But now the question has been cast more widely. =-->Waxman wonders: Others artists may have been rapists, murders, drunks, had very bad manners or any done a variety of other things of which we may not personally aprove. But can we allow this to affect our appreciation (or not) of their art? tough one. really. as an opinionated fella on any number of topics -- social, political and otherwise -- i've grappled with not just disagreeing with but feeling heavily disappointed by the views of creators whose art i like. the crux for me was close to 10 years ago, when i read mingus' autobiography "beneath the underdog" and had to fess up that the guy was pretty piggish. at first, i wanted to sell all my mingus records (i was younger then). i decided to keep them, but still didn't listen to them. finally, i realized that my mingus boycott was not effecting the world, and i was only depriving myself of music that i did, and still do, love. (for the record, the mingus bio is pretty sexist, includes his pimpin and whorin, but not really worse than that). now the balance i *try* to maintain is that if a performer shares ideals with me, whether or not they are reflected in the work, that only adds to my exhileration. politics is a big part of why i love eugene chadbourne's work, even his instrumental stuff. if a song with lyrics is blatantly objectionable, i am very unlikely to listen to it again. but if there are views held by an artist but not demonstrated in the work, i do my best to set it aside. like i said, i still listen to mingus. i can't, however, say the same about gayle, though i wish i could. zorn's personal politics have never come into question in my mind because, while i don't necessarily assume that he and i would agree on israel, animal research or the human genome project, nothing about his work (including art) has ever seemed to require justification to me (the way, i don't know, something like the robot rape painting on that guns n roses record would)(and i do like g'n'r, but wouldn't care to hang out with them). he's just never struck me as advocating the things depicted in the historical or artistic images he chooses to use. one thing that i think is important is they often are pieces that were not created for the work, and we know what an appetite he has for all kinds of art. like myself, he seems willing to face unpleasant images. but i hope nobody would assume me a gangster because i enjoy a scorcese flick. =-->Meanwhile, IOUaLive1 wonders: BTW--- where did they come up with this name? I think Jamaaladeen is the only Philadelphian, and he aint all that young. I thought Punk Funk Harmodelic fit them pretty well. The sax player that sat in with them was named Danny Zamiro, he looked all of about 20 years old, and damn he can play!! my guess is this is danny zamir (no 'o'), who leads the striking trio satleh (formerly the nfs trio and the not for sale trio), and who i've pumped up here before. satleh will be playing mondays at the tap bar (knit, no cover) next month, and are supposed to be doing a tzadik cd with the masada string trio this year. kg np: zohar keter (again) - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 21:31:03 -0500 From: "Jim Kan" Subject: urgh So it's 9pm, and I'm sitting here at work in the computer geek suburbs of Boston trying to figure out why my code doesn't run on one machine when it ran on the other one. I only found out about the concert an hour beforehand so unfortunately I couldn't pass on information. The concert was sold out (well attended by the Boston press, which doesn't normally get to cover music of this sort), but by purchasing CDs from some of the students at the boston museum school, i got them to trade me one of their tickets that they couldn't use. The concert featured single sets by each of Mori, Marclay, and Sharp with a joint improvisation after intermission. I felt that the solo works were more solid than the trio. I didn't know Mori's work before and was totally impressed by the intensity of her playing (multiple drum machines) -- maybe it was her subdued participation in the second half that made it flatter for me. I'm guessing coming from the classical side of things that I don't see as many innovative guitar players as I should, so seeing the glidepad attached to Sharp's instrument was a great surprise for me. going to see if i can put one next to the thumb rest of my bass clarinet. The concert was part of a pretty innovative showcase of music as installation art going on this week at the museum school at the fenway. Anyone on the list heard his "spectral" music? Brian Olewnick>> Hi Brian, Funny you should ask. I just got back from Merkin and the Grisey tribute. Basically, the idea of spectral music has to do with the use of orchestral instruments playing overtones and processes usually done through electronics. I have to write a full article/review in it/him for LaFolia.com, but the brief version is that the music has to do with partials and overtones, and manipulating parts of the partials... I'm not as musicologically adept as I'd like to be, plus I'm extremely tired. Haven't read the NYTimes in years; I'm allergic to the newprint ink, no joke. Excellent playing by the group. I dont know if "diva" is the word I would use. He wasnt even on the bill, he seemed to be just sitting in, like he does every where else. I thought his "singing" at that gig was pretty awful.
