I get mail forwarded to me from a few sources. Lately I have not been posting them on the list. Some people most likely get multiple copies of the mail, while some get none. If there is interest in my forwarding them please let me know. Thanks, Cynthia -- "What does that mean?" "It means the Matrix cannot tell you who you are." Since it's the darkened limb of the Moon that will be doing the occulting, Venus's gradual disappearance could be especially fun to watch. There are a couple of problems: The occultation occurs when Venus is only 6 degrees above the horizon. That's probably too low for the Salt Lake Valley and may even be too low for SPOC which means observers in this area may need to travel west on I-80 to the base of the Cedar Mountains. The other is the smoke currently masking the western sky. If you'd care to join our august bunch on our trek to the occultation, please meet at SPOC at 7:30 pm. We'll decide then whether to try and observe from there or pack up and head for the Salt Flats. Cheers! I have created a program that simulates the actual mission: you input a mid-course correction, and the software generates the optimum trajectory. All the data is output - times, coordinates, and velocities to 1/10th of a centimeter accuracy. I am a graduate student at the Univ. of Texas at Austin and this is my research topic. There is a magazine style article describing the program, plus a technical paper that shows how and why it works. I also have several chapters on the basic orbital mechanics of the mission to Mars on the site. Everything is free. The url is http://get-me.to/mars I hope you have a chance to visit.
