Great value. The music is worth full retail, altho I probably wouldn't have ventured into it unheard except for the discount. A couple of listens all the way through (great sound both studio and live), and Mark Dresser is really blowin my mind. Technique is mind-boggling, allowing a musical msg I've never heard anything like. Enjoying those bass/ contrabass clarinet duos too.... This could well hurt my wallet some more.... There's so much Dresser to listen to on those four discs, but greedy materialistic fetishist collector that I am (tho not as bad as some of you -- I don't know whether to thank you for helping me feel relatively normal or curse you for the freer license to acquire Acquire ACQUIRE) I'm interested in more Dresser. Any recommendations there? I'm sorta sorry I have't followed Dresser's career more closely. We're both from the San Diego area and I remember him already pretty unique and impressive back then (late 70s/early 80s) as he helped create, briefly, a good little avant improvising scene. I remember him bringing Bobby Bradford down from LA and playing with him, I remember a coffee house gig with Diamanda Galas, who was also still in the area at the time. And probably something with saxman Daniel Jackson, who continues to blow in San Diego -- one of those overlooked gems who never sought the big time (I think Arthur Blythe talks about Jackson in the last copy of Cadence). I still have a postcard Dresser wrote me in thanks after a review or interview in the San Diego State Univ newspaper -- nice guy, very focused on what he wanted to do, and obviously very disciplined about learning what could be done with the bass. Oh now I also remember him holding down the bass chair at a Sunday jam session run by Anthony Ortega -- specifically remember him terrifyingly tearing it up on a solo to Caravan. Lived in a little cottage near the cliffs overlooking the ocean in Del Mar.... n.p. Rabih Abou-Kahlil -- Odd Times (finally got around to picking this one up and amazingly, the oud-harmonica-tuba-drums things works! The harp player does some amazing things to follow the texture and nuance and non-equal tempered playing of Abou-Kahlil. Really the instrumentation isn't so odd -- harp takes the place of the alto sax he used a lot before this, tuba takes the place of bass. But the harp also brings occasional blues connotations -- Lebanese blues!) - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 21:35:02 -0500 (EST) From: William York Subject: Zorn at the Philharmonic Hi, if anyone got or gets to see Zorn's Orchestra Vatiations at the New York Philharmonic, could you please post a brief review? Hey There: I received today's Zorn list with anticipation, having seen the Masada for the first time last night at the Tonic. I'm surprised this edition of Zorn list isn't packed with information and reviews. But anyway...I'm going to tell you my impressions of these amazing musicians. The Tonic club, for those who don't know is rather intimate, and although it was PACKED, we managed to snipe some seats right in front of Joey Baron, which was absolutely amazing. This guy is on another planet, and just seeing him play drums is an experience...not to mention what you hear. He has the most organic sound, and Greg Cohen and him locked up on a lot of interesting ideas. At the same time, Zorn and Dave Douglas were absolutely flying. A lot of notes, and each one so well placed. I can't comment on how the ensemble compared to past Masada showings, but I DO know that it was very very intense, and they were having as much fun as we were. As for specific tunes, all those Masada song titles tend to run together to me. I know one song's title (Tahah) and they gave a damn spirited rendition of that tune to close the night. The second set in particular was intense, and about halfway through the set, the intensity level jumped a notch, and I found myself with my mind bent in several different directions. Thanks guys...you really kicked my ass. I'm sorry there isn't more to say, but with all of Zorn's work, the music spoke solely for itself. If anyone else who has seen more Masada would like to chip in thier $.02 I'd love to hear other's opinions. For those who missed it...next time... I caught him a couple of weeks ago (Merkin Hall, NYC) in a performance of several pieces of his of a somewhat classical bent and was pretty impressed. His ensemble, in various configurations, included Mary Rowell (violin), Friedlander, Denman Maroney, Marcus Rojas and Chris Speed. His writing and, to a great extent, the group's improvising, displayed a refreshing, tart, romantic streak, becoming quite moving in works like one dedicated to the passengers of Flight 800. Should this group record, I'd strongly suggest checking it out. Dresser also performed a very strong solo piece, demonstrating his rich facility with the bow. > n.p. Keep an eye out for online coupons for MusicBlvd., CDNow, etc. (When Amazon.com first started its online music section their DIW discs were about $13, but not anymore.) Unfortunately you won't be seeing Masada discs in the used bins yet (not until that box set is released, heh heh). Also http://www.everycd.com list their Masada CDs from $13.97 - $16.48 (and Naked City CDs for $15.82!), which is the cheapest I've seen them online without coupons. Be warned, however: ever since everycd.com put out those full-page ads in newspapers nationwide, their pages have been loading up incredibly slowly, which has prevented me from actually ordering (you also have to pay a membership fee). Not a paid shill for any of these online stores, usual disclaimers, etc., etc. Later, Ben http://www.bigfoot.com/~bvergara/ ICQ# 12832406 - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 12:53:02 -0500 From: Circle9 Subject: Re: E. Chadbourne CVC is a collaboration of Eugene and the art-folk-rolk group Camper van Beethoven. It' okay- just them goofing around, playing covers (Floyd and Zappa feature prominently). I wouldn't recommend it as an introduction, as it feels very much like a throw-away album. Though for $4.99, the price is hard to beat. Starting out on EC, I'd recommend "There'll Be No Tears Tonight" (a/k/a "LSD C&W")- his wacky arrangements of old Country & Western classics (which happens to feature Zorn on sax). "Country Protest" is pretty strong as well IMO- covers and originals, lots of experimental noodling on that one. No idea as to the current in-print status on either... -S.
