Her books are so... mundane. Predictable. I rather liked the Diana Tregarde books, although I don't like Lackey's other books (gave up after stodging through a bardic trilogy). I think what I like is magic/psi in the real world, rather than some fantasy kingdom (which, dont' get me wrong, I also like from some authors). For the same reason I enjoy Charles DeLint's urban fantasies, and Tanya Huff's vampire stories (Blood trail, Blood Price, etc.) and shows like Forever Knight. And Emma Bull, and Zenna Henderson (rereading her now :) ), and Diane Duane's "So you want to be a Wizard" and its sequels, and darned near anything by Diana Wynne Jones. Peter Dickinson's "Changes" trilogy, which is sort of near future, and post- a very mild (relatively speaking) apocalypse, but fills the same niche for me. It is also one of the reasons I like the TP. I like to feel that there could be psi/magic around. Does anyone know if the R. > Boswell concerned is the Ruth Boswell who worked on the Tomorrow People. Yes. The "J." is her husband James. This was developed while she was head of the ATV script unit at Borehamwood. The odd thing was that they received no creation credit on the programme itself, although Ruth got one for being Script Editor. The book only covers the first 12 episodes ("the Wrong End of Time" and "The Time of the Ice Box"); a further 7 were written by Bruce Stewart, and 7 by Victor Pemberton ("The Year of the Burn-Up" and "The Day of the Clone"). The videos of the whole series have recently been deleted, and I have seen some on offer for half price. > (Sorry for a slightly off-topic post). Let me improve the connection. Ruth Boswell sat on the committee which co-ordinated ITV children's programming representing ATV, where the Thames representative was Lewis Rudd. She told him that she was looking to move to being a producer, and Timeslip was the main reason he suggested she take on The Tomorrow People. [One other was her 1972 adaptation of Catherine Storr's 'Marianne Dreams' as 'Escape Into Night']. In the U.S. actors don't seem to make those transitions. I find it adds immensely to the pleasure of watching. I can't count the number of times I've seen teeny cameos from people (eg. First of all with regards to Mike's lack of trust of John and Liz. Remember that both of them fulfill parental roles in his mind. Mike is a teenager, and hence shares the adolesent prospensity to rebel against parents. This is compounded by the fact that both John and Liz are of a different 'class' to Mike, in their actions, even if not in fact. Both Liz and John are educated, and well spoken. Mike comes from a housing estate, and has the typical working class mentality. To many of that upbringing there is a perception of 'I grew up in the school of life, and other forms of education mean nothing.' Mike may quite easily think that he knows better than Liz and John, simply because he has what he sees as better street knowledge. Also, again consider Mikes relationship to Liz and John. How would you feel if your two major role models were perfect, and never made mistakes? I'd suggest inadequate and useless. You'd also want to prove that you were as good as them. This could not be done, but doing what they would do, but rather by coming up with your own different solution, and getting it right. Consider two cases: 1) The first is in One Law. Mike comes up with his own way of dealing with Lord Dunning, which suceeds. It is totally at odds with what Liz and Hohn would have done. 2) In The Dirtiest Game, Mike attempts to do the same thing. He comes up with his own plan to save Pavla. It fails where the others plans would have suceeded. But in essence, was Mike's plan a bad one? I don't think so. It failed because of his naivete, not because of a flaw in the basic plan. Most 'Mike-haters' think he improved in later seasons (I certainly do). Remember that by then he had Hsui Tai and Andrew around. The onus was no longer on him to be a mere follower. There were people he could lead. He had added maturity and responsibilty. Second of all with regards to the statement: "I'd be happy if I was a Tomorrow Person, and wouldn't be trying to be a normal teenager." That's fine. But there are many valid reasons for craving normality. First of all consider the cons of being a TP. 1) Risks to yourself. Consider Mike's breakout. He was immediately in the clutches of people who just wanted to use his powers for their own nefarious purposes. His family was kidnapped. 2) Responsibility. The TP are Galactic Ambassadors. Mike is still a child, and is expected to 5take on all the responsibilities of helping to represent Earth! 3) Loss of normality. Consider The Dirtiest Business. Mike is in love with Pavla, or at the very least has a real crush on her. Because of what she is, she dies. That's likely to colour your perceptions about the good things in being a TP. These are just a few cases which specifically relate to being a TP. Now consider just the mundane considerations of being a teenager. When you are a child, and an adolescent it is very important to fit in (psychologically speaking). No child likes to stand out in the crowd, unless it is in a sense that will make them popular. As a real world equivalent consider the problems of highly intellectually gifted children. Over 80% of these children experience moderate to severe psycholigcal problems requiring counselling. Over 68% have such major problems they consider suicide and nearly 60% attempt it. 90% of gifted teens between 13 and 16 would prefer not to have their supposed 'gifts'. (CHIP Foundation figures). These do not even come close to the powers of the TP in their effects. A TP is likely to be even more alienated from their peers, and the peer group is very important to any adolescent. Evidence of this occurs in Hitler's Last Secret, where Mile attempts to dress in Nazi regalia. Certainly there is a genetic basis to his actions, but I think that his initial fascination was caused by his desire to fit in. To me, Mikes reaction is quite good and quite realistic (although, not by any means the only one possible). One criticism of the original series (I haven't seen the new yet) that I have, is that the TP are too perfect at times. The show hardly ever considered what a frightening experience it was for the TP, how much they had to give up. When you consider the age of the younger TP (say Kenny, Tyso, Stephen, and Andrew), a more natural reaction to danger would be to escape it, not face it. At the age of ten to fourteen, a child is old enough to fully understand the concept of death and fear it, and still too young to be able to accept the need to face its risk at times, except in very unusual circumstances ie, a younger sibling is in danger. (This is naturally a gross generalisation, there are cases where children of this age have commited incredibly heroic acts.) The TP may well be different, but I don't feel that the few flaws that are shown (Mike's rebelliousness, Stephens incessant whining) just tend to imrpove the show, in showing that the TP are still human. Yours Without Wax, |'Dead clever of him,' said Wobbler. The cynic in me says that the TP format almost demands someone to be stupid or impetuous somewhere along the line, otherwise everything would be resolved before the credits of part 1, unless their powers throw a wobbly on them. This usually comes through someone's inexperience without indoctrination in John's/TPs ways (which as pointed out by Chris were not always that imaginative). Mike visibly 'grows up' during the series in the same way that Stephen did. Mandi was gracious enough to create a TP web ring, but I noticed tonight there were only three sites in it! When my modest site is added, there will be four. If you have a TP page, add it to the ring! (Be patient though, the ring's server does seem to be slow these last several days! :( ) Oh... my modest efforts at photography and showing my visits to some of the TP sights is at http://people.delphi.com/pannellj/tpsights.htm.
