I wouldn't peg it just because it's on the Disney Channel as being lame, because Disney has done a lot of material that doesn't fit what I consider to be Disney stuff. Assuming it is pm and not am on a Sunday, it would be worth catching if I had the Disney Channel. And let's not forget where we Yanks have been watching the TP... As for what it was like to see the new series after watching the old series, well, I remembered even less of the old series than I do now (nothing like pictures and net descriptions to dredge up some memories- even though I suspect some are rather jumbled). I remember watching the first hour of the Origin Story on Valentine's Day of 1992 (I remember having to tape it because we were going out to dinner) with wide eyes and anticipation: The Tomorrow People, who I'd always wished were my friends (never mind they were all English and a _lot_ older than me), were back! I seem to remember being slightly bothered that the spaceship wasn't nearly as coherent as Tim. The other thing that annoyed me was that they weren't telekinetic, but I liked the fact that they no longer needed the belts. *strains memory* I kept wondering how they were connected. It was a long time before I remembered Peter the Time Guardian's statement: "But the Tomorrow People didn't start to emerge until the 21st century." I wondered if Adam and his friends were what they meant. Not only that, but they were then my age, and I could relate a lot better (not to mention comprehend what was going on). ( i later kicked his butt for changing it) i watched the rest of it and i was just like 'whoa' this is like, cool or something. i lived off of that for awhile and just by chance, i was leafing through the TV guide the day i went to get my prom dress and saw 'the tomorrow people' listed, and so, once again, i plugged a tape into the vcr and set it, and watched it. my adam was back!! (i had a crush on him, and even started watching Power Rangers because i thought he was the green ranger. hah!) so i continued my saturday at 5 tradition. i don't really know why i like it so much...i guess because even though i was in a lot of stuff at school, i still didn't fit in (the only skater girl in choir, the only non-druggie of the theatre techs, the only so-called "punk" on the dance squad) and i was made to feel different. i felt like i had found, even though they were just actors and charecters, someone i could relate to, i guess. thanks for listening to my babble! *continues to pogo even though the show is long over* later anne Don't go messing around! Roonie, a message to you roonie! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: starr@freenet.edmonton.ab.ca Subject: why I like it Date: 08 Feb 1996 10:11:31 -0700 (MST) I have never seen the new series, but I expect I will like it - maybe not as well as the old series, but then I remember when it first came on in Canada, pretty close to its original run in Britain. And I hate to tell you this, but I am of an age with the originals (as they would be now) - I once tried against all contradictions in the books and the series to figure out how old they were and came up with the conclusion that John was probably born the same year I was (within a year or two either way). Why do I still like it after so many years? The ideas behind it. That we can be better than we are. That we can solve problems more effectively with our brains than our fists. That our future holds something great and special. That different can be wonderful and not just lonely. That age and external appearance are less important than what is inside you. I mean, these were kids, consorting as equals with aliens and adults. Making a difference to the world, even if it had to be a secret. And they had the ultimate "clubhouse," secret from all the world. I liked the characters, too. Had the obligatory crush on John, but I wanted them all for friends. Also, even before I watched the TP I wanted to be a telepath - too much Andre Norton, I guess - I just thought it would be so cool. And they were what I wanted to be and then some. Like a lot of SF fans, I was usually on the outside in high school, not considered as weird as Clark who wore Star Trek uniforms (old series - there wasn't anything else then) to school, but too bookish, too nerdy to be included in anyone's clique. I have turned into a more or less normal adult, with a family and a profession in which I am respected, but that feeling of being an outsider remains, and I still identify with the outsider in fiction. I also look more conciously at what is on tv these days - there is nothing like having kids to make you aware of how much is out there that is REALLY TERRIBLE. I find it harder and harder to find things I can watch with them that are positive without being saccharine (nothing will make me believe that Care Bears are really a good influence on kids). I find I am going back to my past to find the things I loved (Thunderbirds is a good example - technology in the service of mankind, people helping others without thought of reward) that have plot and character development and encourage brains over brawn, integrity, kindness, etc. I am not saying that this other stuff should not be on TV (I even like some of it - not the cutesy stuff) but my guys are too young yet to differentiate well between reality and tv, unlike me (who is sure that if I can just find the right map of the London Underground I can figure out where the Lab should be). Centre of government for the Galactic Federation? The Galactic Federation itself? A sort of United Nations of space? Something like that. These days I have only the books to go by, and only 4 of the five, and some very old notes I made when I was watching the show in the late 70s or early 80s. My notes on Galactic Trig say "H.Q. of the galactic federation, not a planet, a large complex of artificial spheres." Questions Date: 18 Feb 1996 20:05:04 -0500 (EST) I'm working for memory (as usual) so someone please correct me if I get any of these wrong but... 1) What is the Galatic Trig like? They never really say. They show a council meeting of it in a couple episodes. It's kinda like an intergalatic embassy. It's, what?, 180 million lightyears from earth or something? Who lives there? Anyone who wants to. Reps from any telepathic species, the people who work there, etc. Is it safe to assume that it's still in existence? Yes 2) What is a Time Guardian? Someone who guards the time lanes and prevents people from using them (ie time traveling) without authorisation. What was the nature of their rapport with the original TP? Peter, a time guardian, had been captured by some space-outlaw for use in his nefarious plans. The TP rescued him, saved all time, and made the universe a much happier place to be. Later, he again asked them for help in capturing another alien outlaw, which they did, and saved all time yada yada yada :) 3) What freedom fo the Time Guardians have as far as time traveling goes? Presumably, they can do it all they want as long as they only observe, are authorised to travel by the higher-ups, and stay out of trouble. If a time guardian gets into trouble in his or her visited time, they're out of luck. No one will come to their rescue because of some rule that Ii can't completely remember. 