My DVD arrived last week, and it successfully played on my region-locked laptop (my desktop PC isn't region locked, but I haven't been able to patch my laptop). It also has a big "0" on the back. Well, TK would be handy for all sorts of things. To turn off the light when I was in bed. To change tapes on the VCR (grin) Whether this would be TK-related or not, something that would be really cool would be to be able to transfer images directly to paper; to *show* exactly what I imagine... Okay, most likely this is the situation: The UK uses a video standard called PAL (I forget the acronym). It was developed a couple of years after the US began airing TV shows in color. The standard that the US came up with is called NTSC (again forget the acronym). Since the US began broadcasting shows in color they have not changed their color format. When the UK began broadcasting in color, PAL had been developed. It has a higher resolution image and brighter picture. This means that the way in which the color information is sent is different between the two countries. They use different resolutions or different line numbers (the number of horizontal and vertical lines that make up the picture). I'm not sure of the breakdown, but MOST countries use PAL or another later derived system. North America is pretty much the only place using NTSC When products are made for a region, they are obviously made using the format of the country they are in. Since the UK DVDs were obviously intended for a UK consumer market they are in PAL format. This differs from region encoding. Region encoding is a method of IDing DVDs by arbitrary regions devised by big business to limit distribution of media. (The legitimate reason for this is to prevent the release of a DVD of a movie *before* the theater release of said film in another country.) A DVD that is encoded with a region can only be played on a player that is set for that region. There are DVD players out there that are 'regionless' and can play DVDs from any region. (These tend to be expensive) Computers with DVD-ROM drives can often be set to be regionless or you can switch the region if you choose. (Be careful, in some computers you are limited in the number of times you can switch the reason.) There are numerous software 'patches' out there that can bypass region encoding on a computer. These are illegal, so of course I can't tell you where to find them. :-) Since the first DVD, Slaves of Jedikiah, is regionless but PAL encoded you need to have either a DVD player that can convert PAL to NTSC or else a PAL/NTSC converter. Both are available, although converters tend to be hard to find, at least I had a hard time. The DVD player someone on list recommended, the Apex AD-1200, works wonderfully! It converts PAL to NTSC with no problems. The earlier version had a secret menu to make the player regionless, but I haven't been able to find it on this player. If anyone knows if it exists, please email me off list. :-) Anyway, the Apex DVD player cost $70 at Circuit City. Really nice buy. mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! There are companies here (and I'm sure in the US as well) that will take PAL format video tapes and make NTSC copies, but I'm not sure if they can do the same for commercial DVDs because of the anti-piracy encryption. I don't have the TP DVD yet, but I also don't have a DVD player, so I plan to fork out whatever it takes to get one that converts PAL to NTSC, and hope for the best. Removing the region coding is not breaking copyright, nor is it cracking encryption. Even if you could argue that applying a firmware patch to a drive is somehow an encryption-cracking action, then that doesn't mean squat outside the USA; the DMCA is a *US* law, and an unconstitutional one at that. They're actually investigating whether *region coding* is illegal in Australia, because it breaks the Fair Trade Practices Act. I imported the Slaves of Jedikiah DVD, and had some trouble at first. Sony and a lot of the "big name" electronics DVD players won't accept regionless because of the stranglehold they try to have on the market and their ridiculous regional encoding system. The first DVD player I tried it on, an Oritron, played the disc, but tried to output the picture in PAL format, which just makes your NTSC TV roll and roll, since it's being overloaded visually. My roomate's i-Mac played it fine, but on the LCD monitor, the SOJ looked very fuzzy due to the year in which it was filmed. You just have to shop around as far as players go. I've found that GE, Apex, and JVC will play the disc, and automatically "correct" the output to NTSC. If you are looking for a bottom line DVD player that will play the disc, and is also easily "hackable", I suggest USA Circuit City's Apex AD-1200. It's cheap ($64.99), has a decent picture, and has a limited ability to read MP3s and Jpeg files. Any questions, please write me back at melsegoo@ttacs.ttu.edu, and I'd be glad to answer. Marcell J. If the law of proximity works (That's Shaun's idea about TP breakout being encouraged by other telepaths near by) then as more and more people order the DVD's and CD's they will all be thinking about TP and may influence even us 'somewhat older' sap friends to unleash our minds. I definately plan to hold a mass break out