The Schlippenbach Trio has another disc called 'Elf Bagatellen' which is also good but with much shorter tracks than 'Physics'. Aside from that, Evan Parker's 2-CD '50th Birthday Concert' on Leo - split with Parker/Guy/Lytton trio - is the only other recording of this group on CD but there's a bunch of out-of-print vinyl. Here's their discography I lifted from the European Free Improvisors Page: 1972, Pakistani pomade, FMP 110. 1974/75, Three nails left, FMP 0210. Quartet with Peter Kowald. 1977, The hidden peak, FMP 0410. Quartet with Peter Kowald. 1981 Detto fra di noi, Po Torch PTR/JWD 10&11. 1981, Das hohe lied, Po Torch PTR/JWD 16&17. Quartet with Alan Silva. 1982, Anticlockwise, FMP 1020. Quartet with Alan Silva. 1983, Option Abdullah, Jazzgalerie Nicklesdorf. Track on compilation CD. 1990, Elf bagatellen, FMP CD 27. 1991, Physics, FMP CD 50. 1994, 50th birthday concert, Leo CD LR 212/213. It's worth checking out, if you have the patience, for the vinyl section in the back. Some of the stuff is pricey, but a couple of years back I found the Bley/Burton 'Genuine Tong Funeral' (for which I'd vainly searched for many years) for about $20. > > On another RS Jackson related note, I heard a rumor that some of the titles > from the old "About Time" label will be released on cd soon, can anyone > confirm?? I've heard this rumor also; hopefully true. They only released 8 or 10 records, right? As near as I can recall, nearly EVERY one of them is excellent, including one of the better Breuker Kollektief dates. Perhaps the advent of the CD saw them weary of recording: there's no shortage of Parker-Guy-Lytton discs, though I ain't bothered by that. I will EMPHATICALLY second the 50th BIRTHDAY CONCERT suggestion---it is simply one of my personal favorite recordings of improvised music. That may not mean much, but FWIW apparently the Penguin Guide gents agree. And so do several friends of mine new and not fan-ish about freeprov. If you have not heard NARI Sarah Perkins the affiant herein have personal knowledge of the following facts. It was Christmas time my family, Emily included, had gathered in Baton Rouge to visit my Aunt Liz. She is my mother's sister. We were supposed to meet Rocky there between 5:30 to 6:30. He was going to take us to visit his family in Lafayette. When he arrived he had obviously been drinking. I was about fourteen at the time and Emily was six. He was not upon first arrival drunk, only partially intoxicated. But for whatever reason Rocky was very irate. I was in the kitchen when he knocked. My aunt opened the door. He swaggered in and asked if we were ready to go. My mother told him Emily was in the back playing with her cousin. Rocky then said rudely that my mother should go get her. She complied. My Aunt Liz offered him some wine in an obvious attempt to be nice. He accepted. My mother came back with Emily as my Aunt Liz was giving him the wine. My mother said that she didn't that think Rocky should be drinking if he was planning on driving. He said something along the line of 'oh really' and downed his entire glass of wine right there. My mother said that wasn't amusing and requested he stop. Rocky ignored her. Then he picked up her glass of wine and drank it in two gulps. I was extremely nervous at this time. I did not wish to go with Rocky. However I was afraid to let Emily go by herself, especially now that it seemed Rocky was in one of his moods. I promised my mother I would call her when we arrived and I would not ride back with Rocky if he kept drinking. Then we left for Lafayette with Rocky. About two blocks later Rocky stopped the car. He explained that we did not have enough seat belts for everyone in his truck so Jon and I would share a buckle and Emily would go without one. He said that he would be able to catch her head before she would hit the gearshift in case of accident. He even had her lean forward to estimate where her head would land. I did not mention that the car was in park so the placement of the gearshift was irrelevant even if he could conceivably reach out his hand and catch her. Emily looked rather nervous but wisely said nothing. If you have not heard the NATIVES AND ALIENS recording by ParkerGuyLytton plus Marilyn Crispell, it's great and IMHO operates out of the same bag: in other words, a fan of PHYSICS would like it a least as much. Just anotha 2cents. - ---s ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 20:03:44 -0500 From: Mike Baktin Subject: Re: Schlippenbach Trio Hi there, For those of you in NYC, Lovens and Schlippenbach will be appearing at Carnegie sometime around April/May. Now that I have, I'm wondering what Patrice meant when he said: >For a John Butcher (to name somebody a little bit younger), how many second >knives, predictable performances (waiting for the elusive "magic moment"), >hackeneyed and tedious extended techniques? First of all, I'd