I have the vinyl and it is indeed called "A Tribute to Cannonball.'' Cannonball was the producer -- that's his only apparent involvement -- which does little to diminish the weirdness and inappropriateness of the title. This is a straight-ahead bop session. Just One of Those Things/Cherokee/I Remember Clifford/ Good Bait/ All the Things You Are and a few lesser-known tunes. Don Byas at the top of his game was incredible -- not sure why he never got more props. Anybody got any ideas? Rich tone, sophisticated harmonically in the bebop meaning of the word, fluid phrasing with rhythmic surprises. I have an old album called Ben Webster/Don Byas -- Two Kings of the Tenor Sax. They don't actually play together except on one song -- Byas' side is mostly live duets ith Slam Stewart. Just ripping. ... AS for the LP with Bud Powell, Byas is in good form although the razor sharpness of earlier years is slightly blunted. Powell seems to stumble onto his share of ideas. On the uptempo stuff, he's blurring the notes on phrases rather than articulating each one. Anybody had a drink around here? You guys got me to pull out another album I hadn't listened to for ages. Many of these piece were written before the opus 1 passacaglia (1908), but at least a few were composed later and just weren't given opus numbers for reasons someone who's read the biography might be able to answer, I can't. These include Im Sommerwind for orchestra; 5 pieces for orchestra (1913); three pieces for string quartet from 1905-6; a piano quintet; a cello sonata, some solo piano pieces, and a lot of songs for voice & piano. This comes to more than 2 hours of music. Most of these pieces have been included on the individual Webern/Boulez discs DGG released prior to the box. (I haven't seen the last disc, but it probably includes the works for piano solo and accompanying other instruments, since the variations, the pieces for cello or violin and piano aren't on the previous DGG CDs.) Each of the DGG CDs I've seen includes at least one piece not on the CBS box. The CD of Webern's songs on DGG by Christiane Oelze, which I assume is the one used in the box set, includes about 20 songs without opus numbers totalling about 40 minutes of music. So even without any surprise new finds, it should be easy for the DGG set to fill out 6 discs. Last month it was reported that BMG Classics - known in America under its imprints RCA Victor Red Seal and RCA Victor - was being gutted in a drastic downsizing that will reduce what was once the third largest classical recording operation in the world to an appendage of BMG's pop division. All overseas recording activity is to be temporarily halted, reissue projects are being put in limbo and scores of employees laid off. .. And RCA is by no means alone in gutting its classical division. Universal (which owns the Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and Philips labels) has cut its artist roster to the bone. The Japanese-owned Sony is devoting more and more attention to crossover and soundtracks. In January, the European giant EMI merged with Warner-AOL in a move that is expected to lay waste to several Warner labels. (There's no indication yet that Teldec, part of the Warner family, will drop the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which it records on a per-project basis.)
