"working" groups has been mentioned: his trio with trombonist Ray Anderson and guitarist Christy Doran. I know they have at least two records on HatArt, and I recommend both highly, even---especially---for non-free-improv fans, and those who prefer to avoid the schtick. Anderson's and Bennink's respective senses of humor blend beautifully, and Doran's at times fragile, at times ridiculously overdriven electric guitar, is one of the band's most unique features. I prefer CHEER UP a shade or two to AZURETY. Unique, noticeably different, funky and wild. And the FMP double-platter LIVE IN BERLIN 1971 (?) with Brotzmann, Mangelsdorff, and van Hove, is a scary, beautiful thing. Bennink creates a dark cloud of garbage cans with what sounds like six arms and four feet: perhaps there is a "ghost drummer". He sccreams and plays what sounds like homemade instruments, guffaws, snorts, and wails, and lays down a shimmering kalima (mbira?) bed at times. This is a great record, methinks. If THREE POINTS compares, I'm dieting next week as well. Ha! - -----s, who is bored silly by Clusone Trio, except maybe SOFT LIGHTS... So I've got a few too many things I've my eye on for my own good; I thought I'd let those of you who know better set me on some tracks: First of all, what are some essential (in print/not terribly difficult to find) Braxton cds? And how is his Parker Project release on Hat? Second, do any of you have opinions on Teodoro Anzellotti's "Push Pull" cd on Hat[now]Art? I've been enthralled by accordions/etc. and unusually used banjos lately, so if there's anything one of you may wish to speak for in lieu of that... And speaking of, what is the name of the artist who recorded the CD of Erik Satie tunes for solo accordion? How is it? Finally, I've been listening to a lot of Robert Johnson lately, but I find that placing aside a few exceptions, I don't really get into much more modern blues. I was wondering if there was perhaps any artists doing something original with the format/stretching it? Blues for someone who loves Tom Waits and Bernhard Gunter? Thanks for any suggestions. Take care, Andy - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 10:06:25 GMT+0100 From: "Jeroen de Boer" Subject: Re: Han Bennink > wow, I couldn't disagree more. maybe you're a bit jaded from seeing him too > many times, Ken, since he does tend to repeat some of the same bits in > different performances, but I think he's incredibly fun to watch live, and a > lot of the time, he's hilarious. Last summer The ICP-Orchestra performed at the JazzBicycleTour in a small church in a village near Groningen, The Netherlands. The place was totally packed and the ICP performance was great. In between two songs Bennink walked from the stage (the altar), down the gangway to the entrance hall, where he got a drink. While manouvering through the crowded gangway though, a little mentally handicapped boy (I think he was about 7 years old) pulled one of Bennink's trouser legs. They obviously knew each other, I think because of the fact Bennink has a mentally handicapped daughter. They hugged and Bennink gave the boy his solo-cd, for which he took all the time he needed to write something down on it for the boy. At the time the ICP was already playing, but Bennink didn't seem to care at all. All he and the boy did was talk and giving high fives to each other. When Bennink was on stage again the audience couldn't do else as watch the boy go wild as Bennink did one of his tricks. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful... AMBERCHAI/AVENAIM: THE ALTER REIBE'S NIGUN This is a very strange recording. I'd like to know more about these two of anyone knows anything (for example, what is phlegm? - the band, I mean). It's very good, full of jewish tradition where you least expect it, like the noisy guitars in the first track. THE SELFHATERS: THE ABYSMAL RICHNESS... I'm still growing in on this one. I quite like it, but didn't "fell in love" imediatly. It's quite paranoic, actually... JOHN ZORN: TABOO AND EXILE This one blew me off. Probably repetitive for some of you, but I still loved it. Has some tracks with tribal feel, like the Cyro Baptista/Joey Baron duo, has some tracks out of Masada (I think) and has these brutal songs with a new set that resembles Painkiller (with Lombardo, Laswell, Frith and sometimes Zorn and Ribot). Great collection of songs, but I think Zorn could have gone further with the theme... SONIC YOUTH: SYR4 This is a nice recording showing SY's newest tendency in recording. This time they're nailing piano keys. Has a funny little track with Coco Gordon Moore "singing" a Yoko Ono piece... Most SY fansprobably hate it, while avant gard/experimental types will find it interesting. MASADA: HET What can I say about this? It's Masada. Always great, in my humble opinion... Also, this is probably old news, but since I've been off the list for a while: MR. BUNGLE: CALIFORNIA Here in Portugal alot of people called it the album of the year, and there was a great fuss about it, though most people thought it was Mike Patton's project AFTER Faith No More. I think alot of FNM fans were responsible for the album's success around here (we have a solid FNM fan base)... I also got some more things that are probably off topic, like stuff from The Flamin Lips, Stereolab, Cat Power, Kiss My Jazz and also the new Primal Scream, which made me wonder if we needed yet another big beat/techno/hardcore thingie, but then again, what the hell, if it sounds nice, why not hear it? There is a place on the net that I can order more, but what are the opinions on this album and their others? Well, "Doc's Place..." is quite good and wild. Basically it's a "raw" kind of album (but then again, all KMJ albums are). It's the noisiest of them all, but always with that cheesy, sleasy kind of jazz tunes attached to it. Then there's "In the Lost Souls Convention" which is, IMHO, the best. More instrumental and less focused on the lyrics (I don't think Rudy Trouvé is very good at writing lyrics in english). It has this amazing song called Wild Orchid that blows me away everytime I hear it (it's a sort of musical stand-up comedy show) And finally, there's "In the Service Station" which also includes the ghost album "In a Ghost Truck". No, really, there is a hidden ep on this CD, if you press the search button of your CD player back to 24 minutes in the first track. This album is alot more lo-fi than any of the previous and alot more country too. It was a surprise to me to see they had turned into country both musically and thematically. It's quite good also. I'd say go for the three of them, but start chronologically. If you're only the curious listener, get "In the Lost Souls Convention".
