Sure, you're right concerning the fact that we schould pay respect to the originals, but please, don't let us stick to that. Thank God that some people rethink the originals, each with their own ways of doing this: Zorn did great stuff with Ennio Morricone with real instruments, and Laswell rethinks with turntables and effectprocessors. I use the word rethink, because I don't think that Laswell (or Zorn, or Ribot, or Chadbourne, or...) wants to copy the original.... because you can't copy Miles. Laswell just takes the original parts to reconstruct a whole new thing, just like Zorn re-arranged the original Morricone tunes to reconstruct a whole new world of sound. Perhaps you just don't like Laswells' way of doing things, no problem with that, but you can't ignore the fact that at least he tries to do something interesting with -the originals-. So, if you don't like what Laswell is doing, well, you can allways put on another disc, can't you? Cheers, Tom Subject: Dave Douglas, free musicians Question: Hi Pat, I was wondering what you think of Dave Douglas? To me, he seems to be a good example of a young-ish musician who, like yourself, puts his own mark in a number of different areas. And could you comment on the following: in a couple of recent issues of Downbeat, Wynton Marsalis listed a bunch of trumpet players he liked, and Douglas didn't make the cut. On the other side of the coin, I read that Derek Bailey was impressed by your ability to play so freely - since he was so used to "free" players who in fact are very limited by their own narrow conceptions (as you predicted for the reception of the SignOf4 - which i loved, especially in person). Do you see any hope for more openness and expansiveness in music among at least some young musicians these days? Feel free to name names. Thanks! Pat's Answer: i agree that dave is an example of a true modern musician - he is someone who is interested in expanding his voice as an improvisor through the study of the work of previous masters (wayne shorter), but is committed to finding his own thing beyond that. he seems to really energetic and active, with what seems like 4 or 5 bands going on at all times. mainly, i just enjoy hearing him - he is one of those guys that you can just turn yourself over to, know he is going to sound good and going to play some hip stuff with a good sound and good time. i have heard him in several different settings and have always enjoyed it. as far as "expansive" musicians go, there are a lot of them. for example; brian blade, kurt rosenwinkle, joey baron, seamus blake, brad meldahl, victor lewis, christian mcbride, joshua redman, kenny garrett, mike brecker, branford marsalis, and many many others. - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 08:18:34 -0700 From: "Patrice L. My name is Cameron, I'm 16 and I live in South Australia I realise it's a little late in relation to the topic, but it's here anyway. Firstly I read on this list that Zorn practiced saxophone for 8 hours a day and people were unsure about that. Well, I recently was at a site www.dtmgallery.com which I got linked to through this list and I was going through this cartoon called "Masada by Harvey Pekar". In that, Zorn told this guy he practiced for 8 hours a day for 10 years. I think it was about frame 5 so you can go there and check it. The other thing is I found a biography on Zorn in a jazz book at school. However, I'll send that in another message so that this one isn't so huge..... - ------------------------------------------------------------ Do you hate clowns?
