Last Saturday the Arkestra did an evening at the Knit to earn some of the resources necessary to rebuild the House of Ra. The following is the announcement from the Concerts Area of my Saturn Web that gives the particulars for the event, as well as the basic facts about the fire: ============================================== The Arkestra @ The Knit Elson Nascimento do Santos announced that the Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen will appear at The Knitting Factory 74 Leonard Street New York City (5 blocks below Canal between Broadway & Church) on Saturday March 11, 2000. This event will be a benefit concert to raise some of the funds needed to fix the Arkestra house in Philadelphia that was damaged by a fire on January 16, 2000. Those who were expressing interest in supporting the Arkestra in defraying the large costs of fire damage repairs at the historic Arkestra house are encouraged to attend on March 11. Sun Ra Arkestra t-shirts and A Song For The Sun Arkestra CDs will also be sold at the event to help raise funds to fix the house. For additional information from the Knitting Factory, visit their website or call 212-219-3006. ============================================== Although the concert has passed, anyone wishing to buy a copy of the CD or enquire about the very nice tee-shirts might want to contact them. These are proud men who are trying to rebuild and get back to the vital work of keeping the Arkestra in existence; please respect their dignity. Hope this helps. I might not have listened to the right Harry Partch because the comparison never came to me. I am a huge fan of LES NOCES and consider that this too often overlooked piece is one of the masterpieces of this century. I dream sometimes that people would give up on CARMINA BURANA and instead listen to LES NOCES... (or at least stop making statements about CARMINA BURANA until they have listened to LES NOCES). 'refusal fossil' is the only ruins i have, and i think it is great. the lo-fi crap sound only enhances the experience for me. it does have a high prog-rock component (i think one of the later tunes is a prog-rock medley of some sort), though (which is no problem to my ears). i've heard two live bootlegs from 98 and 99, and they did not strike me as radically different from refusal fossil...which makes me curious about the other reccommendations being given on the list. whatever the case, i really enjoy refusal fossil. cheers, whit np - charles mingus, mingus mingus mingus mingus mingus - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 12:05:30 -0600 (CST) From: Whit Schonbein Subject: Re: Zorn List Digest V2 #892 On Thu, 16 Mar 2000, Zorn List Digest wrote: > Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 17:51:26 -0700 > From: "Tom Johnson" > Subject: Re: Joey Baron - Down Home > If you like what you heard, you won't be disappointed. For the record, Down Home has Frisell, Ron Carter, Joey Baron, and Arthur Blythe on Sax; it is very straightforward, as tom notes. Raised Pleasure Dot i *think* is by Baron's earlier group, Barondown, with Steve Swell on trombone and Ellery Eskelin on sax. Strange instrumentation for a fun trio. I'm not much of a fan of this band, but I know several people who love it. They have two (?) other albums, the names of which I forget. (There may be some other bands, too; I recall an album by Baron called 'crackshot' - maybe this is a Barondown album?) Finally, there's his more recent band consisting of Baron, John Medeski on organ, and Marc Ribot on guitar. There are several bootlegs of this band in action floating around, and this band is by far my favorite Baron-led band. I think they began as an all-improv unit (i heard one tape where they kept jokingly referring to every jam as 'song #1'), but 'real' songs with 'real' names somehow came to be. in that respect, 2L writes: > Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 13:02:08 +0100 > From: 2L > Subject: Re: Joey Baron - Down Home > > And what about his latest solo album, "We'll soon find out"? > Because I saw Joey play at the Banlieues Bleues Festival (near Paris, Fra= > nce) > last week (with Ribot and Medeski) My question is, is the new album with ribot and medeski? and when is it released in the US? cheers, whit - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 13:14:59 -0500 From: Dan Hewins Subject: Joey Baron stuff >Finally, there's his more recent band consisting of Baron, John Medeski on >organ, and Marc Ribot on guitar. I saw this band at the Knitting Factory recently and I also think they're a great band. Also my favorite Baron led band. They definitely had written music to play.