heretofore managed to make it to the ripe old age of 24 without hearing any references to "second knives." What does this term mean? Secondly, is this a slam against Butcher or are you just using him as an example of someone who has to deal with this situation? I just got _Concert Moves_ today, and was favorably impressed by use of "hackneyed and tedious extended techniques," as well as the new (to me) things he brings to the music. I liked his his breathy, fluttery, almost Bill Dixon-ish approach. I don't hear much in the way of Evan Parker-like sounds, though my exposure to Parker is limited to about five albums (at what point can you claim to have an understanding of a musician's style?). Thirdly, I think freely improvised music of both the jazz type and the non- idiomatic sort has been plagued by predictable performances and tedious extended techniques (and probably second knives, too) since shortly after its "invention." When does a technique become tedious, and how predictable is predictable? I'm sure a good portion of the early free improv concerts were incoherent rubbish, full of obvious gestures and boring squalls, perhaps saved only by the novelty of it all. Minus the novelty, it seems like the main difference today is that more of the stuff is recorded and released, upping the chances that you'll get garbage coming out of your speakers. There's a sense in which free improv can't stagnate, because it was stagnant from the beginning--that is, the idea of instrumentalists "conversing" with each other without preconceived notions of how the music should "go" was the basis then and still is now. What else can you do with this music? In that sense, this music is rigid as all hell--at least in composed music you can throw in some improv for kicks, but if you put a composed section into a free improv, it's not free improv anymore. These aren't necessarily well thought out ideas. To throw a little more fuel on the fire, here's something from December's Cadence I'm surprised people didn't quote during the original conversation: Matthew Shipp: "How can I put this...What you said before, that there is a school of people that would look at myself and say, "You're just doing the avant-garde music of the sixties"--they tend to like White players, and they would say that this group of whites are doing something new, and you guys aren't. That type of ideology does exist. I think it's complete bullshit, myself." He doesn't really explain why he thinks it's bullshit, as far as I can tell. I don't know what I think. Hmm...I'll stop there. - -- Charles - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 23:15:40 EST From: JonAbbey2@aol.com Subject: Re: Schlippenbach Trio? I seem to post here a few times a year about the amazing work that Mr. Parker is doing, and I remember having included Most Materiall in one of those. if there are people out there passing up discs because they'll just be "more Evan Parker", it's their loss. I think he's the most important saxophonist since Coltrane, and he continues to put out truckloads of great and unique records, for which I can only be thankful. Can't believe I didn't mention since I'm there about every week, lately keeping a vigil out for the two Schubert lieder cycles recordings by Schreier and Schiff I'm still seeking, "Die Schoene Mullerin" and "Schwanengesang" - anyone have copies they want to part with? Anyway, Academy has long been known as THE place for buying used classical as it's the store at which all the critics offload their promos. Over the last few years their pop and jazz selections have become equally formidable, and in particular, as Jeff mentioned, someone's offloaded some serious improv stuff there over the last year. Vinyl selection is also fabulous and every now and then you'll come across a screamin' deal, either by virtue of relative rarity, comparative high price if purchased new, or simply a rpice you can't believe. Last purchase at Academy: John Tilbury's Skempton recital, "Now Now Cornelius" for $3.99. 12 W. 18th St., BTW, for those marking the trails I've described on a subway map, is midway between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Actually, based on a post I got from Joseph Zitt, I'm at work on slightly expanding my record store list to include the best stores that specialize in stuff not specifically limited to new music (for instance, the best place to buy Latin music in the city is in a store currently located in the Times Square subway station, but will soon have to move due to subway rennovation). Academy is the type of store I would include on this list. When I finish it I'll post it to the list for reference and certainly debate/ammendment. Maybe we could find people in other major cities here and abroad to create similar users guides? I'd love to have such a shopping guide to, say, London or Toronto at hand when heading into a new town.