party as soon as you all jaunt over to England ;-) Which makes me wonder where people live... I know we've done this before but I get the feeling there are some newbies on the list so why not hold a survey of world wide location. Didn't someone plot the details on a map a few years back? I don't keep formal records, but I do have a rough idea of who's on the list at all times because I have to process any subscription changes. It took about a year for TPDIS to reach 100 members, and that's pretty much where it's been since. The list population is *really* stable. People who leave usually come back, although it may take a few months or years. I think of more favourites every time I look at one of your lists, but here are a few (in no particular order): TV: Buffy, Angel, Babylon 5, Hamish MacBeth, Doctor Who, Junkyard Wars, Due South, Pride and Prejudice (almost any version, but the latest was especially lovely), Blackadder, Avengers, Star Trek (all of them), Mutant X, Red Dwarf, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - I'll watch most TV SF/Fantasy. Not partial to sitcoms, "reality" series, or the new gritty cop shows. Favourite authors: to tell the truth I'll read almost anything that's not nailed shut, but I do especially love J.K. Rowling, Terry Pratchett, Lois McMaster Bujold, Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen, Charles De Lint, J.R.R. Tolkien, Susan Cooper, Elizabeth Peters (I fantasize that some day I will write a TP/Amelia Peabody crossover), Diana Wynne Jones, Douglas Adams, Leslie Charteris, Frances Hodgeson Burnett, Guy Gavriel Kay, Zenna Henderson, Barry Hughart, Barbara Hambly, Arthur Ransome, James H. Schmitz, Carole Nelson Douglas, Jane Haddam, Arthur Upfield, Phoebe Atwood Taylor, Peter Bowen, Neil Gaiman, Isaac Asimov... I think I'll stop there. Movies: Princess Bride, Star Wars, Fellowship of the Ring, Shrek, both Toy Stories, X-Men, Buckaroo Banzai, Chicken Run, Galaxy Quest. Music: Oysterband, Rawlins Cross, Spirit of the West, Moxy Fruvous, Runrig, Dougie MacLean, Arrogant Worms, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Jennifer Warnes, Beatles, Great Big Sea, Captain Tractor, Connie Kaldor, non-musical sound recordings: Totally addicted to the Stephen Fry readings of Harry Potter, ordered at vast expense from Amazon.uk and worth every penny and then some. >21) What is something(s) important/significant you've done over the last >two years? >(i.e. since the last time you filled out this survey) Quit my part time job as art director for On Spec Magazine. My favourite movies are American Beauty, Fight Club, And the Band Played On, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Empire Records, and High Fidelity. Favourite books would probably be The Mists of Avalon and Orson Scott Card's Ender series. As for music, Smashing Pumpkins, Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, Barenaked Ladies, and the Counting Crows rank pretty high on my extensive list of beloved musicians. >21) What is something(s) important/significant you've done over the last >two years? >(i.e. since the last time you filled out this survey) Well, I'm nearly finished with high school and will be moving to Poughkeepsie at the end of the summer in order to attend Vassar College (along with Geoffrey!!!!). Love Microsoft. Based on some of the responses from the survey something ocurred to me. I've got an idea, so I've got a new survey. I don't want to mention the point of this until after the results are in, since I don't want to bias the results. :-) Some of these questions are pretty personal, so if you want to email me off-list, that's fine. (Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything with the info and I'm not a cyber-stalker. Ask around people on the list, I tend to be a pretty frequent poster.) Some of the questions are red-herrings so you won't try to figure out what the point of the survey is. :-) I'm trying to be somewhat scientific about this, but anyone who's familiar with stats will know this isn't that rigorous. 1.)  Have you ever experienced psychic phenomena?

I think I'll go with a nice boring "not sure." For instance, I think Arpi and my first meeting would qualify as near-psychic, fateful, or very convenient.

2.)  Have you had experience with paganism,
witchcraft, or any other 'non-traditional' religion?

The closest I come is Quakerism ;)

3.)  Were you raised in a single parent family?

My parents divorced when I was in sixth grade. I spend one week at one parent's house and then switch. I don't know quite what you'd call that, other than "the living situation that makes it really difficult to reach Geoff."

4.)  Are your parents divorced?

Yes

5.)  Are you an only child?

Nope

6.)  What is your sexuality?

Gay

7.)  What type of student were/are you?

Above average

8.)  What do you spend more time doing:

     Reading   Watching TV   Online

I probably spend the most time online, but I enjoy all three. (And being online tends to involve reading, so ha! ;)

9.)  Rate the percentage of TV shows you watch that
are science-fiction shows:

Hmm.. Enterprise (which I forgot to mention on the other survey, stupid me), TP.. some of the anime I like are sci-fi... maybe a quarter of them?

10.)  The Blue or Green?  ( :-) )

The Blue. Definitely the Blue. ;)
