamped By: and Good Job! The tiny stamps are a bird in flight (perfect for adding to the sky of your card) and a postoid size frog on a lily pad. I also sell HALOS and loop tape for those of you that use HALOS or are wanting to get a started set of HALOS. The images on this sheet of rubber will take about a yard of loop tape which is $5.99 per yard. If you order it with the UM Grabbag then there would be no additional shipping charges. Great cards! Fantastic Cards! oh boy! here's some descriptions: (CP=corrugated paper) >From Lynette Walters lynettew@ptialaska.net A great black paper swap, (wanna join mine lynette! heee!) the R and L sides are cut with the fancy smancy Fiskars, very nice!, and one black is a white CP with black streaks across it and on tope of this is a Magenta? kitty in a square border frame stamp that's been cut out with those fancy fiskars edges, and this is ontop of black paper over the CP. on the top/bottom of this is a white strip of embossed miracle tape, with white ep. VERY NICE and elegant card, I love it. >From Bonnie djgarby@warwick.net A very romantic and well balanced card, lots to this and so that balance is important, good job! On pink marbled cardstock is a CP of white, rounded edges, and 3 hearts punched into each rounded edge, very nice affect!, and in the center is a lighthouse stamped and colored in with chalks?, and under neath this oval lighthouse is a red mulberry ontop of pink mulberry, and it's been trimmed perfectly and with those gorgeous wisps. ALL of this is ontop of another red mulberry with the wisps that's been cut out perfectly to fit under the white CP with the cut out hearts in the corner, so these hearts are RED. And a gorgeous red bow in the tope center of it all, just above the oval. I really love it, a very romantic card!! A busy card with lots of work done to it that is perfectly balanced. I love to see this, because it's hard for me to do! VERY nice. >From Terri Bradbury brad1225@gte.net I've never tried doing this kinda CP but it looks so nice and unique that I can't wait to try it! Black ink on white cardstock are rows of daisies? or Sunflowers, left plain, not colored in, (nice affect), and they look like roller stamps that have been rolled on kitty korner, (another nice affect). Offcentered to the left of the card is a gorgeous yellow daisie? or sunflower with green paper cut out as leaves, the flower and leaves have been corrugated and glued on. Nice and elegant and simple, not too fusy, very nice. >From Barbara bstamper@ix.netcom.com On gold cardstock is a black embossed Girraffe to the left of the card on a smooth paper, then corrugated to the right of this image is the rest of the card. Beautiful gold color! Nice fast card to make for a childs birthday, thanks for the idea! :) >From Sandy Kavanagh@unm.cdu WOW!! Totally awesome! I really love this art! So, how'd you get the gorgeous border around your card? On goldish/brown matte paper is stamped in black ink ancient images of our ancestors like the kind you'd find in a cave thousands of years old, for a background. Then, what I believe is the UTEE method is stamps several more similar images on a square thick piece, that's gorgeous hues of brown and beige ad something shiny whitish. The images are in black/darkbrown colors. I love this entire square! I want to do do my UTEE like this! I'm guessing you used your pearlex in this? Mine never comes out this nice. boo-hoo! This is placed to the lower left of the card and then offcentered and in perfect angle to highlight this square is a CP of golds/brown colors, it looks like a piece of copper that's been aged and corrugated. Anyway, i love this! MAGNIFICENT! Thanks Sandy. Do you use a paintbrush to put on your pearlex or what? Are you reading this Sandy?? Write and tell me the answers please!!! >From Sherri S. Bldscons@netins.net Another fantastic art card! On dark red cardstock with rounded corners is a white paper cut on the top/bottom with those fancy smancy Fiskars and bordered with a nice squiggly type stamp, nice affect, and then a rectangle plain green with rounded corners is in the center, and a yellow cp is stamped with a ethnic woman what appears from Africa carrying a vase on her head and using a walking stick, and this image is corrugated as well as the paper. On the left is some green ribbon weaved into the white border. A busy card with lots of work done to it that is perfectly balanced. I love to see this, because it's hard for me to do! VERY nice. >From Giselle wolfenhnd@aol.com on white cardstock is some blue/purple/red/yellow background scattered across the card, made with sponges I'm guessing?, a goild square border inset, and then a gorgeous CP that i have no idea how this was done and I'm dying to know! Are you reading this Giselle??? Write and tell me PLEASE. It's a gorgeous Stamp Oasis stamp I've seen several times in Somerset Studios add. How was it colored in, how was it made so shiney and pearlescent like? HOW did you to this, I want details!! I'm dying to know! Well, that's it, and big fat thank you to Lynette for hosting! :) *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^Stargazer - stargazser@juno.com*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ for RS card samples: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/6456 for Star Trek: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/6457/ _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