4) Is there *anything* know canonically about Adam's past that I can use? He's australian. At one time ws bitten by a shark. And, according to the book, something really horrible happened that he spent 3 pages saying he didn't want to talk about. What kind of flamage can I expect for taking liberties? Well, given the info from which you have to work, none. I'm sure we'll all be happy with anything that tells us something about his past. 5) How old is John in the first series? He broke out at age 17 in 1973. 6) Was there ever a general concensus reached about TP suicide? Not that I can remember, but I vote for 'not possible' unless (possibly) it's assisted suicide. 7) Did any of the old Tp have more than one parent shown? Um.... no. Stephen, Tyso, and Mike's mom's were shown and Andrew's dad. BTW, ade, some of these questions might be good for the FAQ. ... Loraine Kelley wrote: > 5) How old is John in the first series? > He broke out at age 17 in 1973. Well, according to the first novel (_The Visitor_) he broke out at 14, some years unspecified before the first episode, Carol 3 months after him at 13, and Kenny an unspecified time after her at age 11. They were first contacted by the Trig (or at least a group called the Sophists) after Kenny broke out, and from them received the plans from which they built Tim. For what this is worth, anyway, _The Visitor_ does have a few inaccuracies, but it is all I have for background - don't have any of the episodes on tape. My old notes from the episodes say two things that might be useful in pinpointing ages - both from the episode Revenge of Jedekiah: 1. Tim had been on earth 3 years and 4 months and 2. the oldest Tomorrow person (i.e. John) was 20 (my recollection is the words "barely twenty" but I didn't write it down that way, so I'm not sure that is accurate). Revenge of Jedekiah was the last episode of season 3 which finished in May '75. This would make John born 1955 (gad, he's older than I thought - older than me!). My notes also say that Stephen was 15 when Tyso broke out, if anyone cares. And the books repeatedly say that Kenny is older than Stephen, which would argue that at least a couple of years elapsed between Kenny's break out and Stephen's (S. was 13 when he broke out). > > 7) Did any of the old Tp have more than one parent shown? > Um.... no. Stephen, Tyso, and Mike's mom's were shown and Andrew's > dad. Again, relying on the books, both Carol's parents were mentioned in _The Visitor_, John's father is mentioned (a police sgt.), Kenny's mum (dad died), and Stephen's dad actually gets a few lines. There is never any mention of John's mother, alive or dead, but then, maybe she didn't have a "real job" like Carol's mum, who was a documentary film maker, and was therefore deemed not interesting enough to mention. One of the later books says "John no longer had a father," but never any mention of the poor man's death otherwise. A question I have always wondered about - has anyone ever produced surnames for John, Carol or Kenny? I mean anyone connected with the show - all the others have surnames, but those three never did. I have, of course, in my tidy way, provided them with names of my own choosing, but I have always wondered about that (maybe something else for the FAQ?) Anyone interested? Or if anyone has a copy of _Lost Gods_ that I could buy off them, I'll trade _Three in Three_ for something else. _Three in Three_ is in pretty good condition - none of the pages are falling out and the cover is only a bit worn, not dog-eared or anything. Good Luck - Three in Three is the most common and Lost Gods etc the rarest. All are difficult to find above average condition. There was a time when I could have special ordered _Lost Gods_ and I didn't ... I carried around a photocopy out of BIP or Whitakers for years. My briefcase has a sort of black hole in it. I got this spare from a friend in Toronto who knew I liked the TP (although I don't think she is a fan herself, the best kind of friends to have because they never compete for the really neat stuff you want :) ) and found several of the books in a used book store and bought the lot for me, that of course being the only one I already had. I have occasionally found copies of the others in used bookstores and library discard sales, but never bought them. OTOH I rarely discard a book once I have it, even if it is a duplicate (my house would fall down without the support). Unless I REALLY hate it, which is rare. I remember trying to answer this somewhere as well. >Do we know, through any source, how old Jade is supposed to be (I seem to >recall that AM is/was 15)? My guess is 14. AM herself is now 16.5, but her latest role (Penelope Townes in The Genii Down under) is still as a 14 year old, explicitly stated as such. Off hand I can't remember Nigel Robinson inventing an age for her either, but it may be there. A bit of trivia - AM has the same agent as Adam Pierce, and they appear on the same page of the Spotlight casting directory. AP looks a good bit older now, as you might expect. I just looked at an almanac - very small map, not a lot of detail. Tapahini sounds vaguely Polynesian - unless someone knows more than I do (which wouldn't be hard, since I've never seen the new TP at all) we could assume it is there, which would put it just the other side (west, that is) of the International Date Line. Which, if I am interpreting the almanac correctly, would make it 11 or 12 hours ahead of England. Of course, the time zones aren't straight - they jog back and forth a bit, and Polynesia could be in one of the jogs, so I recommend you get a decent atlas and check it. You'd never know I have a degree in geography, would you? On Tue, 27 Feb 1996, W. Loraine Kelley wrote: > Does anyone have any guesses about what time zone the island would be > in.
