As a vendor, I always struggle with what I should charge. If it's a package that will mail priority, then I just charge the flat rate (ie., $3 for a package under 2 pounds, or the appropriate global priority rate, etc.). If, on the other hand, the packaging has to be purchased also, I usually charge a bit more. Sometimes I use padded envelopes or boxes, and these are not inexpensive items . . . but I think it's important to protect the items properly. I usually do try to say "shipping and handling" in my ads, to indicate that the charge is not just for postage but also for materials handling. Is it reasonable to include the salaries of the packers? I'd say not . . . I think that it should be included in the price of the merchandise. But everyone runs their business in their own way. The $6.70 you were charged seems not just excessive, but ridiculous for a package valued at only $16. Hope this helps a little bit! (Please put SARA in the subject line.) I recently ordered a catalogue well-discussed on the list as a beautiful work of art in and of itself, aside from having nice stamps. And the cost of the catalogue was refundable. Let's say it cost about $4.00, though I don't recall exactly how much it really was. I figured I'd be able to get a couple of things, and I'd at least make back what I paid for the catalogue. Sounds good, right? Yeah, until I saw that the minimum shipping was $3.00--even for unmounteds only. Damned if I was going to spend whatever I was going to spend, only to have $3.00 of the $4.00 go towards postage for two or three UMs that might have run 55¢ or 78¢ at most. The neutral cardstock grabbag have been selling extremely well, but the biggest comment everyone kept making is I want colors. This grabbag includes: Dark Victorian Blue, Deep Plum Linen, Ash (which is a tan with black flecks throughout) and White Linen. These are all 80 lb cardstock 8 1/2" x 11" sheets. I also still have the Neutral Paper Grabbags which includes: White Embossed Leather, Pebblestone, Oyster Flecks, and Cottonwood. All of these are textured or have flecks or specks of a variety of neutral colors throughout the cardstock. These are not plain ho-hum papers - they are all quite beautiful. All are 80 lb. cardstock except the pebblestone which is 65 lb. The Neutral Grabbag is 75 sheets of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock for $10.00 plus $3.00 shipping. If you purchase 2 or more grabbags the total shipping is just $3.00 even if these are shipped to different addresses in the U.S. For shipping to Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Belgium add $6.95 for 1st grabbag and $3.95 for each additional grabbag. For delivery to Australia and New Zealand add $8.95 shipping and $5.95 for each additional grabbag. This week I finally got set up to make my own stamps. I want to thank everyone who has been so wonderful about taking a leap of faith on a new vendor and ordering cardstock grabbags from me. What I would like to offer now is a grabbag of unmounteds of my 1st plate of rubberstamps for $20.00 which includes shipping in the US. Add $1.00 shipping for Canada, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland. Add $2.00 shipping for Australia and New Zealand. Let me know if I left anyone out. There are a total of eighteen images that fill a 9" x 13" sheet. There are six large ones, 4 medium, 4 small, 2 word type and 2 tiny ums. The large stamps are all large enough to fill the front of a card. These include a frog on a lily pad, a bridge with a stream running underneath, a mountain scene, 2 hummingbirds with flowers, a beach scene with seashells, and a large basket of flowers. The medium stamps include an Indian girl feeding a bird, a boy bunny shyly giving a girl bunny flowers, a feather (like a writing quill), and a sign that says Honeybees Welcome. The small stamps are a cactus, a begging dog, a chick on an egg with a feather in his hat and a butterfly. The word stamps are Handstamped By: and Good Job! The tiny stamps are a bird in flight (perfect for adding to the sky of your card) and a postoid size frog on a lily pad. I also sell HALOS and loop tape for those of you that use HALOS or are wanting to get a started set of HALOS. The images on this sheet of rubber will take about a yard of loop tape which is $5.99 per yard. If you order it with the UM Grabbag then there would be no additional shipping charges. I accept checks, money orders, Visa, MasterCard and Discover. By the way, Creative Images is an angel company. If you have any questions you can e-mail me or give me a call at (316) 364-8744. We include the shipping and handling in our prices to keep away from such problems but of course, this adds other problems. People will look at our price for an inkpad, as example, and say it is too high. But then, we don't add the $1-$2 in shipping and handling to mail it out. It is our advantage that we deal wholesale through dealers so I only have to sell this idea once for each account. Is it right to charge for the labor to pack outgoing orders? Of course. Someone is going to pay for the labor. We are all paid for the work we do. The question is whether it should be rolled into the price of the product. If it is, why isn't postage also? What about packing materials? Same logic, same answer. Is it out of line to charge $6.70 to send a $16.00 package? Would you feel better if the company raised the price to $25 and then charged the $6.70? More realistically, perhaps they should raise the price two dollars to $18.00 and then only charge you $4.70. Then the shipping sounds pretty reasonable, doesn't it? You still pay the same. In the end, it's all in our heads. The cost is the cost -- TOTAL cost. If that is acceptable, then how you got there isn't of much importance. If it isn't, then no explanations in the world will suffice. - --Chris McEwen reply to: Socrates Press socrates@sprintmail.com Keyport, Washington - -----Original Message----- From: StamPerson ubject: Re: RS: Re: [SARA-L] Postage & Handling This is an interesting question. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 16:04:36 -0500 From: Burnette Subject: RubberTown: Looking for Nancy Guggisberg Does anyone know what happened to Nancy Guggisberg?
